The Forbidden Bite

"I cannot" "You can, and you will, Son. You have no choice" fathers' hostile tongue punishes my eldest brother. "Why! I don't want it. I never did" Mason stands as high as he could to try and overpower our alpha. "Because it is your right, as soon as possible, to take my place as alpha." Mason's eyes clouded black, his body stiffens, and his head shakes multiple times, the shock of this knowledge compresses him. "It is time" "No." "You will do this" Father threatens, placing Josh in the nurse's hands, "I can no longer be alpha, while your mother is on her deathbed." He shouts but doesn't look towards Mother as she painfully hears her family in conflict. Mason's eyes trail to his mother's. Their bond has been stronger than anyone's, for over a hundred years. Mason walks past his father, his father stands there and squashes the tears away, he fears people will see. "Mother." Mason slowly falls to his knees in front of his mother's bed. He places his warm fingers across her cold stiff arm and towards her stale fingers. Tears spring out of his eyes. "Mother?" He repeats, "Can you hear me?" Her small fragile face turns to his and smiles. "Of course, Mason" Her crunching diseased voice startles all of us, her black veins travel up her neck and spread across her face, and I can no longer identify her. "I am sorry," He cries. "I will bring everyone down. I am not ready" He whispers. Mother places her hand slowly on Mason's glossy coffee hair and struggles to bring him forward. "My Baby Boy, my Alpha. You are strong enough to do anything," She pauses to catch her breath. "But, if you wish to not become alpha, then I grant you that wish." Father turns to lock with Mother's eyes, confused and disappointed. "Joanna," Father tenderly disobeys. "I want you to live, the life, you always wanted" She stops and coughs, her echoing chest travels the room. "Joanna?" Father repeats. "I'm okay," She assured her father, "You are young, don't worry about me, I will see you soon." "But mother." He cries. 'I don't want you to go.' "Shhh," she brought her fragile fingers to his hair trying her best to run her fingers through it, and began to hum a song, a lullaby she always sang to him while he slept, every pause she made, she took the biggest inhale, halfway through choking on the air she breathed but didn't stop. Mason stops her from singing with his enchanting voice, he sang, choking on his tears, but sang while caressing her hair for the last time, like she would to him. Their whispers were silenced further for a moment. "Goodbye, Mother." He leaned over the bed and kissed her forehead. "Goodbye, my child." their fingers touched for the very last time, as Mason walked past his father, and bowed to say his goodbyes, father very nearly stopped him, but it was mother's last wish. Mason slowly walks towards me, his lips twitching into a smile, but the pain overrides it. I watch as Father holds Mum in his arms and the nurse walks over and places Josh in Mother's arms. "Mason!" I run down the stone stairs towards the outside world, where the moon shines above us, the trees sway to the rhythm of the wind and the howling of the pack that has multiplied since the attack on my mother. "Brother?" He struggles to turn. "Please don't go." My small voice begs him. "My little brother, I will always write to you." He places his large hand on top of my small head and scuffs my hair. "Please, Mas. Don't leave me" Tears spring out of my eyes. "Brother, I have disobeyed our alpha, our father, and it is treason, I must leave." He looks up towards the house. "Will I see you again?" I grab onto his lower arm as he walks away. "Of course, look after mummy, okay? And be careful when you see your link, it is a very strong bond, almost as strong as blood. Just don't forget who you are brother." He nudges my shoulder and leaves me there. I nod in agreement. "Do you promise to come back?" I shout. "I promise. My blood is your blood. I will find you again, I swear to it, to the old god's brother." Mason takes one last look at the house; he turns towards the moonlight and changes into his dark wolf. Scattering into the forest... "You swore to it, to the old gods" I whisper. "Yes, and I am sorry," He walks over towards his desk and starts to pack. "Sorry isn't good enough" ... "What are you doing?" I panic. "Leaving. Father is here now; I have no choice but to run." "Run?" I growl. "I thought you were here to protect her?" "The King will send another. Father will kill me; all he sees is a disappointment- mothers' eyes in mine." "You will not do this again, not like last time, you will stay." I force him down with my hand. "You are ridiculous, and weak, when something comes along, you cannot handle it, this time you have no choice." My hand pins him down, and his face rages. However, he does not stop. "Then I will keep running!" He tosses me to the side. My fangs reveal; my claws tear the surface of the desk. "You are not listening to me!" I snatch him by the ankles and drag him down. "Father doesn't want you alpha anymore, he wants you to be a warrior. And wherever you run, I will always find you, we are bonded by blood, brother. There is no point in running. Or have you forgotten we are family? My blood is your blood." He no longer struggles. "I saw this coming?" "A war, brother, the prophecy is true." "The war?" He questions, as he stands, and leans against the desk. "So, it is true." "Brother?" "The library is here, the portal is here, I have done research all these years, for the King himself." "The library?" the library? No, "Impossible, that was lost a thousand years ago." "It was never lost; it was just hiding." His shaken voice scatters the entire room. I may have missed him a lot, but he has just made my life a lot harder, once Father finds out about this. My mind travels somewhere else for a moment. "You know you have a hunter in this school. Right under your nose." "I know." "Then why haven't you done anything about it?". "What am I supposed to do? I want peace," he says. "Peace? Do you know what kind of hunter she is brother, she sniffed me out before I could." "I know." His answers are worrying me. "You know, do you? Do you know that her kind of hunter cannot control the urge to not kill? Someone like that shouldn't be anywhere near Violetta!" "I know." He sighs. "If you don't do anything, then I will." Five hours later I had no idea what was about to happen, or what I did, I didn't mean to do it, I couldn't control myself. This was my first, and if Father finds out about what I did, and so close to home, and who he is, I am already dead. I only wanted to warn him, I was not ready for this responsibility. I speak to my brother as if it just happened minutes before this conversation and I am asking for his guidance, for his help, I have never asked for it before, I need it now. In his mucky school, in his classroom, in the life he had built for himself, a human life. Because of one i***t scratch, the bite I should have never made, and I have changed our path of the future. "It was an accident." ... "I am sorry." My uncontrollable anger tricks me and turns me into a bloodthirsty vampire. "So, stop me if I am wrong..." I am lucky that our bloodline has a meaning, otherwise, our father would have to abandon a second son, "You accidentally changed form, led him into the forest and bit him? You accidentally did that?" The bulging vein from his forehead nearly bursts, and his shark-dangerous fangs erupt triggering mine. "No brother, he was already in the forest at the time." "What have you done? Do you know who he is?" He falls back onto his chair rubbing his eyes with his fingers and forcing his hand onto his desk, splitting it down the side even more recently from our last quarrel. "He is one of the Hunters!" He growls. "I know." "He isn't the only hunter here. The one that's still in the school, what if she finds out, and like you said brother, she is powerful, and she cannot control the urge to kill us. And you just gave her the motive." His eyes rage, and the veins flow like a river over his cheeks, "Where is he?" "At his home," ... "He is in transition." "Then let's go before he kills someone." ... "Then the blood is on your hands, brother." "That's if he survives the transformation," I growl back.
