Four Years Later.
The harsh, freezing wind of the Dead Lands howled outside the fortress walls, but I didn't feel the cold. I hadn't felt the cold in four years.
Standing on the high balcony overlooking the snow-covered training grounds, I watched the Lycan warriors run through their combat drills. I wasn't wearing rags anymore. I wore a stunning, tailored coat of midnight-blue velvet lined with black fur, a silver crown resting securely on my braided dark hair.
I took a deep breath, letting the crisp northern air fill my lungs.
"They are getting faster," Lyra, my wolf, purred in my mind.
I smiled. Lyra wasn't a whisper in the dark anymore. She was a magnificent, terrifying beast. When she finally awakened during my first year in the North, she wasn't a standard brown or gray wolf. She was a massive, ancient Shadow Wolf—a rare bloodline thought to be extinct. Her fur was the color of an abyss, and her eyes were glowing, piercing silver. I wasn't just a Luna; I was a true Lycan Queen, holding my own power.
"Mama! Look at me!"
A high-pitched, joyful voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I looked down at the courtyard. Running through the thick snow, moving with an unnatural speed and agility for a four-year-old, was my son. Lucian.
My heart swelled with a fierce, overwhelming love. Lucian had my dark hair and my pale skin, but everything else about him was purely of the North. During my pregnancy, Valerius’s constant flow of Lycan magic had rewritten the child's biology. Lucian didn't have the weak, diluted blood of the Silver Moon Pack. He was a Lycan Prince, complete with Valerius’s terrifying strength and, occasionally, his glowing crimson eyes when he threw a tantrum.
Right behind Lucian, chasing him through the snow with a booming, genuine laugh, was the Devil of the North himself.
Valerius caught up to the boy, scooping him up into his massive, muscular arms and throwing him into the air. Lucian shrieked with laughter, completely fearless as his father caught him and pulled him against his chest.
Watching the most feared warlord on the continent press soft kisses to my son’s freezing cheeks brought tears of absolute gratitude to my eyes. Valerius had kept his vow. He was the most devoted, fiercely protective father in the world. Lucian didn't know the name Kaelen. To him, Valerius was his only father, his hero, his King.
"My Queen," a deep voice interrupted my thoughts.
I turned from the balcony to see Cassius, Valerius's Beta, standing in the doorway of my chambers. He bowed his head respectfully.
"Cassius," I greeted him warmly. "What is it?"
Cassius’s scarred face was tense, his jaw locked tight. "A perimeter patrol has intercepted a party at the southern border. They are requesting an urgent audience with the King."
I frowned. "Rogues?"
"No, my Queen," Cassius growled, the disgust evident in his tone. "It is an envoy from the Silver Moon Pack. Led by Alpha Kaelen himself."
The name sent a phantom chill down my spine, a ghost of a memory from a lifetime ago.
"Why is he here?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.
"The Southern packs are suffering," Cassius explained. "A brutal famine has struck their lands. Their crops are dead, their prey has migrated, and their wolves are starving. It is said the Moon Goddess cursed his lands the day he rejected his True Mate. Kaelen has come to beg the North for a trade treaty. He brought his Luna, Selene, and a small guard."
I turned back to the balcony. Below, Valerius had stopped playing. He was looking up at me, his storm-gray eyes already bleeding into crimson. He had heard the conversation through his heightened Lycan hearing. The murderous intent rolling off his massive body melted the snow around his boots.
Valerius handed Lucian to one of the royal nannies and blurred into the castle. Less than a minute later, the heavy doors to my chamber swung open, and my mate stalked in.
"Give me the word, Elara," Valerius snarled, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and pulling my back flush against his chest. "Say the word, and I will walk to the gates and tear his head from his neck. I will leave his body in the snow for the crows."
I leaned my head back against his shoulder, letting his intoxicating scent of spices and leather calm my racing heart.
Four years ago, I would have hidden under the bed. Four years ago, the thought of Kaelen being near me would have paralyzed me with fear.
But I wasn't the frightened Omega in the dirt anymore.
"No," I whispered, a dark, wicked smile curling on my lips. "Do not kill him at the gates."
Valerius paused, his nose burying into the crook of my neck. "What do you want to do with him, my Queen?"
"Let him in," I said, my voice dripping with anticipation. "Let him walk into the Obsidian Court. Let him drop to his knees and beg you for food. I want to look down at him from my throne and watch the exact moment his world shatters."
A low, vibrating purr of absolute approval rumbled deep in Valerius's chest. He kissed my mark on my neck.
"As you wish, little wolf."
An hour later, the massive iron doors of the Throne Room groaned open.
I sat on the obsidian throne, my spine perfectly straight, the silver crown resting heavy on my head. Valerius sat beside me, his massive frame radiating lethal authority. At the base of the dais, Cassius and nine other Lycan warriors stood like statues of death.
Through the doors walked Alpha Kaelen.
I almost didn't recognize him. The proud, arrogant Alpha who had banished me was gone. He looked exhausted. His golden hair was dull, his face gaunt, and his clothes, while still expensive, hung loosely on his frame. Beside him walked Selene, wrapping a fur cloak tightly around herself, shivering violently in the ambient cold of the Lycan fortress. She looked miserable.
They were escorted down the long aisle of black marble.
Kaelen kept his eyes respectfully lowered to the floor. He was terrified. He knew he was walking into the Devil's lair, breaking the warning note he had received four years ago. But desperation and starvation had driven him here.
"Stop," Cassius commanded when they reached the bottom of the dais. "Bow before the King and Queen of the North."
Kaelen swallowed hard. He dropped to one knee, forcing Selene to do the same beside him.
"King Valerius," Kaelen began, his voice raspy and devoid of its usual Alpha command. He kept his eyes on the floor, staring at Valerius's boots. "I know I have transgressed by crossing your borders. But my pack is dying. The winter in the South has not ended in three years. We bring gold, artifacts, anything you desire. We beg you for an alliance and a share of your meat."
Valerius didn't speak. He simply leaned back in his throne, resting his chin on his knuckles.
The silence stretched, heavy and humiliating.
"Please, Your Majesty," Selene whimpered, her vanity completely broken. "We have pups starving. We will offer our submission to your empire."
"Look at me."
My voice cut through the cavernous hall. It wasn't the quiet, trembling whisper of a maid. It was the rich, commanding, echoing voice of an Obsidian Queen.
Kaelen froze. His shoulders tensed. He recognized the tone, but his brain refused to process it. Slowly, trembling, Kaelen lifted his head from the floor.
His eyes traveled up the black marble steps, past Cassius, past the hem of my midnight-blue velvet dress, until his gaze locked directly onto my face.
The silence that followed was so absolute, I could hear the erratic, terrified thumping of Kaelen’s heart.
All the blood drained from his face. His lips parted in a silent, horrified gasp. His golden eyes widened until they looked like they would burst from his skull. Beside him, Selene let out a choked, breathless squeak, clapping a hand over her mouth as if she had just seen a ghost.
"Hello, Alpha Kaelen," I said smoothly, a cold, merciless smile playing on my lips. "It seems your pack is only as strong as its weakest link after all."
Kaelen’s jaw moved, but no words came out. His mind was breaking. He was kneeling in the dirt, begging for scraps of meat from the exact same woman he had thrown away in the mud four years ago.
"E-Elara?" Kaelen finally choked out, the name ripping from his throat like a dry sob.
Valerius let out a deafening, terrifying roar that shook the very foundations of the castle. His eyes burned crimson red as he shot forward on his throne.
"Address her as Queen," Valerius snarled, the raw power of his voice forcing Kaelen and Selene to collapse flat on their stomachs in pure, agonizing submission. "Or I will tear your tongue from your mouth."
