The Obsidian Court

1691 Words
For the first time in eighteen years, I wasn't woken up by a bucket of freezing water or a sharp kick to the ribs. I woke up to the smell of roasted meat, fresh bread, and the crackling warmth of the fireplace. I blinked, my heavy eyelids fluttering open as I sat up in the massive bed. For a terrifying second, I thought the events of last night were a fever dream. I expected to see the moldy wooden beams of my attic. But I was still here. In the fortress of the Devil. I looked down at my hands. The bruises on my knuckles were gone. The deep, bloody scratches from my desperate run through the forest had vanished, leaving behind flawless, pale skin. Valerius’s Lycan magic hadn't just healed my body; it had erased the physical evidence of my trauma. "He is powerful," Lyra purred in my mind, her voice vibrating with deep, rumbling satisfaction. "Our King is strong." I pushed the heavy black furs off my legs and swung my feet over the edge of the bed. The stone floor was surprisingly warm, heated by some ancient architectural design I couldn't comprehend. A silver tray sat on a massive oak table near the fire. It was piled high with more food than I had seen in my entire life. Thick cuts of steak, roasted potatoes, fresh berries, and steaming pastries. My stomach growled so violently it actually ached. In the Silver Moon Pack, I survived on the scraps left on the plates after the high-ranking wolves finished eating. I took a hesitant step toward the table, my mouth watering. I reached out a trembling hand to take a single strawberry, half-expecting someone to jump out of the shadows and slap my wrist. The heavy oak door swung open. I gasped, snatching my hand back and instinctively dropping my gaze to the floor, my shoulders hunched in submission. It was a reflex burned into my bones. "Do not lower your head." Valerius’s voice was a dark, commanding rumble that sent a shiver straight down my spine. I slowly forced myself to look up. Valerius stepped into the room, ducking slightly to clear the massive doorway. He was wearing dark leather pants and a black tunic that stretched tight across his chest. He looked like a warlord fresh off a battlefield, but his storm-gray eyes softened the moment they locked onto mine. He closed the door behind him and stared at the distance between me and the food tray. He noticed my trembling posture. His jaw ticked, a muscle feathering under his dark stubble as he realized why I was cowering. "Did they starve you?" he asked. The question was quiet, but the lethal edge in his tone made the air in the room turn heavy and oppressive. "I... I ate what was left," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Omegas eat last." A low, guttural snarl ripped from Valerius's chest. His eyes flashed crimson red for a fraction of a second. He took three large strides across the room, closing the distance between us. I braced myself, but his massive hands simply came up to gently cup my face. His thumbs brushed my cheekbones. "You are not an Omega," Valerius stated, his voice a fierce, possessive vow. "You are Elara. And in this kingdom, you eat first. If you want a strawberry, you take the entire field. If someone tries to stop you, I will sever their hands from their wrists. Do you understand me?" Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. No one had ever spoken to me like this. No one had ever fiercely protected my right to simply exist. I nodded slowly. Valerius’s intense gaze dropped to my lips, lingering there for a breathless second, before he pulled his hands away and gestured to a massive mahogany wardrobe in the corner. "Eat. Then get dressed," he instructed, his tone shifting from warlord to protective mate. "My inner circle is waiting to meet their Queen." Panic spiked in my chest. "Meet them? But... I don't have a wolf. And I'm carrying—" "You are carrying the heir to the North," Valerius interrupted, his voice leaving no room for argument. "And my court will bow to you, or they will bleed. I will wait outside." He gave me one last lingering, burning look before stepping out of the room. I stood there for a moment, my heart hammering against my ribs. I turned to the table and, with shaking hands, picked up a piece of warm bread. I took a bite. It was the most delicious thing I had ever tasted. I ate until I was comfortably full, something I hadn't experienced since I was ten years old. Once I was finished, I walked over to the wardrobe. When I pulled the heavy doors open, I gasped. It wasn't filled with old, torn dresses or dull gray maid uniforms. It was a sea of exquisite silk, velvet, and leather. The colors were dark and regal—obsidian black, deep emerald, and blood red. I reached for a dress that caught my eye. It was a stunning, dark crimson gown with long sleeves, made of a heavy, luxurious fabric that felt like liquid against my skin. It hugged my waist perfectly—before flowing down to the floor. I slipped it on, pairing it with a set of soft black leather boots I found at the bottom of the wardrobe. I walked over to the full-length mirror near the fireplace. I didn't recognize the girl staring back at me. The pathetic, dirty Omega of the Silver Moon Pack was gone. Her hair was brushed and falling in dark waves over her shoulders. Her skin was clean and glowing with the residual magic of the Lycan King. The crimson dress made her look dangerous. Untouchable. I took a deep breath, squaring my shoulders. Lyra pushed forward in my mind, lending me her newfound strength. I opened the bedroom door. Valerius was leaning against the stone wall in the corridor. When he heard the door open, he turned. His breath hitched audibly. His storm-gray eyes darkened, pupils blowing wide until his eyes were almost entirely black. "Moon Goddess," he breathed out, pushing himself off the wall. He stalked toward me, his gaze practically devouring me. "You are... breathtaking." Before I could blush, he offered me his arm. I hesitated for a second before sliding my hand over his thick bicep. It felt like holding onto solid granite. He led me down a series of massive, torch-lit stone corridors. The sheer scale of the fortress was intimidating. Finally, we stopped in front of a pair of towering iron double doors. "They will smell my scent on you, and they will smell the child," Valerius said quietly, looking down at me. "Do not flinch. Do not look down. You are above them all." He pushed the doors open. We stepped into the Throne Room. It was a cavernous hall, lined with massive pillars of black marble. At the far end, raised on a dais, stood two thrones carved from pure obsidian. But it wasn't the room that made my breath catch. It was the men waiting inside. Ten Lycans stood in two rows, forming an aisle leading to the thrones. They were all massive, scarred, and terrifyingly lethal. The air in the room was suffocatingly thick with their combined power. In my old pack, just standing near Kaelen’s Betas made me dizzy. This room was a hundred times more oppressive. I felt my instinct telling me to drop my eyes, to bare my neck in submission. But Valerius subtly tightened his arm around mine, anchoring me to his side. His message was clear: Stand tall. As we walked down the aisle, the ten massive Lycans inhaled. I saw their nostrils flare. They caught my scent. The sweet vanilla of my natural scent, heavily masked by the dark spices of Valerius's claim. And beneath it all, the faint, undeniable scent of a growing pup. A towering man with a jagged scar across his left eye stepped forward. He was Valerius's Beta, Cassius. A warrior known across the continent for slaughtering an entire rogue pack single-handedly. Cassius looked at me. His sharp eyes scanned my face, dropping to my stomach, and then locking onto Valerius. For a terrifying, agonizing moment, the room was completely silent. I braced for the insults. I waited for them to call me a defect, a w***e, a wolfless mistake. Instead, Cassius took a step back. The most lethal warrior in the North dropped to one knee, bowing his head and exposing his neck to me in a display of absolute, unquestionable submission. "Long live the Queen," Cassius rumbled. In perfect unison, the other nine Lycan warriors dropped to their knees, their voices echoing through the cavernous hall like thunder. "Long live the Queen!" Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes. They weren't rejecting me. They weren't questioning the child. They were worshipping me. Valerius let go of my arm, stepping up onto the dais and taking his seat on the larger obsidian throne. He looked at me, his eyes burning with dark pride, and gestured to the empty throne beside him. "Take your seat, Elara," Valerius commanded softly. I walked up the steps and sat on the throne. The cold obsidian against my palms felt like power. Real power. Before anyone could speak, the heavy iron doors at the back of the hall burst open. A Lycan scout ran in, his chest heaving, his boots covered in fresh snow. He didn't even stop to catch his breath before dropping to one knee. "My King," the scout gasped. "Border patrol sends an urgent report. A hunting party from the Silver Moon Pack has been spotted two miles from the boundary line." My blood ran cold. Kaelen. Valerius didn't even blink. He slowly leaned forward on his throne, his jaw clenching as a dark, terrifying smile curved his lips. "Excellent," the Devil of the North whispered, his crimson eyes igniting. "Let them cross. It’s time I sent Alpha Kaelen a gift."
