The Obsidian Trap

Alpha Kaelen’s POV Morana’s dark magic worked flawlessly. A thick, unnatural gray fog rolled through the freezing valleys of the North, clinging to the ground like a suffocating blanket. The Blood Veil. It masked our scent, swallowed our footsteps, and blinded the ancient Lycan wards. I marched at the front of a three-hundred-strong rogue army. They were feral, bloodthirsty beasts, their ribs showing through their matted fur, driven entirely by the promise of Southern meat and the slaughter of the Northern elite. We approached the towering, black iron gates of the Obsidian Court. I held my breath, expecting the deafening howl of a Lycan sentry, or the violent thud of a spear hitting the snow. But there was nothing. The towering battlements of the fortress were completely empty. The perimeter patrols were gone. The Devil of the North, in all his terrifying arrogance, had left his front door wide open. "Fools," I whispered, a manic thrill racing through my veins. I gestured to the rogue commanders. With a heavy, echoing groan, they pushed the massive iron gates open. We spilled into the colossal main courtyard of the fortress. It was eerily quiet. The massive stone walls loomed over us, lost in the dark fog. I gripped my silver-forged broadsword, my golden Alpha eyes scanning the shadows. Valerius was probably asleep in his high tower, completely unaware that his kingdom was about to fall, and his "Queen" was about to be dragged back to the South where she belonged. "Fan out," I ordered the rogues in a low whisper. "Kill the guards in their sleep. Leave the King to me. I want the Omega and the boy taken alive." The feral wolves bared their yellow teeth, dispersing into the thick fog to storm the lower levels of the castle. I took a step toward the grand double doors of the main keep, tasting victory. Clack. The sound of a single, heavy boot stepping onto stone echoed through the courtyard. It wasn't a loud sound, but it cut through the magical fog with a terrifying, absolute authority that made my blood run ice-cold. The gray fog of the Blood Veil didn't dissipate. It was violently ripped apart. All around the courtyard, hundreds of massive iron torches ignited simultaneously. But the flames weren't red or orange. They were a blinding, ethereal, glowing silver. I stumbled backward, throwing my arm up to shield my eyes. As my vision adjusted, my breath completely left my lungs. The battlements weren't empty. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder on the high walls, entirely surrounding the courtyard, were hundreds of Lycan warriors. They hadn't been blind to our approach. They had been waiting. And standing at the top of the grand staircase leading to the main keep, looking down at me as if I were a diseased rat caught in a cage, was Valerius. He wasn't wearing armor. He was wearing his dark leather combat trousers and a sleeveless tunic, his massive arms crossed over his chest. His eyes were already glowing a bright, murderous crimson red, illuminating the shadows of his sharp jawline. "Alpha Kaelen," Valerius's deep, rumbling voice echoed across the courtyard, vibrating with a dark, terrifying amusement. "I must say, I am insulted. You broke into my home, and you didn't even bring a proper army. Just... trash." Around me, the rogue wolves began to panic. They snapped their jaws, realizing they were completely surrounded by heavily armed, immortal predators. "How?" I choked out, my grip slipping on my sword. "The Veil... the witch's magic..." "Did you honestly think a cheap parlor trick from the Wastes could blind the true Queen of the North?" The voice didn't come from Valerius. It came from the shadows. Beside Valerius, the darkness seemed to physically fold in on itself. A blur of black mist swirled onto the stone steps, materializing into a solid form. Elara. She wore tight, reinforced black combat leather, her dark hair braided tight. But it wasn't her clothes that made my heart stop. It was her eyes. The soft brown I had known for eighteen years was gone, replaced by a glowing, terrifying silver fire. The shadows of the courtyard seemed to bend and twist around her fingertips, answering to her command. "A Shadow Wolf," one of the rogue commanders gasped in horror, taking a step backward. "They are extinct! It's a myth!" "She is no myth," Valerius snarled, unfolding his arms. The playful amusement vanished from his face, replaced by the feral, bloodthirsty wrath of the Devil himself. He slowly descended the first few steps, his Lycan fangs elongating past his bottom lip. "You brought feral dogs to my gates," Valerius roared, his Alpha command so powerful it made the stone courtyard tremble. "You threatened my Queen. You threatened my Heir!" He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't need one. "Slaughter them," Valerius commanded. "Leave none alive." The courtyard erupted into absolute c*****e. The Lycan warriors didn't climb down the stairs. They leaped directly from the high battlements, crashing into the rogue army like falling boulders. The sound of snapping bone, tearing flesh, and agonizing howls filled the night air. It wasn't a battle. It was an execution. A massive rogue lunged at me, its mind shattered by the panic. I drove my sword into its chest, throwing the carcass aside just in time to see Valerius enter the fray. The Lycan King was a god of war. He moved with a speed that defied logic, his massive, bare hands tearing through rogue wolves as if they were made of wet paper. He ripped heads from shoulders and snapped spines with sickening ease, his dark clothing rapidly turning a deep, wet crimson. I backed away, panic gripping my throat. My army was being decimated in seconds. I had to get out. I had to run. I turned toward the open iron gates, desperate to escape into the snow. But a wall of solid black mist slammed into the ground directly in front of me, solidifying into the shape of a woman. Elara stood blocking my exit. "Going somewhere, Kaelen?" she asked, her voice echoing with that terrifying, metallic resonance. "Move, Elara!" I roared, swinging my silver broadsword in a desperate arc toward her neck. I expected her to flinch. I expected her to cower. She didn't even blink. Elara stepped into the strike. She raised her arm, and a gauntlet of pure, solidified shadows formed over her forearm. My silver blade struck the shadow armor with a deafening CLANG, the impact sending a violent shockwave up my arm that nearly dislocated my shoulder. Before I could recover, Elara’s hand shot out. Her fingers wrapped around my throat with a crushing, unnatural strength. She lifted me. My boots left the stone floor. I dropped my sword, clawing desperately at her iron grip, my legs kicking in the air. "You told the pack I was a defect," Elara whispered, pulling me closer until her glowing silver eyes burned into my soul. "You told them I was a weak, useless Omega who couldn't protect herself. You threw me to the monsters." Behind her, the sounds of the dying rogue army began to fade, replaced by the heavy, coordinated breathing of victorious Lycan warriors. I gasped for air, black spots dancing in my vision. "Look at me now, Kaelen," the Obsidian Queen commanded, her voice vibrating with ancient, terrifying power. "I am the monster." With a flick of her wrist, Elara threw me across the courtyard. I crashed into the stone pillar of the main gates, my vision exploding in a flash of white pain. I collapsed into the snow and blood, unable to move, unable to breathe. Heavy, blood-soaked boots stepped into my line of sight. Valerius stood over me, his chest heaving, his face splattered with the blood of my army. He looked down at me with absolute, unadulterated disgust. "Lock him in the deep dungeons," Valerius ordered Cassius, who stepped up beside him. The King’s crimson eyes burned into mine. "Let him rot in the dark until tomorrow. I want the entire Court present for his execution."
