When Silence Speaks

⸻ Chapter 30 Lola’s Apartment – Early Evening Lola moved around her kitchen, humming softly as the kettle began to steam. The scent of peppermint and lemon balm filled the small, warm space. She reached for her favorite mug — the one that read ‘Queen of Calm’ — when the doorbell rang. She frowned slightly, wiping her hands on a towel as she walked to the door. The last person she expected to see on the other side was standing there, his jaw tight, lips pressed in a line of frustration. Alex. Lola (flatly): “Alex. What are you doing here?” Alex’s eyes were restless, shoulders stiff, hands clenched into fists at his sides. He stepped forward, just barely inside the threshold. Alex: “I need to talk. Please. Just five minutes. It’s about Aria.” Lola crossed her arms, holding her ground. Her voice remained cold. Lola: “Make it quick.” He stepped in without being invited, pacing slightly like a caged animal. The storm he carried with him made the air feel heavier. Alex: “I don’t know what she’s told you, but I’ve done everything for Aria. I paid off her family’s debt when nobody else would. I stood by her when her world was falling apart. And now… she’s shutting me out. Acting distant. Cold.” Lola didn’t flinch. Lola: “Because you’re controlling, Alex. You don’t give her space. You treat her like something you own.” Alex (defensive): “No! That’s not it. I care about her, damn it. She’s mine. I just… I don’t get what changed. Is it someone else? Is that what this is about?” Lola stepped closer, her tone sharp as a blade. Lola: “First of all, Aria doesn’t belong to anyone. And if she’s seeing someone else — which, by the way, she hasn’t told me — that’s her business. You don’t get to question her just because you threw money around like it would buy her loyalty.” Alex (voice rising): “She owes me! After everything I’ve done—” Lola (cutting him off): “She. Owes. You. Nothing.” Her voice echoed in the small apartment. Lola: “If you loved her, if you actually respected her, you’d support her freedom — not treat her love like a debt to repay.” Alex’s face twisted — between confusion, hurt, and rage. But he said nothing. Lola didn’t back down. Lola: “You’re not the victim here, Alex. You’re the one who’s been using guilt to trap her. And I’m not about to let you drag that darkness into my home.” A heavy silence fell between them. Finally, Alex scoffed bitterly and turned for the door. Alex (quietly): “So that’s it? Everyone’s turning against me now?” Lola (firmly): “No, Alex. You’re pushing people away all by yourself.” He left, slamming the door behind him. Lola locked it with a click, then leaned against the wood for a moment, her heartbeat still fast. She exhaled sharply and pulled out her phone, scrolling to Aria’s name and pressing call. Lola (on phone): “Hey babe. You need to know… he came here. Alex. He showed up unannounced. Looked pissed, like he’s unraveling. You okay?” ⸻ Aria’s Apartment – Night The scent of lavender floated through the room like a soft lullaby. Aria stepped out of the bathroom wrapped in her favorite pale lilac robe, her damp hair falling around her shoulders. She walked barefoot across the carpet, the soft fabric brushing her skin. The world outside was beginning to dim, and the apartment felt like a quiet sanctuary. She tossed her towel on the laundry basket, then picked up her phone from the coffee table and checked the screen. Nothing yet. The clock read 6:55 PM. She sat on the couch, tucking her knees under her robe, and stared at the phone. The way it always came up — “ID withheld” — gave the calls an air of mystery, but she always knew. Her heart knew. She held the phone to her chest, the memory of the dream from last night still vivid in her mind. She could feel his arms again. Hear his voice. Smell the faint scent of wildflowers and rain that clung to the air in the garden of her dream. Aria (softly, to herself): “Well, Elion… if you don’t call tonight, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to see you in my dreams again.” She sighed, letting her head fall back on the couch cushion, the lights dimmed low. Just as her eyes began to flutter shut— [Phone ringing…] Her eyes snapped open. A soft gasp escaped her lips. She picked it up quickly and answered. Aria: “Hello?” Elion (his voice warm, steady): “Hi, Aria.” Her name in his voice was like a balm. She smiled instantly, curling deeper into the couch. Aria: “You called.” Elion: “I said I would.” Aria: “I know… I just wasn’t sure. Sometimes I wonder if I’m imagining all of this.” Elion: “You’re not. I’m real. As real as this moment, right now.” There was a pause — not empty, but full of all the things they didn’t have words for yet. Elion: “You sound… softer tonight.” Aria: “It’s been a day.” Elion: “Do you want to talk about it?” She hesitated, chewing lightly on her lip before nodding. Aria: “Yeah. Um… Alex went to see Lola. At her place. He just… showed up. Said I was acting distant. Accused me of pulling away. Like he doesn’t know why.” Elion’s voice hardened slightly, though still controlled. Elion: “Did he threaten her?” Aria: “No. But he was angry. She said he was pacing, ranting. Said I owe him something because of the money he spent. Because he ‘stood by me.’” Elion: “And do you think that makes you his?” Aria: “No. Not anymore.” Elion: “Good. Because love isn’t owed. It’s given — freely, without price, without chains.” She swallowed a lump in her throat. Aria: “Then why does it still feel like I’m running from something that clings to me?” Elion: “Because when someone tries to own you, they don’t let go easily. But you are not his to own, Aria. You never were. You are your own soul. Beautiful. Brave. You deserve someone who chooses you — not someone who cages you.” A long silence stretched between them. Aria: “Sometimes I wish I could see your face when you say things like that.” Elion: “Someday… maybe you will.” She let out a small laugh, tinged with sadness and hope. Aria: “Do you think I’m selfish for wanting more? For wanting to be happy even after someone saved me?” Elion: “No. I think you’re human. And I think you’re finally remembering that you’re allowed to want joy.” Aria leaned her head against the cushion, the room spinning softly with emotion. Aria: “You sound so sure.” Elion: “I am. Because I see you. Even when you doubt yourself — I don’t.” She didn’t know what to say to that. So she didn’t say anything at all. Instead, she closed her eyes and let the silence hold them both. Elion: “I wish I could be there with you. Not just this voice in the night.” Aria: “I wish that too.” He was quiet for a moment, then added: Elion: “But even from afar… I’ll keep showing up. Every night. Until your heart doesn’t ache anymore.” Aria felt something deep inside her stir. She had never felt this kind of connection with anyone. Not like this. Aria (softly): “Thank you.” Elion: “Sleep soon. And dream, if you can. I’ll be nearby.” Aria: “Will you call again tomorrow?” Elion: “Always.” They stayed on the line for a few more seconds before she whispered goodbye and ended the call. She placed the phone beside her pillow, her heart beating gently in her chest like the rhythm of a lullaby. The soft hum of the TV filled the background, but her thoughts were far away — across realms, across reason. Aria: “I don’t even know who you really are… but somehow, you make me feel seen.” She turned off the light, curling up on the couch, her hair still damp, her skin scented with lavender and hope. The call had come. He had called. Still, before her eyes closed, she whispered one final wish into the darkness. Aria: “If not your voice tomorrow… then maybe just a dream. One more sweet dream.” And with a sleepy, gentle smile on her lips, Aria drifted off — heart full, soul quiet, and the sound of Elion’s voice still echoing in her ears.
