Chapter 18 “No!” the king cried. The doorway to the other world closed with the sound of metal cracking against granite. The glowing runes on the standing stones went dark, like a lamp suddenly extinguished. I had reached the knot of people beside him—which included Thorne—and drew up, heart racing. “Galadhir.” Lord Raine turned to Thorne, his expression thunderous. “You must fetch my daughter back. Immediately.” “Your majesty, I cannot leave your people stranded within the Darkwood.” Thorne’s words were measured, though I heard the edge of panic in his voice. “As soon as I send you all back to the castle, then I’ll go after Neeve. But surely the Nightshade Lord will expel her from Elfhame.” Recalling what I’d glimpsed of my stepsister’s conversation with her uncle, I had my doubts.
