RISING FROM ASHES

1801 Words
The road ahead was long. Elena didn’t look back. Not once. The car moved steadily through the quiet streets, leaving behind the mansion, the memories, and the life she once thought would last forever. Axel sat beside her, his small hand still wrapped around hers. “Mommy,” he said softly, “are we going far?” Elena glanced at him and gave a small smile. “Yes,” she said. “Very far.” “How far?” She paused for a moment. Then she answered honestly. “Far enough that we can start again.” Axel nodded, as if he understood more than she expected. He leaned his head against her arm and closed his eyes. Within minutes, he fell asleep. Elena watched him quietly. Her chest tightened. This child… Her child. The only thing she had done right. She gently brushed his hair back, her fingers soft. “I won’t let anyone hurt you,” she whispered. Not anymore. ***************************** Three hours later, the car stopped in front of a modest apartment building. It wasn’t grand. It wasn’t luxurious. But it was quiet. And most importantly, It was hers. Elena stepped out first, then carefully carried Axel in her arms. He stirred slightly but didn’t wake. She took a deep breath. She felt like she could breathe properly, after many years of betrayal from her ex-husband. Inside, the apartment was simple. It was clean, and warm. There was nothing fancy, but everything felt… safe. Elena placed Axel on the bed in the small bedroom and covered him with a blanket. He shifted slightly, mumbling in his sleep. “Mommy…” “I’m here,” she whispered. She stayed there for a moment, watching him. Then she turned and walked out. There was something she needed to do. Elena sat at the small table in the living room. Her phone lay in front of her. Her fingers hovered over it. For a long time, she didn’t move. Her heart beat faster. Not from fear. But from something else. Something she hadn’t felt in a long time. Determination. Finally, she picked up the phone and dialed a number she hadn’t called in years. The line rang once. Twice. Three times. Then........ “Hello?” The voice on the other end was calm. Elena closed her eyes briefly. “It’s me,” she said. There was silence. Then, “Elena?” The tone changed instantly. “You’re calling me?” “Yes.” Another pause. “I thought you disappeared for good,” the man said. “So did I,” she replied quietly. A soft chuckle came from the other side. “Well,” he said, “this is interesting.” Elena tightened her grip on the phone. “I need your help.” Straight to the point. No hesitation. No pride left to protect. “Do you?” he said lightly. “The Elena I knew never asked for help.” “That Elena is gone.” The words came out steadily. “Good,” he said. “I didn’t like her much.” Despite everything, Elena let out a small breath. “Can you meet me?” she asked. “When?” “Tomorrow.” “Location?” She gave him the address. There was a brief pause. “Alright,” he said. “I’ll be there.” The call ended. Elena lowered the phone slowly. Her hands were shaking again. But this time— Not from pain. But from anticipation. **************************** The next morning came quickly. Elena woke up early. She stood in front of the mirror. Her reflection stared back at her. The same face, the same eyes. But something had changed. She could see it now. The softness was gone. She tied her hair back neatly. Put on a simple but clean outfit. No makeup. No extra effort. But she looked… different. Not like a wife. Not like someone waiting to be loved. But like someone ready to take control. “Mommy?” Axel’s voice came from behind. She turned. He stood at the door, rubbing his eyes. “Good morning,” she said with a smile. He walked over and hugged her. “Where are we going today?” he asked. Elena crouched down. “To meet someone important,” she said. “Who?” She smiled slightly. “Someone who is going to help us.” Axel nodded. “Okay.” He trusted her. Completely. That trust gave her strength. ****************************** An hour later, they sat in a quiet café. Elena checked the time. He was late. Just like before. Some things never changed. “Mommy,” Axel said, pointing at the window, “is that him?” Elena looked up. And froze. A tall man walked toward the café. Dressed in a dark suit. His steps were calm. Confident. Like he owned the ground he walked on. When he entered, his eyes scanned the room. Then landed on her. And for a moment, Time stood still. “Elena.” He said her name like it meant something. She stood up slowly. “It’s been a while, Marcus.” Marcus Hale. The man she once trusted more than anyone. The man she left behind without a word. The man who… used to understand her. He looked at her carefully. From head to toe. His gaze was sharp. “You’ve changed,” he said. “So have you,” she replied. He smirked slightly. “Not really.” His eyes moved to Axel. “And who is this?” Elena placed a hand on Axel’s shoulder. “My son,” she said. Marcus raised an eyebrow. “Your son?” “Yes.” There was a brief silence “Interesting.” He pulled out a chair and sat down. “So,” he said, leaning back slightly, “what kind of trouble are you in?” Elena sat as well. She didn’t hesitate. “I got divorced.” Marcus blinked. Then laughed. “Wow,” he said. “I didn’t expect that.” She didn’t smile. “It’s not funny.” His laughter faded. “Alright,” he said. “Tell me everything.” And she did. Not all the details. But enough. The marriage, the betrayal and the divorce. Marcus listened quietly. His expression changed as she spoke. From amusement, to seriousness. When she finished, he leaned forward slightly. “So,” he said slowly, “you finally woke up.” Elena didn’t react. “I need to rebuild,” she said. “From nothing.” Marcus studied her. “Why should I help you?” The question was direct. Elena met his gaze. “Because you know what I’m capable of.” Marcus smiled. Not a friendly smile. A dangerous one. “That’s true,” he said. He leaned back again. “I remember the girl who could outthink everyone in the room,” he continued. “The one who didn’t need anyone’s approval.” Elena’s fingers tightened slightly. “That girl made a mistake,” she said. Marcus shook his head. “No,” he corrected. “That girl got distracted.” His eyes locked onto hers. “But I can still see her.” The words hit deep. Elena didn’t speak. Because she wasn’t sure if it was true. “Alright,” Marcus said finally. “I’ll help you.” She blinked. “…Just like that?” “Not for free,” he added. Of course. Nothing was ever free. “What do you want?” she asked. Marcus leaned forward. “Everything.” Elena frowned. “What does that mean?” “It means,” he said calmly, “if I help you rise, you don’t get to walk away again.” His gaze was intense. “You build with me. You stay.” Elena hesitated. This wasn’t just help. This was a deal. A binding one. She glanced at Axel. Then back at Marcus. “Fine,” she said. Marcus smiled. “Good.” He reached into his pocket and placed a card on the table. “Elena,” he said, his tone really serious now, “welcome back.” ************************ Three months later. Everything had changed. The small apartment was gone. Replaced by a high-rise office. Elena stood in front of the glass window, looking down at the city. The same city. But it looked different now. Because she was different. “Miss Vale.” The name still felt new. But she didn’t correct it. She had chosen it. Left her past behind. “Yes?” she replied. Her assistant stepped forward. “The meeting is ready.” Elena nodded. “I’ll be there.” She turned. Her heels clicked softly against the floor. She looked really confident. When she entered the meeting room, all eyes turned to her. Powerful men, experienced and older But none of them spoke. Because they were waiting for her. Elena walked to the head of the table. Sat down. And smiled slightly. “Let’s begin,” she said. Her voice was calm. But strong. And in that moment, No one saw the woman who had been betrayed. No one saw the broken wife. All they saw, Was power. ***************************** Across the city, in the Vaughn Corporation, Dominic sat in his office. His eyes were on the report in front of him. But his mind was elsewhere. “Sir,” his assistant said, “there’s a new company entering the market.” Dominic didn’t look up. “Name?” “Phoenix Group.” His pen stopped. For a moment, Everything felt… familiar. “Who’s behind it?” he asked. The assistant hesitated. “We don’t know yet,” he said. “But they’ve already taken three major deals.” Dominic’s expression darkened. “Find out,” he said. “Yes, sir.” The assistant left. Dominic leaned back in his chair. Phoenix. The name replayed in his mind. For some reason, He couldn’t ignore it. **************************** Eena stood alone on the balcony. The wind brushed against her face. Her phone buzzed, it was a message. From Marcus. “You did well today.” She typed back. “Thank you, but I want you to know this is just the beginning.” She paused. Then added— “I’m ready to punish my ex husband fora every he has caused me, and I'm not stopping.” A reply came quickly. “Good, let's really make him suffer." “Dominic Vaughn,” she whispered. Her voice carried in the wind. “You said this marriage shouldn’t have happened.” A faint smile touched her lips. “You’re right.” She turned. Walking back inside. “But what comes next…” Her voice dropped. “You won’t be ready to see my sudden rise.”
