My heart began to race. Would I be caught? What would I do? Perhaps, I should confess before I get caught.
“Search” One of the guards carrying the carriage answered, stopping the carriage. No.
“What do you mean? We are late. Is this the first time we would be leaving the palace?” The other guard argued, he was disappointed.
He then turned to the other” How can you ask them to search when we are late? The items are plenty, you fool”.
“It is a royal decree to search everything brought in and taken out of the palace” One of the guards at the gate answered.
“We are late. What is this drama?”
Left with no choice, the guards at the gate obliged them to be searched. My heart began to beat in suspense.
Just then, the chief security guard came.
“You are here? You should leave right now. Are you not aware that you are late and a lot of things need to be done by the morning?” He questioned.
Then, he turned to the security guards. “Let them go. Leave them alone. Time is fast spent” He ordered.
Immediately, the guards bowed and left the carriage allowing the other guards to leave.
I sighed in relief. If I had been caught, it would have been disastrous.
I sighed in relief as the carriage left. I heard the guards discuss.
Each of them talked about the number of maids that they had slept with, the maid they wished to settle down with, and others. I was disgusted.
“Yvette and I had a swell time yesternight.” One of the guards smiled. “I can't wait to have her tonight again. She is so good”
“Wait what? You and Yvette had se—”
“Yes,” He answered proudly like had done something commendable. I was irritated.
Yvette? That was the last thing I had expected to hear. Yvette always had an innocent look like she could not do anything.
I shook my head, trying to stay quiet as I was feeling uncomfortable where I was.
The guards didn’t make it easier as they moved slowly.
“If the King had not made a restriction by allowing just princes to contest for princess Gabrielle, I would have competed for her hand in marriage” The first guard smiled.
Wait, what? My ear widened as I heard my name being called. Anger welled up in me.
Was I now their topic of discussion?
“I would have also done the same thing. I know I would have won” The second boasted. “I wish I was given the chance. I would have taken good care of the princess. She is just so beautiful”
“If I had the opportunity to marry the princess, I will treat her with more love than the king had treated her.
She looks like she is love-starved. I wish I could give her love.
Much love that she deserves. A princess like her deserves a wonderful man like me”
“You?” The other scoffed. “You do not deserve the princess”
“And you also don’t. “
“Wake up from your slumber. The princess can never be for you. She would be getting married in a couple of days.
Even if everyone is given the opportunity, she can never choose you over me.”
The two guards began to argue and after a while, they kept mute.
Was my sadness that obvious that the guards knew I was not happy?
Finally, they stopped. It was already becoming morning as we had traveled for hours.
I sighed as I heard the carriage stop.
Finally, they have gotten to where they were to deliver.
As soon as the both of them went in to inspect the place, I sneaked out of the carriage and tries to run away. I covered myself with the blanket.
Then, I discovered it was the market. I ensured to cover myself so well that no one would suspect me as I walked quickly.
I tried to stay calm. I didn’t want to act suspicious. People had begun to display their wares. It was a brand new day. It was another opportunity to make more sales.
Chains and necklaces amongst others were being displayed. People had begun to negotiate. There were children everywhere playing. I wish I could be like them as well. Happy and free.
“Mama, when next is the princess coming?” I heard a child say. It was a little child of about four years old.
Why was she asking?
“Well, the princess would be coming to see us for the last time by tomorrow as she would also be getting married tomorrow” Her mother explained to her.
The little girl seemed sad.
“When she gets married, would she leave our kingdom?” My heart broke.
“Yes, she would” Her mother sighed. She seems unhappy too.
“I would miss her. Why does she have to leave? I do not want her to leave. I want to see her always” She whined as she placed her head on her mother’s chest.
She was sad. No one was happy. I was also not happy. Getting married when I didn’t want it.
I continued to walk away faster. People began to look at me with suspicion as I was covered.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed me. My heart began to race.
“Come and buy my ware” It was an old man. I wish I could but I did have any money on me.
Also, I could not afford the ring identified. I snatched my hand from him and continued walking.
My eyes were still on me. Again, another held me. I kept snatching my hands from them all. It was a regular habit.
They would hold anyone and beg them to buy from them.
Just then, a hand grabbed me. I tried to snatch my hands but he would not let go.
“You are beautiful. Tell me your name”
I hissed and tried to snatch my hand but his grip was stronger. “Tell me your name and I would let you go” He smiled. He was a young handsome man.
How the heck did he know it was beautiful?
Only my eyes were visible.
Just as I was struggling to snatch my hand, the blanket fell off, revealing my face.
He gasped in awe. My eyes widened in shock.
“The Princess!” The young girl initially looked at me with surprise and excitement.
Immediately, all eyes turned to me. Oh no.
