“Uniforms?”
I ask dumbly as the woman at the desk passes me a military uniform.
She gives me an up and down look and then looks back at the papers in front of her. Her look just now didn't betray anything and that makes things way worse. It's easier when you know what people think of you only by the way they look at you, but she's a tough one.
Nothing shows on her face.
“What did you expect?" she asks when she sees me frowning at the uniform." That you’ll be training in high heels and dresses?”
I begin to say something but drop it. She’s right. Besides, it’s not in my best interest to be playing a smart ass since day one. Although I didn't really think we'll be training from the first day. And she's right- I really thought the regime would be a bit more relaxed here, with all the spoiled rich kids around. But I keep my mouth shut.
Besides, she looks like a no joke big ass wolf.
That’s why I nod a silently
“Yes, madam,”
And take the folded clothes. Two pairs of uniforms and boots.
“You will need those only for the training sessions inside,” she explains, “you’ll have training sessions in the outskirts or around the canyon, but you’ll know more about those when the time comes. Any questions?”
I shake my head.
“Okay.”
She looks up and smiles. A damn unexpected chill runs down my spine for some reason.
Do all the theta wolves look that intimidating? From what I had heard, the ranks in the Academy were very strict. They actually followed all those rules.
We didn’t do that, probably because it didn’t really matter who was who, as long as we kept together and of course, chose the alpha fairly and they won their place in the right way.
As for the training and teaching ranks - we trained together. We didn’t have Epsilons to teach us. Sometimes the Betas did that, like for example Brandon's beta, Garrey was teaching us small pups this and that. We didn't have special trainers.
The reason- the best Epsilons were the best trainers and soldiers in the world. Especially the older ones. They were born to fight after all. In my tiny home in Arden, we didn’t have professional fighters. We just learned what we could the best way we could.
“Okay.”
I repeat.
“Now good luck. “ she says and peeks to see who is after me on the line for orientation day, “Next.”
I pick up my stuff, keeping my head low, get dressed and head towards the training hall.
The program said we’ll start with the training sessions first and then have classes. In a way, it’s better, rather than going to the class room right after you got up. I haven't ran in a few days, since I left for here, in fact.
Back home, I would go running every day in the woods.
But that was because my town was in the middle of trees with nothing much else surrounding it but the woods.
Here- the Academy is a huge concrete building with multiple floors, stairs and wings.
I got lost a few times but it was my stronger sense of smell that brought me back to my room.
It took half an hour, though, but let’s not dwell on this.
As soon as I enter the training hall, everyone turns to look at me.
All eyes, different colours are fixed On.Me.
The epsilon’s eyes, who I am assuming will be our trainer, are a deep, bright orange color and right now his - also- looking directly at me.
The epsilons are usually older from what I know, experienced an fought many battles before, but this guy can’t be over forty.
Middle height, but I can see the muscles shifting from under the plain black T-shirt he’s wearing.
We’re all dressed the same- military pattern pants and a plain T-shirt.
But it’s obvious who he is.
He doesn’t say anything and as I take a quick look around, I shift my weight from one foot to the other.
“Good morning.”
I greet and he growls. Hs voice is made of iron and I swear it got cold in the training hall the moment he opened his mouth.
“You are late.”
“Uh..." I glance at the clock, placed high on the wall opposite where i am standing, "No, I’m not.”
I say and I hear murmurs from all twenty students from my class.
Shit
I think
I guess he’s one of those “my word is the law” type of guys, but I will not just bow my head and agree to whatever he says. I am not late and I know it.
"The program said we start at seven?"
I ask and he exhales very slowly.
"We start at seven, which means you have to be here Before that. Do I need to explain punctuality to you, Miss..."
"Kaya. "
I say quickly and he lifts an eyebrow.
"I don't remember asking your name. "
I glance around again and see a few people snickering.
This is terrible, and I feel like sinking in the floor.
"I call everyone that," he says.
Okay, now I know he's totally make fun of me and my hand closes into a fist. I clench my jaw so hard because if I am not angry, I will start crying.
"Don't ever be late again."
He says. He also knows how I'm f*****g feeling because he is a grown up wolf, epsilon at that, and he can sense from miles away I am panicking.
What I hate most is pity, and this is exactly how some of my future new classmates are looking at me. My fists close even tighter and I nod.
"It won't happen again. "
He points to me where to stand when he announces, standing in front of all of us.
"We have training every two days. Once a week the training will be outside the Academy. The best ones are going to take part in the Chase. "
The Chase
I remember Miley was speaking about this. Okay, it's obviously going to be a big event, but I am not listening, since I'll not take part in this, most likely.
"The training for the Chase will be with our Actual team. "
Everyone starts whispering and cheering.
"I believe you know most of them?"
The Epsilon says and my classmates - every single one of them say "duuh"
I am th only one who doesn't say anything, I still don't see why this is such a big deal. The trainer glances at me and sees I am just standing there and smiles. Then he looks away and tells us all.
"So do your best to get in there. I am the chief commander trainer. Call me Greg. And whatever happens during training, you're reporting to me. You follow my orders. I have a Zeta, an assistant, but you'll meet him later during one of the following days. He's on a mission outside the campus. "
"On a mission?"
Someone asks and Gregory explains.
"We're still soldiers. We don't only stay and teach in the campus. "
Damn, I think, Are we in the army or what?
But I don't have much time to dwell on questions in my head, because the Epsilon- this Greg guy announces
"Now. I think we're done with the orientation and introductions. I don't ask about names, because I don't remember them, unless you did something you should not have done. Or unless you're on The Chase team and you make the Academy the place it is."
I want to roll my eyes and myself into another dimension. What are those on the team, some gods or what? I haven't even met them, and everyone is their fan- even Miley back home, while they sound more like some country legend.
Greg spins on his heel and takes a step back.
" As I said- I think we're done with the introductions."
Then he turns again towards me and says. " You were late, Kaya. So I suggest we start the fight with you. Come out here and shows what you know. "
The door opens and we all turn to look at it.
What
what
what
My heart speeds because the guy who comes in is someone I've seen before.
Oh, no...
The rest of my classmates start cheering and the guy comes in.
"Ah, right on time," Greg says, " I was just telling the newcomers what's coming for them. Kaya, come here, your training partner for today just came in. "
And I want to make a step forward, but the only thing I want to do is run away.
It's him, there's no mistake in it. After all, I have seen so many pictures of him on my best friend's phone.
