POV: Roxana "Magnus," I said again, my heart hammering so hard I was certain he could hear it. "What were you doing down there?" He studied my face for a long moment before answering, his expression giving away nothing. "I went to speak with the witch," he said simply. "Alone. Without you standing between us this time." The floor seemed to tilt slightly beneath my feet. "You went to see her without telling me?" I asked, forcing my voice to stay steady even as panic clawed up my throat. "Why would you do that?" "Because I wanted the truth," Magnus said, stepping closer. "And I did not think I would get it from you." "What did she tell you?" I asked, hating how quickly the question left my mouth, how desperate it sounded even to my own ears. "Nothing," Magnus said, watching my reaction
