Chapter 7: The Broken Lock

POV: Roxana The door made a loud noise as Jaxon shut it. I ran to the door and pulled the handle, but it did not move. Jaxon laughed loud from the other side of the wall. "You are trapped now, Roxana," Jaxon shouted through the small grate. "Now everyone will know you are working with a bad witch." His footsteps made a tapping sound as he walked away. I turned around and looked at Hestia. She glared at me with angry eyes and spat on the dirty floor. Her chains made a loud clinking sound as she moved. "You got what you wanted, Luna," Hestia said in a mean voice. "You sold me to the guards, and now you are trapped here with me." She leaned her head against the cold wall. "I already told you before, I did not tell the guards about you," I said to her. "I came here to help you get out of this place. We have to work together if we want to live." Hestia laughed, but she did not sound happy at all. "I do not believe you, Roxana," she said with a shake of her head. "You only care about your shiny new crown and your life." "If I wanted you dead, I would not be down here," I told her. "Jaxon followed my steps because he wants to destroy me. We are both in big danger now if we do not stop him." Hestia closed her eyes and did not answer me. The dungeon was very cold. I hugged my arms close to my body to stay warm. Suddenly, we heard a loud scream from the stairs outside our room. It was Jaxon, and he sounded very scared. The dungeon door went open, and a huge shadow fell over the doorway. Magnus walked into the room with his big black boots. He held Jaxon by his shirt collar with one hand. Jaxon’s face was white, and he was shaking like a leaf. "You think you can play games in my house?" Magnus asked Jaxon. He threw Jaxon onto the ground with a lot of force. Jaxon hit the floor and let out a sharp cry of pain. He looked up at Magnus with big, scared eyes. "Father, she is a traitor," Jaxon cried out, pointing at me. "She was talking to the witch in the dark," Jaxon said. "I locked her in to save our pack from her bad magic." He tried to stand up, but his knees were too weak. Magnus did not look at me or Hestia. He stepped forward and placed his boot on Jaxon's chest. He pushed down hard, making Jaxon gasp for air. "I told you before, Jaxon," Magnus growled in a very low voice. "Roxana is your supreme Luna, and she can go anywhere she wants. You have no power over her." Jaxon began to cry as the boot pressed into his ribs. "I am sorry, Father," Jaxon squeaked out. "Please do not hurt me." He held his hands up to beg. Magnus kicked him away toward the two guards in the hallway. "Take him to the prisoners' cells," Magnus told the guards. "Lock him up until tomorrow morning so he learns his lesson." The guards grabbed Jaxon by his arms and dragged him up the stairs. Jaxon did not fight back at all. The dungeon became very quiet again, except for the wind. Magnus turned his dark eyes toward me and walked closer. He was very tall, and his body was broad and strong. He stopped right in front of me and looked down. "Why are you down here, Roxana?" Magnus asked me. His voice was cold and did not have any warmth. He did not look happy to see me in this place. I kept my back straight and looked right into his eyes. "The Seer said I have ninety days to live," I told him. "I came to find a medicine to help me get pregnant." I did not want him to know the witch was my friend. "I want to give you a male heir quickly," I said. "I thought this witch could help us make that happen." Magnus stared at me for a long time without saying a word. He reached out and grabbed my chin with his rough fingers. He forced me to look up at his scarred face. “My blood is strong, and we do not use witches here." He let go of my chin and took my hand. His grip was very tight, but he did not hurt me. He pulled me out of the cellblock and up the stairs. Hestia just watched us with quiet eyes, as she didn't even utter a word. We walked through the long halls of the big royal mansion. The servants saw us and quickly knelt on the floor. I kept my head high and did not look at them. Magnus led me into my large bedroom and shut the door. He turned the key in the lock with a loud click. The room was warm because of the bright fire. He took off his black coat and threw it on a chair. His big chest had many white lines from old sword fights. He walked toward the large bed in the center. "Your enemies are waiting for you to fail, Roxana," Magnus said. "They want to see your head on the block in ninety days." He stopped right in front of me again. "I am not afraid of them," I said to him. I put my small hands on his warm chest and looked up. "I will do my duty and give you your son." Magnus did not speak, but he grabbed my waist with his strong hands. He pulled me close to his body and kissed me hard. The clock on the wall made a sound for midnight. "You must be careful with what you eat," Magnus said to me. He looked down at my face with a very serious look. "Victoria and Celeste are not your friends." "I know they want to hurt me," I told him. "But I am smarter than they think I am." I kept my voice soft as I spoke to him. Magnus let out a low sound that sounded like a growl. "Before you eat any food," he said. "Make sure my personal guard has checked and tasted everything first." "Okay, Alpha," I whispered, leaning my head against his chest. " But I need your permission to meet my witch friend, that's the only way I am going to survive this." I felt his big heart beating fast. "You have my permission, but that's because of our contract," Magnus said coldly. "But you must also do your part of the deal." He lifted my chin up again. "I will," I promised him, looking into his dark eyes. "I will give you the son you need for your throne." I did not let my voice shake at all. He pushed me back onto the soft mattress of the large bed. He climbed onto the bed next to me. The room felt very safe with him there. But I knew the safety would not last after the sun came up. The wives would be waiting for me at the breakfast table. They would want to see me fail and die.I had to find a way to get Hestia out of the dungeon. She was the only one who could truly help me with her magic. If she stayed down there, she would surely die. And before Hestia dies, she might tell everyone my secrets. And if such happens, even the alpha won't be able to help me, even though he gave me permission to speak with her. And that would be the end of my life and my crown. I had to think of a plan very quickly. Magnus held me tight in his arms as the night went on. He was a hard man, but his body felt like a shield. I fell asleep listening to the sound of his breathing. ****** In my dreams, I saw the executioner's big silver blade. It was shiny and sharp, and it was coming down fast. I woke up with a start as the first light hit the window. The bed next to me was empty and the sheets were cold. Magnus was already gone to do his duties as the Alpha. I was all alone in the giant room. I sat up and looked at the crown on the table. It looked very beautiful in the morning light, but I had eighty-eight days left, and the clock was ticking.
