The silence in the office was loud. The sound of car horns and the busy road faded into a dull, distant hum, leaving only the sharp tick of the wall clock.
The air seemed thick as Flynn and Alaric wrestled various thoughts in each of their minds.
“What are you planning to do now?” Flynn finally breaks the silence, his voice echoing in the air.
“I don’t know.” Alaric sighs, “But one thing is sure, I need her close to me.”
“You can’t be serious right now,” Flynn said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that seemed to echo in the stifling room. “She’s human! How do you plan to explain to the entire pack that their Alpha has a human mate?”
“I can already see how this will go, and it’s not good, trust me,” he added.
“They will have no choice but to accept her. At the end of the day, she’s still my mate and the future Luna of the pack,” Alaric rebutted fiercely.
“You know, sometimes I wonder if you’re thinking straight,” Flynn retorted, taking a few steps towards Alaric.
“You really think your parents will accept a human mate? Even if they do, you think they could go against the entire pack elders?”
“They have to,” Alaric whispered, his voice low and confused as he battled the thoughts in his head.
“Oh— did you forget about Bianca? What will you say to her? And her family?”
Flynn sighed heavily, “Bianca is going to lose her mind.”
Alaric’s expression darkened, “I never promised her anything.” He rebutted.
“Maybe not you, but everyone else did.”
“The pack.”
“The elders.”
“Your parents.”
“And you didn’t exactly say no either,” Flynn shook his head.
“Well, that’s clearly not my problem.”
“It becomes your problem when her father starts asking questions.”
Alaric’s eyes narrowed.
“I don’t care what he thinks.”
“That’s because you’re not imagining the political disaster yet. This could escalate way more than we can imagine. He even has shares in this company. Did you forget that?” Flynn exclaimed, agitated.
“Look, I understand. But there’s hardly anything I can do,” Alaric protested.
“You don’t understand,” Flynn said, dragging a hand through his hair.
“No. You don’t understand.” Alaric’s voice hardened.
“Then explain it to me,” Flynn laughed humorlessly.
“Fine. Let’s say the elders somehow miraculously accepted her. Let’s say Bianca doesn’t lose her mind. Let’s say your parents don’t object. What happens when Selene finds out?”
Alaric fell silent.
“Exactly,” Flynn continued. “She’s human. She doesn’t know about wolves. She knows nothing about packs. She doesn’t know about mates. She’ll think you’ve lost your mind. Worse, you may even scare her away.”
A muscle ticked in Alaric’s jaw.
“She deserves the truth.”
“Yeah, maybe,” Flynn folded his arms. “But definitely not today.”
“And why not?”
“Because you met her just a few minutes ago.”
Alaric glared at him.
Flynn raised both hands, “What? Am I wrong? You don’t even know anything about her.”
“I know she’s my mate.” Alaric shrugged.
“That’s not enough.”
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Then Alaric quietly said,
“It’s enough for me.”
Flynn stared at him for a long moment before shaking his head.
“You’re unbelievable.”
“That’s at the bottom of the list of names I’ve been called.”
“Oh, I know,” Flynn pointed at him. “Arrogant. Stubborn, Annoyingly dramatic, I could go on.”
Alaric raised an eyebrow at him.
“Dramatic?”
“You fired someone for spilling coffee on a piece of paper.”
“She was clumsy, she wouldn’t have lasted long anyway,” Alaric protested.
“Thanks for proving my point,” Flynn scoffed.
For the first time since entering the office, the tension eased slightly.
Alaric strode to his massive, ink-black executive table, settling into his swivel chair, he opened the file in front of him.
His eyes immediately moved to the name printed across the tab.
SELENE HART
He gently ran his fingers over her passport and the name printed on the paper.
His mate.
His human mate.
“Oh, this is bad,” Flynn groaned dramatically, noticing the way Alaric’s gaze softened.
Alaric’s face scrunched up in annoyance, “What now?”
“That look.”
“What look?”
“The look all men have when facing something I would consider a weakness.”
Alaric ignored him and opened the file.
The first page contained basic information.
Name: Selene Hart.
Age: Twenty-five.
Position: Junior Marketing Manager.
Emergency Contact: Hattie Hart.
His eyes lingered on the last line.
Emergency contact.
His wolf stirred, the reaction surprising him. He barely knew this woman, he had exchanged exactly zero words with her.
Yet his instincts already wanted to know whether she was happy, safe, protected, cared for.
His Mate.
The words echoed through him.
Alaric turned the page and began reviewing Selene’s employee records. The file contained everything from attendance reports to performance evaluations, and the further he read, the deeper his frown became.
“What’s wrong?” Flynn asked.
“Nothing.”
“That’s not what your face says.”
Ignoring him, Alaric continued reading.
Every review said the exact same thing. Selene consistently delivered excellent results, exceeding all expectations and had received repeated recommendations for promotion from multiple supervisors over the years.
Yet somehow she still remained Junior Manager. That didn’t make sense.
Leaning back in his chair, Alaric looked up from the file, “Who oversees the Marketing Department in this branch?”
“Harris Tucker, why?”
“Interesting.”
Without another word, Alaric slid several reports across the desk.
Flynn skimmed through them, his expression gradually changing from curiosity to disbelief.
“Okay, now that’s strange.”
“Exactly. She should’ve been promoted a long time ago, or had her salary increased at least.”
Flynn glanced at the file and let out a low whistle.
“They’ve been underpaying her.”
The observation irritated Alaric far more than he expected.
Selene was one of the strongest employees in the department, according to the reports. Yet the recognition and rewards she deserved never seemed to get to her.
This discovery made Alaric more certain of the plan he was already cooking up.
“Okay, what now,” Flynn sighed.
“I’m moving her up here!” Alaric muttered, a glazed look in his eyes.
“Oh for goodness’ sake!” Flynn exclaimed.
“Selene Hart will now officially become my personal assistant.”
