Meeting Maya

It had been almost a week since my encounter with the mysterious combat teacher. Although I’d said I wouldn’t be distracted, I definitely made sure that during some of my early morning sprints, I had made sure I would end up around the training grounds although I never saw him. Beta Brett on the other hand, well, now that is burning slowly. I occasionally see him around campus and it sort of feels like he’s purposely trying to be seen by me but also purposely avoiding me. I guess he’s got his work cut out with all the new students. He must know how good looking he is, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he flirts with all the students. I suppose for your average human, not much progress would be made within a week, but we are not human. I was definitely stronger and faster although there was still a lot of progress to be made. The campus was a hive of activity this morning. There was an influx of new and older students returning to their dorms, full of stories of summer. I sat by the fountain watching a steady slew of students turn up, greeting their old friends or looking extremely nervous about what was to come. I felt incredibly fortunate that I was able to process those emotions without anybody around me having to see them. I only cried once because I’d missed home and I’d only missed home because the cafeteria served up a dish my mum would always make for us. It was a moment of madness okay?!. As I sat basking in the sunshine, reading my fourteenth book on the art of surprise attacks, a very flustered girl came and sat beside me. “Hey girl, you mind if I sit here and smoke a minute before I cry?” she asked me whilst sparking up her cigarette, so I guess she was asking out of politeness instead of anything else. I shook my head and looked at how her hands were shaking. “No, not at all, erm, are you new here? You okay?” I closed my book because, based on her reaction to my question, we were either going to get full on waterworks or I was going to awkwardly make my excuses and go elsewhere. She gave a half smile and said “This is my first time away from home and that complete b***h over there..” she gestured towards the enrolment tent, “.. well she’s refusing to house me close to my brother. I explained it would help with my anxiety and she said, and I quote, ‘No special treatment”. I won’t lie, I had no idea why she wanted special treatment, but after back and forth, it looked as though she was going to be in a room quite close to mine. I liked how effortlessly pretty she was. She was incredibly confident with the way she articulated herself but had this nervous demeanour. It was strange to me that she wanted to be near to her brother because my mum always brought me up to not need any man. I offered to walk her to her room to distract her from any of that. It was bugging me so I decided to just dive in and say what I was thinking, “So what is the deal with your brother? Are you guys really close?”. I was leading the way so I wasn’t able to see her face and, thankfully, she couldn’t see mine. “Oh! Ya. So. Like, basically, my brother has just been promoted to be the Beta of this pack and will be the Beta for the next Alpha when Alpha Lucien steps down. I haven’t really done much without our family due to safety concerns, but my parents were adamant that if I wanted to come here, I would have to stay close to him” she said a little out of breath, “Girl sloooow downnn. We aren’t in a rush!” she called ahead. Thank god she couldn’t see my face. Of course she was Beta Brett’s little sister. I didn’t particularly fancy sharing that I’d already met him and we'd been eye banging for the last two weeks, but regardless of who her family were, I really liked her and the vibes she was giving off. I stopped and turned to her “Listen, you could take this as your opportunity to carve out who you want to be because, like they said, no special treatment. What are they going to do? Drag you out of school?” I grinned at her. “Wait. Like. Omg. I can literally do what I want without having to ask permission. I don’t even have to wear this f*cking sweatshirt” she squealed, ripping it off to reveal a crop vest which looked really cute with her pleated skirt. I gave her a lame high five and we got to her dorm door. Weirdly, it was already open so we both slowly opened the door to make sure we’d got the right place. Brett was stood by the window looking out towards the courtyard. He didn’t bother to turn around, but he said “Well, mom definitely isn’t going to be happy you’re here by yourself, but maybe you can show her just how tough you can be, little Sis”. He turned round to give her a reassuring smile but it soon turned to confusion upon seeing me stood in the room. “Erm. Hi?” He said looking at me. “Pardon the intrusion, I was just helping…” I stopped because I hadn’t even asked for her name. Who even am I! I turned to her but Brett kindly interrupted with “Maya”. I looked back at him and said “Yes, thank you, I was just helping Maya to her room”. I could feel a strange tension and Brett was trying to look at everything in the room except me. I couldn’t be bothered with the weird games so I turned to Maya saying “well, it was really nice meeting you and I’m only two doors down so I’m always here if you need a friend”. I made sure I said it loud enough so that Beta Brett heard there was zero weirdness on my part. She gave me a cuddle and I went to my room. I sunk down on my bed, deep in thought. How do I get myself into these situations? If he didn’t want to flirt, then he could have rebuffed our encounters and why is it always him that seems to seek me out but then not talk to me? I replayed the encounters several times before catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I stood looking at myself for a moment, then spoke to myself out loud “This is not the time to be thinking about that douche. You have your first classes tomorrow and you need to sort your life out”. I nodded and agreed with myself, which seemed to cement the determined ideology. I grabbed my bag and made sure all my books were present and accounted for. I picked out a really pretty baby blue dress that had tiny daisies all over it and I was planning on pairing it with a pair of trainers to keep it casual. I also had my first defence class so I packed a separate gym bag with some sports leggings that really hugged my ass. ‘Aha,’ I thought, ‘All eyes on that ass is fine by me’. I lay back on my bed with my little planner. I liked to sit down and plan my day, with a little to-do list that I could refer back to. I was pretty organised most of the time and once I’d made the list, I’d usually memorise it and not have to refer back to it. It just felt good to write it down more than anything. o Laundry o Lunch at 1pm o Go for a swim or run – look for hottie? I was wracking my brain on how to fill the day when I heard a gentle knock at the door. I smiled to myself, thinking that Maya had only been left to her own devices for less than an hour and she was already knocking. I had only opened the door half way before Brett walked in. “So just come on in then?” I furrowed my brow but tried to smile at the same time to try and look less annoyed. I noticed how his skin glistened with a slight sweat that normally would be gross, but he really knew how to work that. “Is everything okay?” I asked, inquisitively. He’d never actually been in my room before and he’d never actively sought me out in this way. He looked a little uncomfortable as he looked around the room, seeing it all for the first time. Forgetting that this was my room, I just stood by the door waiting. Still waiting. “So are you going to say something or am I supposed to know why you’re here?” I had spoken impatiently but I think that waiting for him to open his mouth was like waiting for Christmas. Finally, he sat down on the edge of my bed, “I’m pretty sure you know why I’m here”.
