I glanced down at my watch, realised firstly that my heart was twice its usual beats per minute and also the time! It would be lunch soon and they would be serving food in the cafeteria. I’d not eaten the night before and was ravenous. I followed my nose and soon sat down with a huge plate of dauphinoise potatoes, steak and broccoli.
Mid-meal, I sat thinking about what happened earlier that day. I hated the feeling of being bested by someone and couldn’t help but think about how embarrassing it would have been if it was in front of an entire class. As I slowly chewed my food, I formulated a little plan in my head. I’d head straight to the library from here and I would spend however long it took to learn every strategy, every block. I would train every day and get strong so that nobody would put me on my ass again.
I finished up my plate and felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I turned around to cast my eyes over the few randomly spaced out people quietly eating their meals. On the other side of the dining room, just standing at the door, was Beta Brett. He sent a little wink my way. I pretended to catch it mid air, grinned and mouthed the words “are you following me?”. He laughed a little, pretended to be shocked and walked off. I couldn’t be distracted by what could possibly be the most ill-advised relationship in the history of the pack. He was probably just kidding around anyway, I told myself.
I walked back to my room, via the library. I headed straight to the section dedicated to physical education. I found a few books which I felt would be a great place to start. I hauled them back to my room, pulled out my planner and set about making a work-out plan. I knew I needed to work on my strength and core. Coming from a wolf-pack, obviously there is a lot of running involved, so physical activity is something everybody gets involved in from a young age. I was always a fantastic runner and would go for a run nearly every day. However, as a 17-year-old girl, I had no testosterone and my muscles were pretty much non-existent.
After I'd put together a work-out schedule, I headed straight to the gym to look at the equipment. Another benefit of being here whilst most students are on holiday is that I could work out how to use everything without looking like a simpleton. I grabbed a set of dumbbells and set about putting my plan into action. After an hour and a half, my entire body was screaming for me to stop. I had to remind myself that this would take time, but my impatient self wanted results immediately.
For the first time, I thought about home. I thought about how it would be time for my little brother to have his dinner. Mum would be losing her mind over the fact that he wouldn't eat what she had prepared, he'd be asking for chicken nuggets and my dad would be the one that would give in.
I figured I would go and relax in the sauna before dinner because if I didn't get some more heat to these muscles, I would be useless tomorrow. I wrapped my towel round me, opened the dark, steamy sauna and poured a ladle of water over the hot stones. Immediately, I felt like this was the best idea in the world. I closed my eyes and let the sweat drip from every pore.
I felt a rush of cool air as the door opened. I inquisitely opened one eye to see my mysterious teacher. He raised an eyebrow, nodded at me and sat down. I wasn't sure if he remembered me or was just being rude but I was too tired to care. I lay back and closed my eyes. "Good workout?" he said quietly. I had to check that the room was in fact empty and he was talking to me. "Uh, yeah actually, sorry were you working out too?" I said, unsure as to whether he was just being polite or that he actually wanted to speak to me. I couldn't help but gawp a little as the towel wrapped round his waist drew my attention to his huge muscles. His huge muscles paired with the hugest bruise I'd ever seen. "What the hell happened?! Are you okay?" I squealed.
He looked down, realizing the bruise on his abdomen and said "Oh, yeah, that is nothing. You should see the other guy. It will be healed within an hour." He stretched out, opening up his back muscles. He was even wider and I'd be surprised if he could walk through a door like that. "Have you been working on your left hook?", he said with his eyes now closed.
"Not really, I've just been doing some weight training to try and build strength before I tackle that again." I felt a little inadequate, in terms of strength, next to this goliath man. "Maybe you could give me some pointers when I'm ready". To be honest, I'm not sure why I said it because I knew that I wouldn't want him to give me a lesson in anything because I just felt like I made a complete ass of myself both the times I've been in his presence. "Hm." He retorted. He gave absolutely nothing away.
Right. Last chance to make conversation and I'm leaving, I thought to myself.
"So, care to share why you are the deepest shade of purple I've ever seen?". He sighed, sat upright, turned to me and crossed his arms. Was I about to get scolded or something? "So when you complete your training here, your wolf is fully formed and you have trained under the Beta, the most exceptional wolves get to train with the Alpha. That training never really stops. That is what I was doing". He remained cross-armed and expressionless. I, on the other hand, was in awe. "Training with the Alpha? What is he like? Is it true you have to do everything he says? How do you have time to teach AND work with the Alpha?"
"That... Is a lot of questions. Hard work. Hard work. Not always and hard work" he returned to his relaxed position. It was clear that the conversation was almost over. As I stood to leave, he reached out to open the door for me. "Yes, by the way." I looked at his brooding face and chiseled features. "Yes I'll give you some pointers. When you're ready, that is". I gave him a smile, trying to maintain eye contact. For once, he reciprocated and looked at me for a few moments before nodding his head towards the door, almost dismissing me.
I walked towards the changing room, glanced back to see his shadowy figure still stood there, watching me leave. Weird.
