Chapter 6 - The Pool

1560 Words
Kylara was floating on a raft in the center of the pool, while Malcolm swam laps. His strong back muscles flexed with each powerful stroke through the water. “Mmm…” Kylara took a sip from the Mai Tai that Malcolm had brought her, one finger trailing through the cool, but not cold, water leaving trails of ripples in its wake. “This is delish, darling,” she said when he stopped for a moment, treading water next to her. “May I get you another?” “Yes, please,” she purred. Malcolm swam to the edge of the pool, dunking himself briefly before effortlessly pulling himself up and over the edge. Kylara watched him rub the water out of his short blond hair. His muscles bulging with each movement. That body was what had first attracted her teenage self. He was so strong and confident. Their pairing had felt like a mate-bond, until their true mates had shown up to ruin everything. Malcolm had been able to privately reject his insipid little Omega mate… but Kylara had been stuck with the Alpha, who publicly called her over to him once he felt the bond. Her stupid little wolf had taken over and trotted over to him like a puppy, besotted. Kylara had thought that maybe she could have her cake and eat it too… the riches and power of being Luna, while her true lover served her and only her, on the side, as the Beta of the pack. Paxi, her wolf, would take over when Kylara was sleeping and make love to Alex, which is how she ended up pregnant with the little brat that called her mother. It was all fine, until it wasn’t. Alex had begun demanding more and more of her as a Luna and a mother. The kid got bigger and wanted her time too. She was done and wanted out. She had drugged Paxi with wolfsbane regularly so that she and Malcolm could make plans to kill the old former Alpha F*ckhead and his Luna B*tch. Then the plan was to take out Alex while he was grieving... and then the brat once all of his protectors were gone. That would have freed her up to be with Malcolm even as he he became the new Alpha. Too bad that old geezer F*ckhead had a chance to link his Alpha son before he keeled over. When Alex came gunning for her, she had underestimated how weak she would be without her wolf who, though stunned with wolfsbane in the moment, had refused to surface once things got real. Alex had captured and imprisoned her. D*mn, she should have taken him out first. Malcolm had stayed true to her though. No one knew of their love nor that he had been complicit in her plans. He worked for two years to put all of the pieces of their escape together, all the while pretending to be the perfect Beta. The dark witch, the rich and famous donor body, and bank account that went along with it, had all been engineered by her lover. The Moon Goddess should have paired them from the start. Selena, the Moon Goddess was the real b*tch in all of this. Kylara cursed her under her breath. It was all her fault. But now things were perfect, she thought. Until, as she lay there soaking in the sun, a shadow fell across her body. She squinted at the offending silhouette standing, uncomfortably, in a suit by the side of the pool. “Hey, Mister, you’re in my light,” she said snidely. “You, young missy, are in a great deal of trouble,” said the shadow. Kylara put a hand to her forehead to block the sun from her eyes, looking up at the unfamiliar face. “And why is that?” she asked. If the man had known Kylara, he might have been frightened by her tone. But he merely put his hands on his hips and said, “Richard sent me to get you. You may have decided to postpone your education, but you still have other obligations, Carmel. Come on, get out of the pool. Your little vacation is over.” While the man was talking, Malcolm had come up behind him. He had certainly heard the entire exchange with his wolfs keen ears. Putting the drinks down on a poolside table, he walked up to the man and put a hand on his shoulder. “And who is this, my pet,” Malcolm asked as he turned the man to face him. “Apparently,” the man said a little nervously now as he looked up at the huge man who was questioning him, “I am now her babysitter.” Malcolm stepped in closer to the man, bumping his chest up against the human. “She’s taking a break,” he said forcefully. Then man in the suit stepped back and straightened his tie. “She missing appointments.” He said to Malcolm. “She may have decided to delay school for the time being, but her board responsibilities still remain.” He turned back to Kylara, “Carmel, we are allocating money to several charities tomorrow. You are required to be at that meeting. You also have a fitting with your stylist and the designer for your gown for the Met Gala on Wednesday and a celebrity news conference for the Special Olympics on Thursday.” Kylara’s eyes were glowing greedily with the news of these prestigious events. She looked at Malcolm and nodded, their signal for him to stand down, now that she was not able to link with him. “You also took the foundations private jet without clearing it through Richard,” the man continued in an admonishing way. “He is quite put out. I have told the pilot to schedule our take off for this evening. That should give you the rest of the day to finish this impulsive mini-vacation of yours and get yourself back on track. I will accompany you back to New York.” Kylara tried to look contrite and sweetly told the man, in what she hoped was an innocent sounding voice, “I’ve just been so stressed out.” She summoned up a tear or two, trying to look overwhelmed. “I’ve completely blanked out on my schedule. I think… I think… I may need an assistant to manage my schedule until I can get my head together.”     The man looked confused for a moment. Obviously, this was out of character for Carmel. Kylara mentally shrugged. This was the “new Carmel” and they had better get used to it… or he might just have an “unfortunately accident” if he proved problematic. “Okay,” he finally agreed. “I will have Madeline arrange it. Oh, and answer your d*mn phone next time instead of making me take a commercial flight to find you. And I don’t know who this new boyfriend of yours is,” he said indicating Malcolm, “but Richard will want all of his information for the background check.” The man bowed slightly and turned to make his departure. “I will be in the bar until it’s time to go to the airfield. Let me know when you are packed and I will arrange a car,” he said over his shoulder. Kylara slid off of the raft and did a gentle breast stroke over to the side of the pool. She reached her hand up, wiggling her fingers as she waited for her love to bring her the Mai Tai. He slid the plastic glass into her hand and sat on the edge of the pool, legs in the water. She settled herself in between his legs, her arms draped over his thighs, as she took a big sip through the straw. “I wonder who the hell he is?” she said thoughtfully to Malcolm. “Well, let’s find out, love. Shall we?” he said as he reached around behind his back and pull something out from under the elastic band of his swim trunks. “What is that?” she asked curiously. “I lifted his wallet off of him.” He said pulling the man’s identification out of the wallet. “Douglas Bradbury, it says. Hmmm… that doesn’t ring a bell. Come on. Bring your drink. We need to go google this guy before we are stuck on an airplane with him.” “Ohhh Malcolm!” she said, forgetting about the man, “we get to go to the Met Gala! Imagine! Fashion fittings for designer dresses, stylists, press conferences... this is the person that I was always meant to be!” He looked at her for a moment, tucking a finger under her chin and raising it up so he could look directly in her eyes. “Love, don't you miss your wolf at all? Do you miss the power, strength and speed of being a werewolf?” “Paxi?” she scoffed. “That little missy prissy would have me bound to a life of servitude if she had her way. No, Malcolm, I don’t miss her. You are the only the wolf I need.” He leaned down then and kissed her passionately.
