chapter two

780 Words
After I leave madam G's office and head to my car, the sound of my phone buzzing with a message makes me stop abruptly to look at my phone. "s**t!" I exclaim to myself after noticing that I've missed several missed calls from Kassie's doctor. I dial his number frantically, my stomach twisting after every unanswered ring "Please, pick up…." I muttered repeatedly as my heart paced. "Hello" His voice and the hospital background noise fills my ear. "Dr. Raymond. Is everything okay?" I asked instantly. "Khloe, you must get to the hospital right away. It's your sister, Kassie. She is refusing the clinical trial," he informs me. "What!" I exclaimed "But I just sold my virginity" "Excuse me?" He asked, confused. "Did you just say you sold your virginity?" "No!" I lied, "I said that's insanity." "I know." He sighed in relief, "Maybe you can talk some sense into her. I've tried but she refuses to listen" "I'm on my way. Thank you, doctor Raymond." I got into my car and drove at an insane speed until I got to the hospital. My mind is restless. I wondered why Kassie would refuse to not move on with the clinical trials. I parked my car in a hurry and ran to the hospital. Maggie, the receptionist was at her desk but I was in a hurry and I didn't bother to spare her any greeting, like I have been doing everytime I come here. I race to Kassie's room and enter to see her with folded arms over her chest. After she notices me she turns her face towards the window and avoids my eyes. She is wearing her satin pajamas and her favorite brown beanie. I had gifted it to her after she was diagnosed. "Kassie. Doctor Raymond called me, you need to do this trial." I said in a calm tone. "I'm not doing it. You can't afford it, we can't afford it!" She exclaimed, bursting into tears. "Oh, Kassie." I walked closer to her bed and sat beside her "I'm not changing my mind, Khloe." She sniffles. "This treatment could save you, Kassie. We have to give it a try. I ... I don't want to lose you. You are the only family I have left" I say as tears run down my cheeks. "No. I'm tired of being a burden." Dr. Raymond told me the treatment is going to cost one hundred thousand dollars out of pocket. We don't have that type of money, Khloe" tears fall uncontrollably from her cheeks. "Kassie, it's fine." I want to give her more reassurance than this. And I also want to shield her from the decisions I made to acquire the money we need. "You shouldn't have to deal with this" she continues crying "You're not even my real sister" she says, without looking in my direction. My fists clench, "Kassie, don't ever say that again!" I chide. "You became my family the minute mom and dad adopted me from that orphanage" I reply in a calm tone, as I try to hold back the tears. Kassie begins to cry profusely "I'm sorry, Khloe. I'll do the trial, but only on one condition? " "What is the condition, Kassie?" I ask. "You have to tell me how we are going to afford the money for the trial, Khloe" I hate lying to my sister. But I don't want her to regret my actions for me or worse, blame herself for my decisions. "Kassie, I'm working on how to get the money," I lied. "That's not good enough. If I start the trial and the money isn't available, we'll be in worse trouble than before." "That's not true." I try to snap her out of the negative thought she is harboring towards the trial. "I'm confident that the money will be available." "How?" "Because I'm taking out a second mortgage on the house." I lied again. "The rates are good. We'll definitely get approved" lies seem to be coming very easily to me lately. I feel terrible lying to Kassie but this is our only hope. She doesn't realize how bad things are for us. I clasp Kassie's hands and look into her eyes "I promise, if the money doesn't come through, we can stop the trial." The money will be available, I'll do whatever it takes to get it. But Kassie doesn't have to know that. "Okay, I'll do it" she smiles and hugs me. I smile softly and hug her back. "I don't want you to worry about anything but getting better. I'll worry about everything else." I assure her. Like marrying Alexander Wilson and having his child.
