WHITE SECRET

1332 Words
The iron gates of Adrian Cole's mansion creaked open as his black sedan rolled slowly into the compound. For the first time in years, there were no security guards rushing to greet him, no smiling housekeepers waiting by the entrance, and no patients sending flowers to thank him for saving their loved ones. The house stood in complete silence. It felt... abandoned. Adrian remained seated in the car for a long moment, staring at the magnificent three-story mansion that had once symbolized everything he had worked for. Every brick, every pillar, every carefully trimmed flower garden had been built through years of sleepless nights, successful surgeries, and unwavering dedication. Now all he could see was loneliness. His driver, Michael, should have been alive to park the car. Instead, Michael was buried beneath the earth because of an accident Adrian still couldn't remember. His chest tightened. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I should have been the one who died." He picked up the cardboard box containing the last remnants of his career and stepped out of the vehicle. The afternoon breeze carried an eerie silence across the compound. Even the birds seemed unwilling to sing. As Adrian reached the front door, he noticed something unusual. The lock wasn't damaged... But it wasn't fully closed either. His heart skipped. "I locked this house before leaving for work." Slowly, he pushed the door open. The living room looked normal at first glance. The expensive furniture remained untouched. The giant television still hung on the wall. Family portraits still decorated the shelves. Nothing appeared stolen. Yet... Something didn't feel right. Doctors developed sharp observation skills after years of noticing the smallest changes in patients. That same instinct told Adrian someone had entered his home. He carefully placed the box on the floor. "Who's there?" Silence. No answer. He walked cautiously into the sitting room. The air smelled different. Not like dust. Not like perfume. It smelled faintly of cigarette smoke. Adrian frowned. He never allowed smoking inside his home. His pulse quickened. He moved toward the kitchen. Everything remained perfectly arranged. The refrigerator. The cupboards. The dining table. Nothing had been touched. Then he climbed the staircase. Each step echoed loudly inside the empty mansion. He stopped outside his bedroom. The door stood slightly open. He distinctly remembered closing it before leaving for work the night of the accident. Taking a deep breath, Adrian pushed it open. His bedroom looked neat. Too neat. His expensive watches remained inside their glass cabinet. His laptop still sat on the desk. His suits hung perfectly inside the wardrobe. No thief would ignore valuables like these. This wasn't robbery. Someone had been looking for something else. He opened his wardrobe. His clothes had been rearranged. One of his drawers refused to close properly. He pulled it open. Several files had been moved from their usual position. His passport was missing. Then he remembered... Detective David had confiscated it. He sighed. "Think, Adrian." He searched carefully. Nothing. No clue. He walked toward his private study. The moment he entered, he froze. Books littered the floor. One shelf stood completely empty. His office chair had been pushed away from the desk. The safe behind the painting remained open. He hurried toward it. Cash. Jewelry. Property documents. Everything remained inside. Whoever had entered... Hadn't wanted money. They had wanted information. His breathing became uneven. "What were they searching for?" He looked around the room again. A strange feeling settled deep inside him. Had he hidden something here before the accident? He searched every drawer. Every shelf. Every cabinet. Nothing. His headache suddenly returned. Sharp flashes of light filled his vision. For one brief second... He saw himself standing inside this very study. He was arguing with someone. "I won't help you!" The memory disappeared instantly. Adrian grabbed the edge of the desk to steady himself. "Damn..." His phone rang. The sudden sound made him jump. Unknown Number. His heartbeat accelerated. He answered cautiously. "...Hello?" "Dr. Cole." It wasn't the distorted voice from before. It was Chairman Richard Sterling. "Good afternoon." Adrian straightened. "Mr. Chairman." "I heard you've returned home." "Yes." "How are you feeling?" "I've been better." A brief silence followed. "I'd like you to come back to the hospital." Adrian frowned. "I thought I was suspended." "You are." "Then why return?" "There are matters we need to discuss." "What kind of matters?" "I'd rather explain them in person." Adrian hesitated. "I don't think the staff would appreciate seeing me." "Ignore them." "I'm not sure that's possible." Richard sighed. "Dr. Cole... despite everything that's happened, you gave eight years of exceptional service to this hospital." "I appreciate that." "The board has reached a temporary decision." Adrian listened carefully. "Although your surgical privileges remain suspended, we'd like to retain you as a medical consultant until the investigation concludes." Silence. "A consultant?" "You'll review patient cases, advise junior doctors, and assist with research." "But I won't operate." "No." Adrian looked around his empty mansion. Returning to the hospital meant returning to the very place where his nightmare had begun. It also meant returning to the only place where he might find answers. "When do you need me?" "Tomorrow morning." "I'll be there." "Good." The chairman paused. "And Adrian..." "Yes?" "If you're innocent..." "We'll discover the truth." The call ended. Adrian lowered the phone slowly. His eyes wandered back toward the open safe. Someone had searched his house. Someone had tried to kill him. Someone had framed him. And now... He was willingly walking back into the lion's den. He laughed bitterly. "What choice do I have?" --- Elsewhere across the city... Detective David Lawson remained buried beneath mountains of paperwork. The trafficking investigation had become the biggest case of his career. His office walls were covered with photographs. Maps. Suspects. Timelines. Every string eventually connected back to one man. Dr. Adrian Cole. Yet David still wasn't satisfied. His instincts refused to rest. He replayed yesterday's interrogation repeatedly. Adrian's confusion hadn't looked rehearsed. His panic had seemed genuine. David hated doubts. Doubts got detectives killed. A knock interrupted his thoughts. "Come in." Officer James entered carrying another file. "We received the forensic report from Dr. Cole's vehicle." David immediately looked up. "And?" "No fingerprints except the doctor's and the deceased driver." David frowned. "What about the truck?" "We still haven't found it." David rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "It's like it disappeared." "Exactly." Officer James hesitated. "Sir..." "What?" "Do you think Dr. Cole might actually be innocent?" David leaned back. "In my profession..." He folded his hands. "Believing isn't enough." "I follow evidence." "And right now?" "The evidence says he's guilty." "But your instincts?" David looked toward the rain outside his office window. "My instincts tell me someone isn't telling the whole truth." --- Back at the mansion... Night slowly covered the city. Adrian stood alone on the balcony overlooking the lights below. His life had changed in less than a week. From celebrated surgeon... To public enemy. He reached into his pocket and unfolded the mysterious letter once more. If you're reading this, you've lost your memory. Trust no one in this hospital... not even the chairman. He stared at his own handwriting. Why had he written it? What had he discovered? And if the chairman couldn't be trusted... Why had he just agreed to work under him again? His thoughts were interrupted by another memory. Very faint. Almost like a dream. Someone had handed him a small object. A key. Then a voice whispered— "Protect it..." Before Adrian could remember anything else, the memory vanished. He clenched his fists. "No..." "I'm tired of forgetting." He folded the letter carefully and slipped it back into his pocket. Tomorrow... He would return to St. Victoria Medical Center. Not as the hospital's finest surgeon. Not as a respected doctor. But as a man determined to uncover the truth hidden behind its spotless walls. Whatever secrets waited for him there... He was finally ready to face them. chapter four
