Ava
"Like seriously?" Logan covered his brother's mouth when Kyler spoke louder than he should have. "Are you talking about escaping?"
"Yes," he said, keeping a close eye on the room's entrance. "He leaves the door open anytime he comes in. I'm going to bite him hard when he gets inside and not let go, so you guys have to run."
"Logan, how about you?" Jamie let out a whine. "We're not going to leave you here."
"I'll be behind you guys," Logan said as the approaching footsteps grew louder. "Run as fast as you can and do as I say."
The room's door opened and they nodded. The scent he was giving off told Logan it would be the same man from the morning before. He walked in, leaving the door open, and fixed his gaze on the boys. As he set the tray down, Logan knew that was the best moment. As he met the man's gaze and looked down, he saw that his legs were bare and that he was dressed in shorts. He lunged at the man, grabbed his shin, and bit it without thinking.
Since Logan had baby teeth and they were still fragile, the bite shouldn't have caused much harm. But even the birds in the trees were startled when the man let out a loud cry of anguish. When Noah, Jamie, and Kyler understood it was their time to get away, they dashed to the door, but before they could get away, two more men emerged and snagged the boys by the hair.
The man cried, "Get this demon away from me," but Logan did not appear to want to let go of his leg.
The other man was screaming in anguish and his leg was bleeding when the men eventually managed to pull Logan away. The three brothers were horrified to see what was on Logan's face when the door was locked again after they had dragged the man outside, draped over their shoulders as he couldn't walk.
"Your eyes, Logan, they're yellow," Jamie remarked, causing his legs to shake.
I wasn't sure if I should trust Jay, so I turned to stare at him bewildered.
As I turned to look at the building, I heard Rae's voice getting closer. Time was of the essence — I had to make a decision right now. I grabbed the man's hand, barely knowing him, and ran into the forest. Walking nonstop seemed as though I was afraid of being discovered.
Jay tugged at me and told me to stop, saying, "Wait, Ava. We're safe now."
"We aren't." My worry was evident in my voice. "Until he locates me, Rae won't stop, and being the alpha, that won't take long."
"Please Ava, I've seen better than him," Jay spoke of Rae with contempt in his voice. "You need not worry, I'll take you to a secure location, and Rae won't find you easily."
I honestly wasn't sure if I should be relieved or if this was just another ruse to take me in.
"Where are we headed?" I questioned, gazing frightened at him.
"We're heading to my pack," he said, glancing in my direction.
I stopped instantly and gave him a wide-eyed look.
"Well, aren't you so smart," I said sarcastically. "That will definitely be Rae's first stop."
"Rae has no idea where I stay," he assertively retorted. "Ava, you seem to be really terrified of him. Why are you leaving?"
I was silent for a moment, debating whether or not to respond to that. My breath was very cold, and my eyelids were heavy and red.
"I'm not afraid of Rae. I haven't been to the pack in a very long time. I have no reason to remain there at this time." I responded after a short pause.
Jay looked at me expectantly, as if he was waiting for me to explain.
"I was Rae's fated mate. When I was rejected, I was carrying his children." I forcefully gulped. I hadn't talked to anyone about this in a very long time, let alone a stranger. "I fled and began living among humans as a result. My children were abducted, and because Rae was the only one who could help me, I turned to him for help."
"You seem to regret coming here," he said. "Why did you leave then, if Rae was the only one who could help you?"
Jay wasn't convinced by my response. "Because I want to find my children on my own."
I let out a sigh and peered around the thick foliage. I could only see the surrounding lush vegetation and trees.
I stopped almost instantly, as if the recollection struck me, and said, "You arrived at the pack claiming to have information about the quadruplets. How did you know about my children?"
Jay answered, "I have no idea what you're talking about," and strolled on nonchalantly. He gave me a quick glance and grinned.
That made me angry. I was determined not to fall for any trickery again. I leaped upon his back as I sprinted in his direction. I was too small for him, but I had a scarf in my hands, so I tightened it around Jay's neck, making him gasp for air.
"Jay, are you playing with me?" He came to a halt and struggled to breathe through his nose. "You claimed to be aware of my children's whereabouts. Tell me, right now."
Jay seized both of my arms and propelled me forward, throwing me to the ground and causing me to land on my back. In an instant, he was on top of me, immobilizing my arms.
"I never claimed to know your children's whereabouts." He stated. I fought desperately to get free, but it was in vain. Jay was almost twice as big as me. "I had to say that to keep the alpha from killing me."
Standing up, he brushed off the leaves that had stuck to his jeans and turned to face me. I was still lying on the ground, my eyes closed, and he seemed to be trying to take everything in.
"That's a lie, Jay," I said, getting to my feet and giving him another fierce glare. "What you're saying right now does not make any sense."
"How do you mean, Ava? There's nothing wrong with being afraid of an Alpha."
"Why are you helping me then? You don't seem to be afraid of anyone," I shook my body as I stood up and moved to stand next to him.
He began to move again and said, "I was simply running away, Ava," but I could feel his voice trembling. "If you don't want to be here, go back where you came from."
I kept moving forward, trailing in his footsteps. I could feel Jay was concealing something, like a secret. He knew where my kids were, I was pretty sure, and he would guide me to them when the time was perfect.
"What a werewolf you are." Jay certainly realized how smart I was by the abrupt change of topic.
He chuckled and said, "You seem quite intelligent for an omega. At least that's what my wolf says." He added, "But I'm a beta."
