CHAPTER 22. THE NEW BETA

Ava

"How did you find out?" I asked, furrowing my brow.

He kept walking swiftly, avoiding the trees, and replied, "I can detect it, even in your human form. I learned about bloodlines in a specialized course. Your characteristics confirm that you are an omega." He continued towards a large cliff.

I was taken aback when I heard what he said. I turned to him, intrigued, and wondered how he managed to keep it a secret for so long. Although I had a feeling that Rae had noticed it earlier. I decided not to reveal anything and changed the topic.

I sadly added, "Other werewolves say my scent is like that of humans."

"It's because their inner vision is limited," he said, caressing my cheeks with his thumb. "Within you lies a sleeping wolf."

It had been so long since I sensed that presence that I thought my wolf had vanished for good. It was no longer a possibility.

With confidence, he remarked, "Ava, she'll wake up when the time is right. Your wolf will awaken when you need her the most."

Still, it sounded like yet another massive lie. She was inactive and I needed her now. I called for my wolf, but it never came back. Even when I saw my children being taken away and Leila dead. If not now, then when would it be?

I could hear the sound of a river as I was thinking about these issues. A clearing appeared with each step we took further into the jungle. Jay glanced at that location and grinned, and I saw the long river that went across the entire forest up ahead.

"We've arrived at my pack," he declared, but all I could see was the surrounding forest and the river.

"I don't see anything, Jay." I added almost scared.

He answered, holding out his hand for me to grasp, "That's precisely why Rae will never find you here. Let me show you."

Ignoring Annie's voice, Rae strode past her and out onto the street, trailing me in my path. I was no longer there. Annie was shocked by what she was seeing as she pursued him. She took hold of Rae's large shoulder, needing to exert some force to get him to turn to face her.

"Please, Rae, don't make me go through this humiliation," she said, her eyes glistening with tears she was holding in.

He turned to face her and said, "I'm not humiliating anyone here. Ava is a member of this pack. I'd do the same for any other person." before turning to leave the building.

Annie chuckled at his words. He was using his position as an Alpha to cover up his lies and try to make sense of it.

With sadness in her voice, she said, "Well, Ava isn't just anyone, Rae. Everything about you changed the instant she entered this pack and said you had four children with her. You are now leaving your people to go find those bastards. She's trying to deceive you Rae."

"You're just being jealous, Annie. Please inform Kyle that I need to speak with him." He said to her coldly.

"It's important that we talk about what happened here," she urged.

He glared at her and replied, "There's nothing more to talk about. I already said what happened. Now, follow my instructions."

"How can I trust you?" With a loud, impatient sigh, Rae let out what Annie had spoken. "I saw everything, Rae."

"Yes, you saw whatever you saw Annie, and I already said nothing happened." He retorted. "Please, can we not do this right now? This matter should be put aside."

Annie's blood boiled at that. Not only was she angry at what she had witnessed, but she was also quite displeased with Rae's treatment of her following his betrayal. Annie, nevertheless, was determined that this would not be how things ended. Her position was at stake. Annie was determined to permanently remove me from their lives. She was going to do anything to achieve that.

She watched as Rae turned away from her and once more departed the room. She continued to pester him.

"Where are you heading to?" Her rushed gait conveyed her unease, as though she was worried about losing sight of him.

"I'm carrying out my responsibilities as an alpha," he curtly said. "Isn't that what I'm supposed to be doing?"

Without giving Annie another opportunity to continue the conversation, he hopped into the car and drove off. He headed toward the police station in the city. Like any human town, the pack was a regular society, but the laws were set by the Alphas.

He was in charge of all the legislation, supervising the deputies who carried it out. He noticed a change in atmosphere as soon as he walked into the police station. A murmur reverberated through the walls, and the staff gave him a weird look.

"Where's Deputy Derrick?" he asked the clerk, who instantly bowed in humility upon realizing the alpha was there.

"He left, sir," he said in a shaky voice. "Last night, the stranger named Jay broke out of the cell, and Deputy Derrick....."

"Broke out?" Rae growled.

The man's hands were shaking, as if he was afraid the alpha might hurt him. "I'm sorry, sir. We've already sent men searching for him," he said. "This time, he won't get away."

"Are you telling me this to make me feel better?"

Rae attempted to remain calm as his wolf became agitated, saying, "But it's not your fault, is it? You are merely this inept police station's clerk."

He punched the counter once, just hard enough to get the man startled. After giving him one more glance, Rae silently departed the police station. He wasn't sure what to do after getting inside the car.

He had lost all faith in Kyle after seeing how much he despised me. Considering how furious Annie was with him, he wasn't sure if he should leave the pack in her care and carry on looking for the quads.

Funny enough, not even up to twenty four hours since his departure from the pack, a prisoner had already managed to escape. It would descend into chaos if he left the city for yet another day. Above all, he needed reliable people at his side and a plan.

Once more, he exited the vehicle and went to the counter where the clerk was. The clerk flinched when he heard the alpha's voice again, not realizing that Rae was coming.

He inquired, "What's your name?" as the man got to his feet and gave him a terrified look.

"What's my name?" He could not say anything more since his voice was shaking.

"Okay, let's start over." Rae touched the man on the shoulder. "Although I'm the alpha, you shouldn't be so afraid. I'm only here to speak."

The man winced at his touch and smiled hesitantly. Rae was meant to be feared and respected by all in the pack. They had spent their entire lives learning in this manner. Nobody dared to question him, but some were more afraid than others.

"I'm Elio, Alpha." he murmured as he observed Rae getting closer.

"I can sense your wolf, Elio. And you have a strong wolf, despite your fear. Care to explain?" Rae inquired.

"I come from a bloodline of betas sir," he replied, lowering his gaze as if unable to meet Rae's eyes.

"Elio, I need someone trustworthy by my side," Rae stated, making sure no one else could hear him. "I want you to be my new beta."

Elio gave him a perplexed look.
