CHAPTER 13. THE ASSASSINATORS

1298 Words
Ava Rae got so furious at the sight of one of the armed men shattering his glass while he still thought of how to act. Rae got ready to step out of the car as he opened the door and felt rage fill his body. "There are over ten hefty men out there Rae. What do you think you're doing?" I said, tears welling up in my eyes. "How dare they touch my car?" His eyes gleamed as he emerged, indicating that his wolf was present. "I don't want you to get hurt Ava. Stay in the car." Despite my knowledge of Rae's power and fighting skills, I thought it was ridiculous that he intended to face these men by himself — the plan looked too dangerous. I felt bad that I couldn't assist him. Since my wolf had left me, I was helpless to defend myself. I was almost human. His hands were lifted as if he was giving up as he got out of the vehicle. About eighteen men lifted their bats, and judging by their demeanor, they weren't here to talk or discuss anything. One of them pointed at me and said, "We want her," to Rae as he peered inside the vehicle. Rae turned to face me and realized they intended to kill me. I feared maybe the quads were already dead, and he could hear my own heart thumping frantically. "We'll release you once you hand over the woman." With his howling wolf inside of him, Rae looked at him. He smiled sarcastically, indicating that they were going nowhere with me. With his claws poised to seize them, he declared, "You won't touch her. You will need to go through me if you want her." A few seconds later, the group ran at Rae with bats lifted, as the man who was undoubtedly in charge grinned at him. Rae only had to make a move to grip his neck and jab his long, sharp claws through his veins. "You have no idea who you're playing with, skunks." The man struck his head hard on one of the garbage cans where Arthur was hiding after he was thrown aside. The others stared wide-eyed at Rae's powerful frame when the group's leader passed out. Although his erect stance gave the impression that he was just another human, his yellow eyes and the fur that slowly emerged showed that they were powerless against that being. Some of the men ran frantically while the others withdrew as Rae unleashed his wolf. Upon returning to the car, Rae shifted back to his human form, but his inner wolf was still restless inside of him. He jumped in and drove quickly out of town. "R- Rae?" "What did they want?" My eyes met his, still blue, as I turned. Something stirred within me again. I wonder why though. "They were here for you, Ava." My heart began to skip with fear. "Apparently whoever took the kids still wants your head." As Logan opened his eyes and tried to figure out where he was, the sun had already begun to rise. The room was filthy, gloomy, and reeked of mold. He noticed that Noah, Jamie, and Kyler were all sleeping, their eyes swollen from crying so much. Then he thought back to that awful night they'd spent together. How they missed their mommy and were scared. The crying over Leila's passing, however, was the worst. Logan would always remember what he had witnessed that evening. He knew he had to be strong for himself and his brothers. It was now his duty to fulfill the promise he had made to his mother, to always look out for his brothers. Despite being quads, they were different in nearly every way. Jamie was agitated and prone to crying, while Kyler was just angry. Noah was the more reserved one. Had Logan not been present, it's possible that the brothers would have lost their minds due to the mental abuse they endured while being held captive there. He was trying to figure out his whereabouts. The room had no windows. Logan searched for any scrap of light so that he could see outside and see what was going on. He tried to peer through the little hole in the wall when he noticed rapid footsteps approaching and the loud creak of an old metal door opening. The man kicked Jamie in the legs and said, "Stand up, you useless animals." When Logan tried to stop the man from harming his brother any further, he grabbed him by the hair, making him grunt in pain. "Ah, I see, you're the most courageous one. So foolish." Logan tried to extricate himself from the man's rage as he nearly lifted the kid by his hair. "Do you believe you can fight me boy?" The man laughed, taking pleasure in the boy's pain. With violence, he let go of Logan and the boy collapsed next to his three brothers. He yelled, "Just to remind y'all that this ain't a vacation," once more. "Eat and get up before I decide to change my mind." When Noah took one glance at the meal — which smelled like trash, he nearly passed out. He missed the meals their mother used to prepare, meals he frequently turned down. "You reek," Logan snarled at the man, exposing his tiny teeth. "Oh really? And what do I reek of, boy?" Pressing his face into Logan, he leaned forward. In response, Logan said, "Like a useless animal." The only issue was that, despite his young age of seven, the boy possessed the bravery of an adult. The most furious of them all, Kyler, charged at him and kicked the man in the shin as the man raised his hand to strike Logan. "Get away from my brother!" he exclaimed, anger pulsing through his petite frame. The man instantly let forth a pained groan. He wanted to choke those boys till their breath left them as they writhed on the ground. Those kids appeared to be different — the person who had ordered the kidnapping had stipulated that the boys should be kept alive till further notice before standing up and maintaining the appearance of intense pain. Then he turned to face the boys, all of them. The man complained, massaging his hurt leg, "I can't handle kids, and to be truthful, I wasn't hired to babysit them. That's not what I do. This is f*cking ridiculous." The second man asked, "If you can't simply handle a few kids, then what else do you think you'd be capable of doing with your miserable life?" The man said, "Kids? They're not kids, they're monsters, they're demons." The other man burst out laughing. Logan could sense his stronger scent even a long way away. It smelled like liquor and cigarette. He laughed some more, asking, "Did you hear that boys? You'll go without food for the rest of the day since you're monsters. Monsters don't need food anyway. That'll teach y'all." The man squatted, grabbed the four plates of food and hurled them out of the room. The first man nearly squirmed with delight. "I want to see mommy." Kyler sobbed as Jamie hugged him right away. Logan felt fear well up in his chest. He thought back to the last time he saw his mother. He had assured her that he would never allow himself to be afraid and that he would be as strong as a werewolf. He turned to embrace his brothers after swallowing some tears that had lodged in his throat. They argued a lot most of the time, to the point where it drove Ava crazy, but they finally realized that in order to survive, the all had to support each other.
