CHAPTER 10. GUILTY

1215 Words
Ava "You are too troubled about my presence, Alpha King! I'm just an ordinary omega. By the way, I'm only visiting Grey's art shop, just like you're doing Alpha." Emmy grinned, showing his really mean teeth. “You dare not talk to your Alpha in such manner!” Rae snarled at him holding his throat to the wall. The tension was strong but I was yet to know what connection Rae had with that stranger. I walked over and put my hand on his arm to calm his mind. "Babe, we have little or no time for this. Our kids' lives are at a very high stake." I beseeched. He halted and turned to face Emmy. "Is that a human I smell? Who could that be?" Emmy gave a menacing stare. My brows furrowed. How could they think I'm human? Just because I've lived around humans for just seven years does not mean I'm one. Of course, it still bothered me that I no longer felt my wolf within me, but that would never anger me after all humans treated me better. "First of all, that's not your business Jay. Secondly, I don't want you around my territory, let alone my pack." Rae said, pushing the man aside. Grinning, the man moved aside to let Rae go past. When I realized he was still observing, even from a distance, I shuddered. When Rae discovered the car, still deep in the woods, the memories of the past overtook me once more. I hissed, a little deeper this time, and watched Rae open the door and get inside the vehicle. The most heartfelt vows of love that a pack will never hear were in that car. We kissed for the first time in that car. I nearly started crying remembering how joyful I had been. I patted my eyes and returned my focus back to the present as I realized what was going on. Calling my name, Rae turned on the engine. A blast of warm air assaulted my face as soon as I opened the car door. Nothing seemed to be different. The car's dirt was the same, too. A silly smile beamed on my face but I bit it back when I saw Rae observing me. He questioned, staring directly into my eyes, "Is something wrong?" "No," I said with a serious look as I rolled my eyes. "Didn't think this would still be your favorite car." "Why not, Ava? It still is." He turned his focus to the small gravel road ahead and started the engine. I debated whether or not to say anything while Rae punched the pedal, sending the car skidding down the dirt road. "I don't know, maybe because of the memories it carries." I added. My heart hurt when he said, "I'm not attached to any memories. I enjoy the feeling of driving the car and the car itself." That made me sad to hear. How could Rae forget the times we'd spent together here? As Rae made his way toward the main road, I stopped talking. Like two strangers in a car with absolutely nothing to talk about to each other, the ride was silent. I was holding hundreds of things in my throat, just ready to say to Rae, but I didn't even have the courage to do so. He was the Alpha king now. Powerful and quite ruthless. How could someone as unimportant as myself possibly get his attention? I considered it for a few minutes, then gave up and said nothing. There was utter nothingness on Rae's face, and no expression at all, no matter how hard I tried to figure out what he was thinking. We reached the main entrance after three hours. My heart raced wildly as Rae pulled the car to a stop. I was not ready to go back to where the crime was committed and maybe discover Leila's corpse there. I tightly clutched my despair, preventing it from escaping. "Where do we go from here?" He turned to face the road ahead, waiting for a response. "Keep going," I said, swallowing my fear, "I'll let you know when we arrive." I pointed vaguely to my home, which was one of the most beautiful houses on the street despite being in a poor neighborhood, and police cars were parked in front of it. Rae parked the car safely away and gave me a doubtful look. "Did you inform the police about the quads' kidnapping?" I turned to face him, not understanding that silly question. "Rae, what sort of silly question is that?" I thundered almost screaming. "If I informed the police, then why would I come to you?" I said, glancing back at the building as tears welled up in my eyes. "Leila is my best friend, the only human who took me in as family and loved me like no one ever has even as she barely knew me. Leila is the reason they are there." My eyes welled with tears, and Rae avoided looking into my eyes, sensing how distraught I was. Not precisely sure why. "Who is Leila?" Rae enquired. "Why is that too relevant?" I answered, glancing back at him with impatience. "Because I need to investigate any potential link between Leila and the abduction of the boys," he uttered, striking the driving wheel. "She might have a hand in it." Upon hearing Rae make that suggestion, I became quite angry and thought of throwing things at him. In an attempt to calm myself, I rolled my eyes and then closed them. "You mean to tell me that she would pretend to be dead or even worse, give her life in order to abduct my kids?" Rae saw that my finger was pointing toward the scene of the crime as I was speaking. Upon closer inspection, he observed the woman's body being taken out. It was illogical, to be honest. Another tear fell from my eye, "Leila loved my children more than anyone. She would never think of harming them." The car was strangely silent for a while until the car with Leila's body in it drove away. Seeing the sight and knowing that I was not there to say goodbye to my best friend saddened me. Though it was too late, I wished I could go over there and tell those people the truth. Nothing I would do could bring back Leila. "The police will definitely come after you," Rae stated, which left me even more saddened. "What do you mean, Rae?" I exhaled deeply, frustrated, feeling my heart quicken. With a shudder down my spine, he stated the obvious. "The girl was killed inside your house, Ava, and you fled your home without leaving a trail. You are the main suspect, and I don't need to be a detective to figure that out. You're certainly good at running away from things." "I know but I'd never do something like that." "Do they look like they care about that?" As I became aware of what Rae had just spoken, my gaze drifted out into space. I would now face two very serious issues: locating my kids and avoiding the cops. Holy goodness. This is definitely a nightmare. A very terrible one. Will I ever wake from it?
