CHAPTER 18. WHILE HE SLEPT

Ava

"Mchewww." I sighed deeply and left for the bathroom to shower down. It would be so insensitive and tempting to spend the last hours of the night in the same room with Rae. Annie already despised me, so she would have tangible reasons to blame me and an unheard-of argument with her mate if she found out he had spent the night with an ordinary rejected omega. But I knew there was absolutely nothing I could do about the matter. There was no way I could convince Rae to reconsider.

I discovered one of Rae's old shirts in the bathroom and put it on before I came out. I had nothing to wear and had fled my house without packing any clothes.

I noticed something I hadn't felt in a while when Rae turned to face me. He soon stopped responding or uttering words. He merely observed me, attempting to conceal his admiration.

"I figured wearing this shirt wouldn't be an issue after finding it in the bathroom."

"Not a problem," he said, staring at me nonstop. "I'll ask someone to buy clothes for you tomorrow."

I thought it was nice that he wouldn't ask Annie, at least. A blanket was prepared for me when I moved to the mattress. Rae had turned away from me when I looked at him again. I lay down on it. The mattress was plush, and the blanket had a rose scent to it. I dozed off shortly after.

It had been a while since Rae had stopped to look at me, and I could tell he had forgotten how gorgeous I was. He walked over to where I was and placed a blanket down on the big couch next to me. Before long, we were both sound asleep.

I only found out what happened on Annie's end much later.

She was startled awake that same morning. The sun was already in the sky and the streets were already busy with activities.

It was still very early when she looked at the clock, but her heart hurt when she looked sideways and didn't see Rae. For the first time in many years, the Alpha didn't sleep next to his wife in their bed.

She had the impression that she was losing control over her marriage. When she dashed to the office, Rae was also absent. All through the house, there was no trace of him. There was a knock on the door when she nearly gave up. When she hurried to unlock it, Kyle was waiting for her. Kyle never went into the home until invited, despite being the brother of the Alpha's Luna. It was a gesture of deference and authority toward Rae.

"Have you seen Rae?" Kyle was perplexed. "I'm here to see him."

She put her palm on her chest. "For the goddess's sake," as though she was experiencing a sharp ache there and wanted to sit down in order to avoid passing out completely.

"Is he not at home?" Kyle went inside and looked around as though he could use his strong senses to locate Rae, but there was no sign of him.

Kyle settled down next to her as she spoke. "Yesterday we had an argument. He was avoiding my touch, avoiding being near me, and he left."

"What was his reason?" Kyle looked interested in finding out how the story ended.

She rolled her eyes. "He complained of being stressed out and tired and having difficulties, or something like that, then we got into the delicate subject of not birthing kids for him and the fact that Ava came back into the picture."

Kyle realized his sister had made a mistake and put his hand to his face.

"I know you're upset about Ava coming back and bringing four kids with her, but it was wrong of you to put him under such pressure, especially with someone like Rae. You must, at least for your marriage, behave as though Ava doesn't exist." He advised in disappointment.

"It's easy for you to say when it's me that has to deal with the fact that my husband is with his ex-mate out there," she said.

He clenched his teeth and hands, saying, "I detest Ava too, but we can't get her out of here. Rae is dedicated to protecting her and locating the missing kids."

"Now, what should I do?" She lost her temper and let loose all the pain she had been holding inside since that morning. "Just watch Ava ruin everything I've worked so hard to accomplish with Rae? If I can't think of anything, she'll take him away from me."

"Annie, you're already working on something."

"It's not enough, Kyle." She yelled with watery eyes, almost bursting into tears.

She left Kyle alone and made her way to the bedroom to change into good clothes before leaving.

While her husband was somewhere in this city with me, she would not wait for him there. Annie was not the kind of woman to back down from a fight and lose. She told Kyle to go with her when she was ready and headed out.

"Where are we heading to?" Aware of Annie's facial expression, Kyle inquired.

"Where else Kyle? We're going in search of the Alpha."

People's watchful eyes shifted to them as they strolled through the streets. Annie thought it was really weird. Some people mocked her, while others felt sorry for her. She got the impression that everyone knew something, but not her.

"Why are people staring at me?" She whispered.

Annie was going mad, in Kyle's opinion.

He explained, "What do you expect them to do Annie? Aren't you their Luna? They are admiring you."

She grew agitated once more and shouted, "Kyle, don't be naive to assume that I'm foolish. They're looking at me with pity, as if they know something I don't."

"Sincerely Annie, everyone is aware that Ava has returned and brought the Alpha's kids along," Kyle said, clearing his throat. "You can tell they're sorry for you."

Though she decided not to add to the agony of that talk, Annie felt that he was making fun of her. When they arrived at the main building, Annie went directly to the basement, confusing Kyle.

"Annie, where are you going?" he inquired as they made their way downstairs.

She unlocked the door and remarked, "I locked that b*tch up in here."

But the surprise was even bigger — I wasn't there, which raised Annie's suspicions even further.

Kyle tried to reason, "Maybe Rae left too early and took Ava with him."

Her blazing eyes glared at Kyle, saying, "Don't you dare try to defend your friend Kyle. I'm sure Rae is somewhere in this building."

She ignored him and continued walking up the stairs, not stopping until she arrived at the building's main floor. She knew where to find us based on her rapid steps towards one of the rooms. With caution, she opened the door — and Annie nearly lost the last of her composure when she saw us there together. She was furious.
