Aria walked toward Ezra and stopped just a few feet away. Maintaining proper decorum at all times. "You're back early," she said.
"I am. Thinks... didn't turn out as we'd hoped."
"Oh no, I hope everything is okay?"
Ezra appreciated her concern, but he couldn't discuss anything with her. "It'll be alright, don't worry about it. Do you have anything to report concerning our little mission?" He winked at her.
"Well, you've only been gone two days. However, I did get them alone in the garden yesterday. I was walking with mother when the King came along. I bowed out and they ended up spending two hours together."
"Oh that's good... very good. Since you're still here I'm sure it went well."
"Oh I think it did. Mother has been in a very good mood."
"Perfect... keep up the good work. I have to report to the King for duty. I hope to see you again soon."
Aria's face fell for a moment, "of course. Be well." She returned to her seat and picked up her book.
Ezra walked away, but he felt a pull toward her. Was it because she was the only genuinely kind woman he'd been in contact with since the start of the war so many years ago? Bridgit didn't count and neither did his sister. It didn't feel anything like the mate bond... he wondered if this is what his sister felt for her chosen mate. She had been fated to their future Alpha, but he didn't want an Omega so she rejected him. Later, she fell for someone else who'd also dealt with rejection. Their love was something out of a fairytale. He was genuinely happy for them, but a little jealous. He hoped to feel that deep devotion someday. But he was getting ahead of himself. Aria was under his protection as part of the guard and starting a romantic relationship under those conditions wouldn't be proper. She was also a princess, deserving of a prince. Aria was off limits. The thought didn't exactly make him sad, but he didn't like it either.
Finally, he entered the King's office after a short knock at the door. He reported the King all that had gone on during his trip.
"I have full confidence you'll handle this properly, but I have to warn you. Don't let the mate bond cloud your judgment here. She could use it against you, Ezra. It could get very dangerous."
"I know, your majesty. That's where I'm afraid to mess up the most. I have to keep logic at the forefront, always. My heart needs to remain on off mode."
"Usually, I'd say listen to your wolf. However, where the mate bond is concerned, you can't listen to your wolf at all. Your wolf wants that bond, longs for it. He will whisper in your head. Ignore him, until the bond is broken anyway."
Ezra heard his wolf growl in the back of his mind. No wolf wanted to be ignored. They were an integral part of who the werewolf was as a whole. It was for the best though, for now. He tried to calm his wolf, but they were to be at odds for the time being.
Ezra worked the rest of the day shadowing the King. It wasn't until night fall that he got a call about Bridgit. Her car had been seen fifty miles north, pulling into a remote, isolated town. Ezra thought she was perhaps going to lie low there. He got her location, told his superior where he was going and got into his car. He sped in the direction of his runaway mate.
When he pulled into the town she was supposed to be in, heading straight for the motel she'd checked into, it was getting late. He hoped to find her sleeping... alone. She was less likely to be a problem if caught unawares. He knew what room she was in, so he parked out of sight of it. Surveying the parking lot he noted two cars, one was Bridgit's. The front desk light was on and a greasy teenage boy sat behind the counter. He was on his phone. This wasn't pack territory. The people here were not werewolves. He'd need to keep that in mind. Revealing oneself to a human was illegal and could be punishable by death.
Ezra stalked cautiously toward Bridgit's door. The light was off and everything was quiet. He stood right outside the door, listening. He couldn't hear anything from the inside. He picked the lock quickly and opened the door. Closing it behind him, he sniffed the air. Only Bridgit's scent. The form on the bed moved and suddenly sat up. Ezra flipped a light on before she had a chance to shift.
"What are you doing here?" she shrieked.
