When Ezra pulled onto the palace grounds he lost no time running straight to his superior, Ransom Mitchell, and requesting an emergency meeting with the King included. It was granted and within thirty minutes Ezra stood before the King, his boss and all the fellow Guard's members that could be summoned. He pinned up a side by side of the clear, color picture of Markus Daniels the parole officer employed here and Markus Daniels the deceased parole officer. The differences were subtle, but when side by side, it didn't take long to spot them. "Bridgit's parole officer is a conman. He is not who he says he is. I would stake my life on the theory that he is of the Silver Water Pack. She clearly still has ties to it. They're working together."
The King looked pensive, "who authorized his hire? Without a thorough background check."
Ezra didn't want to point fingers, he stood silent for a moment.
"Well?" the king pressed.
Ransom stood, "your highness. The chief jailer is responsible for hires. There is a team responsible for running background checks."
Ezra cleared his throat. "I'd like to draw attention to these..." he placed the information given to them, Markus Daniels information, in front of the King and Ransom. "All of this information looks good. The issue was that no call was placed to confirm any of it. With the extreme need for parole officers here, since so many prisoners from the war were going on parole, it got lost in the frey."
"It is an understandable mistake, but a mistake that could've been fatal. I understand your heart, Ezra," the King said graciously.
"I think that we should keep this information to ourself for now. I want to watch them and find out what they're up to before we spring them," Ezra said.
Someone in the back scoffed.
The King rose and looked behind him, "does someone have something to say?"
"Uhh, it's just... Ezra has no authority to make suggestions. He's just an Omega," he practically spit the word. "We can't trust him to make level decisions."
"Being an Omega doesn't mean anything right now. He's worked his way into a place of honor and he's uncovered information no one else even thought of. He made a suggestion, not a decision. I suggest you fix your attitude and give respect where it's earned."
The man looked down and fidgeted. The King sat back down and turned to Ezra. "You have three days to gather as much information as you can. An arrest will be made on the third day, do you understand?"
"I understand, thank you your highness."
The meeting was adjourned and Ezra headed to Bridgit's house. If she was home, he would butter her up. If she wasn't, he would search her place. Turns out, she was home. She let him in and he sat down on her bed. "Do you ever feel anything from our mate bond?" he asked.
"No..." she answered, looking at him curiously.
"I don't feel anything, but I wish I did," he looked at her with, what he hoped, was a sad look on his face.
She looked surprised and lost for words. "I, umm, I don't know what to say."
"Do you ever wonder what would've happened if we'd actually worked out?"
She looked down, "I've thought about it. During the war when you were in charge of keeping track of me and we worked together to decode my old pack's codes, I had really felt something for you. I didn't know what it was then, but... I admired you, at the very least."
Ezra didn't really believe her. She could be playing the same game he was, for all he knew.
Bridgit moved to the bed next to him and put her hand on his leg. "You know, we could have some fun. Now that we're not mated and it won't bond us or anything." She batted her lashes at him.
He was not going to have s*x with her. She was beautiful and he could've loved her his whole life. If she wasn't who she was and hadn't committed the acts she had. "I'm not really ready for that... but..." he said, leaning in. "Just a kiss will do?" She didn't answer, she just pressed her lips to his and wrapped her arms around him. She deepened the kiss and sat in his lap, wrapping her legs around him. Ezra put his hands on her lower back and pulled her in. She broke the kiss and looked at him, "you sure you don't want to go further?"
Ezra bit his lip, he couldn't deny enjoying some feminine touch. However, he couldn't get the image of Aria out of his head. "Keep this up and maybe I will, but not now. Not yet," he winked at her. He picked her up and placed her on the bed. "See you later," he said as he left. He could tell she was flustered and her heart beat faster. He, on the other hand, felt dirty. But he needed to get her guard down and get it down fast. If she felt like she had him in her clutches then she'd slip up. The moment she did he'd figure out what she was up to.
