Chapter 4 Thor woke to the sound of dishes clanging, water running in the sink, and soft humming. Wonderful aromas drew his eyes open. He stared straight ahead, blinked, and finally wiped at his eyes. The image didn’t change in the least. First, where his plain circular white clock once hung, now a black cat with a dial face was mounted on the wall. Its tail moved back and forth with each tick. As he stared, it chimed the quarter hour, marking the passing with a quick little “meow.” Just great. I’ll be hearing housecat sounds in my sleep. His gaze took in something else, probably more disturbing, too. Artwork hung on his far wall. At least he thought it was artwork. Honestly, he couldn’t be sure. Definitive shapes were lacking, as was focus. Instead, indulgent smudged circular patterns
