Chapter Forty-nine Oscar held the conference in his chambers, as Matthew’s nearby room was not only much smaller but lacking in basic comforts, like carpet, comfortable chairs, or even a small window to let outside light enter the tiny room. Oscar’s room was no great improvement, but it at least had an old-world, lived-in atmosphere – much like an old pair of shorts or a worn tee-shirt – that somehow relaxed Matthew’s spirit.
