Judge Hugh Latimer, QC, cast a baleful eye over the defence team and shook his head. How on earth did the accused detective think it would be a good idea to instruct a geriatric barrister to lead an inexperienced junior barrister to defend him? he mused to himself. Did he think that the trial was some sort of game?
There was nothing he enjoyed more than to joust verbally with a brilliant Queen’s Counsel in a high-profile trial. He regarded it as a type of legal chess, and in cases where the stakes were a sentence of perhaps fifteen or twenty years, then so much the better. Latimer’s life at the criminal bar had been a glittering affair, but his subsequent appointment to the District Court bench, the second tier of state judicial life, had been a bitter disappointment.
