Matthew admitted to himself that despite his enthusiastic talk to Angelo and his wife, he had the gravest misgivings about the charges. The oldest defence raised in almost every drug possession charge was a complete lack of knowledge. ‘They were planted’ was the call heard from every dock in every courtroom in the land. The larger the quantity however, the more difficult that defence became. Matthew could see the Crown prosecutor standing before the jury and, in a friendly, persuasive tone, asking how a small fortune in drugs could belong to someone else: ‘Is there a drug Santa Claus that leaves presents of commercial quantities of heroin lying about? But it was not lying about. It was in the locked family car boot. What a clever Santa he was.’
