It wasn’t long after Reaper had his little fit that the door bell rang. Luckily for me, I knew that meant the food was here. Unluckily for me, when I opened the door, it was Dylan that was on the porch with the delivery.
He was all smiles until the boys got excited behind me asking about the pizza and beer. They took both into the house and Dylan took me into the porch. He was instantly poised and I knew it by the time of his voice. The door stayed partially open, but it didn’t bother him. “Who the hell are these guys babe?” All I could do was lay my hand on my face and shake my head slightly. His patience started to run thin and he asked again, this time making mention of the beer. “Dylan, I will not tell you again. I am not your babe, your girl, your baby, or your anything. Do. Not. Refer. To. Me. As. These. Or. Any. Other. Pet. Name. Again! And furthermore, who I have at my house is not your concern. You and I are done, remember? Or have your forgotten that you decided that basic human decency wasn’t needed in a relationship?” He stepped toward me, but not threateningly, more soft. But the door opened rather quickly and I turned to see Reaper with a piece of pizza in one hand and a beer in the other walking towards me. He looked at me, after swallowing his bite, and asked if I was coming inside soon. I was quite shocked, Mr. Broody was actually speaking and it was a question that seemed like he wanted to be in my presence. He stuffed the last bite of the crust in his mouth, chewed it up, and chugged down the last of the beer all while walking towards us. He put his arm around my shoulder and nodded his head back like what guys do in a gesture towards Dylan. He looked me in the eye and asked again, “are you coming in soon?”
I know I had a shocked look on my face, and as I looked between Dylan and Reaper, I could tell just how shocked Dylan was too. I looked at him and said, “yeah, just give me a few minutes. I need to pay for the pizza and Dylan will be leaving.” Reaper pulled out $60 in cash and asked Dylan if it would be enough for the food, beer and tip. Dylan shook his head yes and took the money. I asked Reaper to give me 5 minutes and I’d be in. He didn’t take the subtlety and I had to ask him to go inside. He finally walked in, but not until after a staring contest with Dylan first.
“5 minutes, that’s it. I promised Bones,” Reaper stated. I was confused to what he meant, but didn’t question it and agreed. Reaper walked inside and closed the door. I turned back to Dylan ready to scream and yell and possibly even hit him. But he had a sadness in his eyes. Almost as though he was pleading with me for answers, and my resolve to yell at him dissipated. I took in a deep breath and told him, “Dylan, we have been over this. You and I have broken up. We aren’t getting back together and I have forgiven you. But this is unhealthy. You cannot find a way to understand that you and I will not work this out, so at this point, we shouldn’t even be friends. It’s blurring the lines for you, and it’s not fair. Maybe one day, we can learn to be friends, but right now, it’s just not okay. Now, I want you to know that I will be leaving soon. I’m moving, because I need to start over. And I won’t be back for quite a while,” I was interrupted when he asked where I was going. But, it wasn’t his right to know. And it infuriated me all over again. But, I didn’t show it. I wasn’t going to deal with this again. “Like I said, I need to start over. That means leaving my past here. Maybe one day, when I feel like I’ve healed enough, I can let everyone know where I’m at. For now, be okay with me telling you if I’m okay.”
He nodded his head with an expression that looked like he finally understood. He walked over to me, kissed the top of my head, gave me a hug, and told me he just wanted to know when I made it safely to wherever I was going. I agreed and he finally walked back to his truck, but not before reminding me that he loved me one more time.
