***Ryker POV*** "Why did you hurt her? Why did you hurt our mate?!" Aries muttered continuously in my head after I threw Iris against the wall and left the room. The impact of her back striking the hard surface moved through my spine as though I was the one affected. This beast is really annoying, my teeth gritted, the enamel grinding together so hard my jaw muscles throbbed. I raised a heavy hand and rubbed my forehead in frustration. "Shut up Aries!" "No I won't, you are selfish Ryker." His voice inside my skull was a low growl, vibrating down to the soles of my feet, making my blood boil with heat. "Shut up!" "Gideon is already dead, you should get over it Ryker. She's innocent." Arghhhh. I slammed my hands hard on the table. The sharp, thunderous c***k echoed off the stone walls of my study, sending piles of papers flying onto the ground and drifted through the air like fallen leaves before landing on the floor. The force of the strike vibrated up my forearms, numbing my wrists, but the sharp pain did nothing to stop the raging storm in my chest. “I hope you get over your twisted act of vengeance,” Aries puffed. The mental pressure suddenly lifted, leaving a cold, hollow ache in its place as he retreated into the deepest recesses of my mind. My shoulder sagged and I dropped on a wooden chair which made a creaking sound as my weight rested on it. Gideon may be dead but it not satisfying enough since I didn’t kill him, so his daughter deserves every bad treatment in the world for having the blood of a murderer. The image of his face flashed behind my eyelids, stoking the embers of a hatred I had nurtured for years. Iris had his eyes. She had his blood. And every time I looked at her, the scent of hatred flooded my senses, suffocating me. Last night, I felt a jolt of pain in my chest and Aries keep pacing restlessly that Iris was in danger, that was when I entered the yard and saw her transformed and tore off that lowly maid chest. The guards stood back in bewilderment unable to move. She was covered in blood collapsing on the floor and changed back to her human form. I hate the fact that part of me especially my rebellious wolf cared about her and whenever she's in danger I'm also affected. “Can i come in Alpha?” Derek’s voice mind linked me, interrupting my thoughts. The sudden intrusion sent a dull ache in my temple. “Come in!“ The door opened carefully and he walked in and bowed curtly. His nostrils flared slightly as he caught the tense scent of my agitating aura lingering in the room. His eyes darted to the scattered papers on the floor but he quickly looked away his expression blank. “How is the investigation going?” I asked dryly, leaning back against the chair and pressed my thumb on my golden ring. “We scouted the Winter pack borders and found no traces of the killer.” “Damn it!” I growled and slammed my fist on the table causing it to rattle violently. A small c***k form at the edge. “You have to find him no matter what and that letter and I must know what's in it." My claws pricked through the skin of my fingertips, drawing a single bead of blood that I didn't care to wipe away. That letter was the cause of everything to begin with. Derek's head lowered. He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple moving against his high collar as he absorbed the brunt of my alpha pressure. "Yes Alpha, I will try my possible best to find the letter." "Good!" My palm raised in dismissal. Derek turned his boots making soft thuds against the floor. "Wait!" He stopped in his tracks his shoulder turning rigid. "Have the maids give Gideon's daughter good food." My fist clenched so tightly my bones popped. What the hell am I saying? She was eating good food before. The sudden betrayal of my own voice felt like a punch to the gut. It wasn't me speaking—it was the lingering, manipulative thread of the mate bond pulling at my tongue. Derek cleared his throat briefly, a flicker of surprise passing over his features before he quickly masked it again. "Okay Alpha," he said and walked out. The door closed loudly behind him, the heavy latch clicking shut with a finality that seemed to echo in the quiet room. I sighed and closed my eyes, letting my head fall back against the hard wooden support of the chair. The darkness behind my eyelids offered no relief, only the lingering memory of Iris terrified expression as she hit the wall, and the persistent, low hum of my wolf waiting for me to break.
