The missing ring

IRIS POV Early the next morning the head maid announced all of us to come outside, I hadn’t even recovered from the shock of what Ryker did the previous day. My hands automatically went to my throat, Snow had healed the wound but the skin there was still sore. My mind still reeled. I could admit i really passed my boundaries, knowing we had no good relationship I shouldn’t have touched his things especially his late wife’s. “Why is the witch calling us?” Mira groaned Stretching out her sleepy hands and sat up from her small bed. She rubbed her eyes and yawning loudly and looked completely exhausted. I wasn’t even listening to her, I gave a small, distracted nod as I tied my hair back with a string. A heavy, dark fear I didn’t understand was sitting in my stomach, and I couldn’t shake it off. We walked outside into the cold morning air. Dew had fell from the Sky wetting the floor. The other maids were already out there, huddled together in groups. The air grew tense. The head maid stood on the stone steps with five guards. Her face was stern and her arms were crossed tight over her chest. The guards looked dangerous. Their hands rested on the handles of their swords. They scanned our faces like predators watching prey. “What’s going on?” “Why are the guards here?” Murmurs filled everywhere. The quiet, anxious chatter rose like a swarm of bees, everyone shifting uncomfortably on their feet, casting worried glances at one another. “Quiet!” The head maid barked, her old face squeezed in pure anger. Everyone obeyed at once. The courtyard went so quiet you could hear the wind in the pine trees far away. My breath caught and my eyes were locked on the old woman as she stepped down from the stone platform. Her stare was sharp enough to cut. “Search their rooms, break the floors if you must, the Alpha ring must be found!” She said loudly to the guards a they moved towards our rooms. Sounds of scattering things was heard next. We were all shocked wondering what was going on but we didn’t dare move. Alpha ring? Did someone steal? The very thought made my blood run cold. Stealing a personal crest from a ruthless man like Ryker—was an automatic death sentence. Who would be foolish enough to commit such a crime under his roof? My mind raced through the possibilities, but before I could think any further, the head maid moved. She marched forward looking sternly as ever. “If we find the ring by any chance, I shall deal with the thief and make sure she wish for death.” The maids gasped. Some covered their mouths. Their faces went pale. There was so much hate in her voice. Whoever did this was going to be torn apart. Then the she looked right at me and started walking toward me. Wait what’s she trying to do? Hope it not what I’m thinking! Time felt like it was slowing down as her wrinkled, cruel face got closer and closer My breath caught and cold swear broke out of the back of my neck. I guess I’m reacting that way because she has traumatized me. “You better pray luck is on your head Wolf!” She whispered. I froze. What luck? Is she thinking I stole the ring? So pathetic! The guards came out of the other rooms empty-handed. They were cursing under their breath as they walked toward me and Mira’s room. Our room faced outside, so we could see everything through the big window with no curtains. My eyes were stuck on the open doorway. Beside me, I felt Mira shaking. Her shoulder pressed against mine as we watched them scatter our things. They turned Mira bed and stuff but found nothing, then they reached for my bed and when the push it up, a guard stopped, his dark eyes narrowing as his fingers brushed against the wooden frame underneath. He reached into the small crevice, his hand tracing the under of my bedsheets. He pulled his hand back, a golden metal gleam in the sunlight. “I found it!” He shouted, holding the object against his head. What! How did it get there? A heavy, roaring sound filled my ears, drowning out the sudden, horrified screams of the maids around me. The sky seemed to tilt on its axis. My stomach dropped into a bottomless, icy abyss as I stared at the unmistakable shape of Ryker's golden lineage ring. “No—“ I stammered unable to form words I froze, refusing to believe my eyes. This has to be a mistake. Someone had set me up. The guards walk out and the ring on the head maids hands. Her eyes darted towards me and she smirked. “Got you!”
