Chapter 3

Arriving home, Helena immediately got out of her car. Plastic bags on hand with some groceries and clothes. She decided to get some groceries on her way as she suddenly remembered that she was running out of food supplies. Helena bought about four pairs of men's clothes for him, expecting him to stay for a few more days until he fully recovers. Going in, she immediately went to her kitchen to drop off the groceries and went to the room where Phoenix is. To her surprise, she saw Phoenix sitting exactly where she left him; in the same position he was two hours ago. And like a light switch, his face automatically brightened at the sight of her. “Here, use whatever you want. I got them in two sizes just in case,” Helena said, and handed him the plastic bag which Phoenix immediately took. “Thank you, mi am- I mean, Helena,” Phoenix corrected himself right away the moment he noticed one of her brows arching up, he awkwardly smiled at her and looked away. Rolling her eyes, Helena shook her head at him. “You could use the shower in my room as the bathroom here has drainage problems as of now,” “Oh, okay. Once again, thank you.” Phoenix said sincerely, as his eyes once again connected with hers. Those d*mn bright blue eyes! That’s always enticing and tingling her senses. She really has to stay away from this man, ASAP! And as if on cue, her phone rang which she had left in the kitchen. She could seriously kiss the person who’s calling her right now. Her savior for waking her up out of those little trances, she keeps falling in whenever their eyes meet. Clearing her throat, Helena awkwardly took a step back towards the door, creating as much distance between them. “Y-you’re welcome. Call me if you need something, I’ll just be in the kitchen.” She said as she turned her back on him, walking away from him as if she was on a walkathon and totally missing the panty dropping smile that made its way to Phoenix’s handsome face as he stared at his cute little mate’s retreating back. Grabbing her phone, she immediately answered it, which turned out to be a video call from her two friends. “Oh, thank heavens! Our precious baby girl is alive and well!” Lucy dramatically said the moment Helena joined the call. Rolling her eyes, she can’t help but laugh, placing her phone down where the two can see her as she moves around her kitchen. Taking the grocery bags from the table and unloading them, putting them away one by one. “And here I thought, I was the dramatic one,” Ash shook her head at Lucy’s antics. “You’re still the queen of exaggeration, babe. Don’t worry about me stealing your crown.” “Whatever. Anyways… would you like to tell us now why you disappeared from us the other night?” Ash asked with one eyebrow raised at her. “Oh, about that, I-”, Helena cut herself off, as she struggled to tell them what happened. How does she even tell them that she ditched her two girlfriends to have s*x with a complete stranger! Ugh. It sounds so awful in her brain. “We’re waiting,” Lucy said as she pretended to look at her newly polished nails. “Promise the two of you won’t get mad?” Helena asked, flinching at her own words. The two women immediately narrowed their eyes at her words. “Spill, Helena. What happened that night?” Ash urged her. Sighing, Helena closed her eyes and took a deep breath, counting from one to three. “Here goes nothing.” She was about to open her eyes when she suddenly heard Ash and Lucy squeal, which made her snap her eyes open. Her two girlfriends are both gawking at something behind her, or rather someone. Panicking, Helena immediately ended the call with the two women and turned around to see Phoenix standing at the entrance of her kitchen, freshly showered. Wearing a black shirt that emphasizes his muscular body, denim pants and barefooted. Like a Greek god gracing her house with his glory. With him, just standing there makes her heart pound in a good way. Unconsciously leaning on her counter, she openly stared at him with her mouth slightly opened. And as if that wasn’t enough. Phoenix slowly walked towards her, stopping just a few inches away from her. Leaning forward, he held her chin gently and softly he closed her gapping mouth. “Close that beautiful mouth of yours or I’ll be tempted to kiss you” Her cheeks immediately reddened at what he said. Looking away, she hastily moved away from him, scolding herself in the process. Opening the fridge, Helena leaned forward to hide her face and also, in an attempt to make her face feel less hot from what Phoenix had just said. “W-what do y-you want to e-eat?” Helena asked, stuttering, which made her blush more with embarrassment. “I’m okay, I’m not hung-” Phoenix said in an attempt to not intrude on his mate more, but his stomach had other plans. Hearing the sound of his complaining stomach, Helena couldn’t stop herself but laughed, totally forgetting her embarrassment. He was clearly starving. She pulled out some chicken and vegetables to make lunch for the two of them. As she moves around the kitchen, she tries her best to ignore Phoenix who’s now sitting at the dining table, following her movements. Clearing her throat as she stirs the pot, she suddenly has the urge to explain herself and what happened to them that night. She wants him to know that she’s not an easy woman, if he thinks otherwise. “A-about that night… I just want you to know that I usually don’t do those kinds of things,” “I know, and even if you do. I’ll still respect you.” She felt her heart pound at what he said. Some men, these days, think of women as toys and it’s a really sad reality for a lot of girls. She’s glad that Phoenix is not one of them. “Thank you.” Turning off the stove, Helena took a bowl and placed the dish in it. Hearing the screeching of the chair, she looked at Phoenix who was now walking towards her. “Let me help you with that,” he said as he took the bowl out of her hands, placing it at the center of the table. Helena, on the other hand, took plates and utensils for both of them to use. After setting up the table, the two of them sat across each other. None of them spoke as they both ate, an awkward silence between them. “So, is your back still bleeding?” Helena asked, as an attempt to ease up the tension between them. “Not anymore. The bandage you wrapped around it helped a lot. Thank you.” “You don’t have to constantly thank me”, she said, trying to wave it off. “Okay then. So, do you live alone?” Phoenix asked as he slowly sliced the chicken on his plate, trying to keep the conversation going. His graceful manner of eating did not go left unnoticed by Helena, biting her lips softly as her eyes unconsciously zoned in on his beautiful hands. There was something in the way that he held the fork and the knife that made Helena think about the passionate night they shared which made her cheeks heat up. Grabbing her glass of water, she immediately gulps it down. “Did I ask a too personal question? I apologize if that’s the case.” Shaking her head while holding the glass to her mouth as an attempt to disagree with him, she accidentally spilled some water on her front. “Sh*t!” Feeling the coldness of the water sipping through her clothes, she immediately stood up and walked towards the sink and took some paper towels, patting her clothes dry. “What is wrong with me?!” Helena irritatedly thought. She’s becoming so clumsy and tense in front of him. She’s usually not like this, there’s just something about him that makes her all flushed and panicky and… hot. This needs to stop. She doesn’t want what he’s making her feel. Her attraction to him is so strong that she can’t understand why. She had never felt this way before towards anyone, just him. It’s scary. Helena was so lost in thought that she did not notice him going near her. Phoenix gently gripped her hand to stop her from rubbing the paper towel hard on her shirt, which she was unconsciously doing. The touch of his hand on her skin made her snap back to reality. The little sparks of electricity that she feels whenever they touch is back, sending butterflies into her stomach. Looking up, her eyes connected with his. The tension is back, but it feels more intense now compared to what she was feeling earlier. She felt like she could get lost in his eyes forever, but she couldn't let that happen. She can’t be attached to anyone. Slowly she pulled her hand away as she lowered her eyes. Clearing her throat, she forced a smile and walked past him to sit and continue eating. Phoenix, although confused at her actions, walked back to his seat and continued eating, glancing at her from time to time. The moment they were both done. Phoenix volunteered to clean the dishes, which she rejected immediately. “Do me a favor and get some rest, mister” “But I want to help you clean up. It’s the least that I could do.” “A patient can’t do housework, so, shoo and go back to bed.” “At least let me stay here and entertain you while you clean up.” Helena couldn’t help but laugh at what he said. “And how will you do that?” “I’ll play twenty questions with you,” Phoenix said as he leaned his right hip against the kitchen counter. “I’m sorry, sir. I’m not interested in knowing you,” Helena teased. “I swear with my life, ma’am, that I am a very interesting person.” “Bet you are,” Helena said as she continued to wash the plates. “What do you mean? I really am” Phoenix exasperatedly said, which made Helena laugh. “Alright. Let’s do this” And so the twenty-question game started between them and before they knew it. The two of them are now standing in front of Helena’s room as they both giggle at the movie they ended up watching a while ago as they ate take out for dinner. The twenty question game turned to childhood stories that made them watch the movie called Shrek. Helena felt like she had found a friend in Phoenix, but at the same time, she felt strange to just have this instant connection with him. She was just so comfortable around him even though they had just met. Well, they already had s*x but that was a different story. And about him being after her, Helena thought that if he really was and his intentions were bad, he could’ve already hurt her hours ago but he didn’t. Instead, he was gentle and respectful towards her. “I can’t believe you’ve never seen that!” “Well, I never really had time to sit around and watch movies when I was a child. I was always busy with my lectures and training,” “Oh. So you were a studious child, huh?” “I guess,” Phoenix answered with a smile. At which, Helena answered back with that beautiful smile of hers that made Phoenix clench his fist so as to control himself and not to touch her. His mate is just so beautiful. If it was up to him, she'd be in his arms the whole day, everyday, ever since the day he found her in that alleyway. But he has to wait until he can finally tell her what she is to him and who he really is. “Then I’ll see you in the morning?” Helena said. “I’ll be next door,” Phoenix joked, which made the two of them laugh again. “Goodnight, Helena.” “Goodnight, Phoenix.”
