Chapter Five; Shadows Of The Heart

Allison gasped. “You followed us?” Kai smiled. “We’re your friends.” Rowan removed the necklace around his neck. Golden wings unfolded behind him. “I suppose it’s time you knew.” “I’m not human either.” Kai was a Phoenix Guardian. Rowan was the Keeper of Ancient Magic. For years… They had secretly protected the gateway between Earth and Astralis. Only Allison… The legendary Heartbearer… Could destroy Nyxara forever. “But I’m just a student.” “No,” Rowan said. “You carry the Light of Creation.” A crystal appeared in Allison’s hands. It glowed brighter than the sun. Nyxara captured Damien. “Choose,” she whispered. “Save your prince…” “Or save the kingdom.” Allison’s tears fell. She remembered every heartbreak. Every betrayal. Every promise she had made never to love again. Love wasn’t weakness. Love was courage. She raised the crystal. “I choose both.” The crystal exploded into brilliant light. The curse shattered. Nyxara screamed before dissolving into silver dust. Darkness vanished from Astralis forever. ⸻ Months later… Life at Crestwood College returned to normal. Mostly. Students still wondered why Allison, Damien, Kai, and Rowan were inseparable. Only they remembered the hidden kingdom. One evening Damien found Allison reading beneath the old oak tree. “You know…” “You still owe me coffee.” She laughed. “After everything we’ve survived?” “Especially after everything.” He knelt before her. Pulled a small silver ring from his pocket. “It isn’t an engagement ring.” She looked confused. “It’s a promise.” “When you’re older, when we’ve both finished college, when we’re ready…” “I’ll ask again.” Allison smiled through happy tears. “I’ll be waiting.” Kai walked over carrying drinks. “I knew you’d make her cry.” “They’re happy tears,” Damien replied. Rowan closed his book. “For once, all of you are being unbearably sentimental.” They all laughed beneath the golden sunset. Years passed. Allison graduated with honors. Damien reclaimed his throne—not as a ruler feared for his power, but admired for his compassion. He united Astralis and the human world through peace rather than conquest. Kai became commander of the Phoenix Guardians, protecting both realms with unwavering loyalty. Rowan established the Grand Library of Astralis, preserving the history and magic that had nearly been lost forever. When Allison turned twenty-two, Damien returned to the same oak tree where he had first promised her a future. This time, he held a different ring. “Allison Brooks,” he said, his amber eyes shining with the same warmth that had once been hidden behind arrogance, “will you marry me?” She didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” Their wedding was celebrated in both worlds. Humans and magical beings danced together beneath skies lit by dragons, phoenixes, and thousands of enchanted lanterns. Music echoed through the forests of Astralis while stars seemed to shine brighter than ever before. As Allison walked through the celebration, people smiled just as they always had. She still brightened every room she entered—but now it wasn’t only because of her beauty. It was because she had chosen kindness after heartbreak, courage after fear, and love after loss. She had entered college believing her teenage years would be remembered for failed relationships and disappointment. Instead, they became the beginning of the greatest adventure of her life. And every year after, when people asked Queen Allison and King Damien how their extraordinary love story began, they would smile at one another before answering with the same words: “It started with a stepped-on notebook… and a cup of coffee.” The End
