Chapter 17

“Have you lost your mind? How could you agree to meet an alpha in the middle of the woods somewhere, when we are supposed to be training?” Seb asked, as we drove deeper into the woods. It was the same route that myself and Neffi were on the first time we were attacked and I could honestly say I was a bit nervous. When I walked into that office, I only wanted to intimidate the guy or maybe ask him to not show that video again because of the harm it did to Neffi; however, the moment I realized he was were, I couldn’t help myself, which was why, instead of driving to the cabin to train, I was on my way to meet a man who was probably responsible for what happened back in Dawson City, or was trying to kill me for reasons I still didn’t understand. So I could understand the fear and hostility in Seb’s voice. If I were in my right mind, I would have never agreed to meet an alpha regardless of what he had done, but I wasn’t and Seb’s constant nagging was getting on my nerves. “How many times must I answer this question? No, I wasn’t thinking. I was worried about Neffi and curious as to why a Were was teaching at our school. I also wanted to know if he was responsible for the attack on me and Neffi and the murder that happened back in Dawson City,” I said, blurting out the one thing I forgot I didn’t tell him. “Murder? What murder?” He asked, softening his voice and sounding a lot less hostile. I could now sense the fear on him, but the last thing I wanted to do was bring up what happened to Neffi’s parents, especially when it wasn’t my place. But considering that I had already let the cat out of the bag, I sighed, then said, “Back in Dawson City, Neffi’s parents were found murdered in bed. Neffi found them. The marks on their bodies are like those of a werewolf and she is now convinced that one of our kind is responsible.” Intense silence filled the car, and I could tell without looking at Seb that he was both terrified and angry—only he had no idea how to say it. A few minutes later, the G.P.S spoke, “In 1000 feet, turn right,” the moment she said that and I put my blinker on, Seb spoke. “Why didn’t you tell us that?” He said, in a voice that echoed the fear I felt when Neffi said she wanted to kill the one responsible. I shrugged, “Because I didn’t know how, and it’s not my place,” I said, as I turned right at the road that led deeper into what I could call the forgotten forest. “Not your place? Liam, you are dating a girl who knows we exist and wants to kill us,” he said sternly. “Not all of us, just the one responsible, and I figured,” I started to say, as the forest became what looked like a small town before Seb cut me off. “You figured that you would take care of the matter, and once it’s all done, you and your girlfriend could go back to normal? News flash, Liam, you are not normal. Your lives will never go back to the way they were. The only thing you can do now, is come clean,” Seb said, repeating what he had said before. “I know. Like I said, I will tell her when the time is right. Now, can we please drop this subject, I’m trying to drive,” I said, as I looked out the window and at the town around me. It was your typical run of the mill small town, with a barber shop, small beauty salon, a couple of restaurants, grocer stores and houses that were spaced meters apart from each other. There were people standing around the shops. Some were talking but I couldn't hear them. I could have used my new increased hearing to try and listen, but I wasn’t that interested; however, they did seem to be interested in me and the car. It was as if no one ever came inside their town that wasn’t from around there. “In 1000 feet your destination is straight ahead,” the G.P.S said, as I drove deeper into the village until it led me towards what I could only describe as a castle that looked similar to the one in England. There was this water fountain at the entrance, a six-car garage and what looked like a horse stable. “Whoa,” Seb said, the moment we pulled up into the long driveway of the castle-style mansion. “I think we’re at the wrong place,” I said, swallowing hard. There was no way the alpha lived there. It had to be a mistake. Is what I thought until the car was surrounded by wolves. They weren’t the same wolves that had approached the car before, but they were still growling and barking at the car, as if daring us to come out. If this had been five months ago and I or Neffi were in the car, my first thought would have been to get out of there as fast as possible; however, at that moment, despite the initial fear, I felt the need to get out the car and see if they would attack, so I did. The moment I exited the car, the wolves started to bag back. It was weird. I had expected them to charge at me, but the moment they saw me, they all lowered their heads. Then I heard a voice that sounded a lot like my own, call me. I slowly turned my head in that direction and there in front of me was me. Or at least what I would look like if I was black or tan. He was a few shades darker than my usual tan. He had the same brown eyes as me, with braids going to the back, and was a bit cockier than me. I would say it was like looking in the mirror; however, it felt more like a before and after shot with me being the before. Next thing I knew, the other me threw his arms around me. His smile was so bright that it took up his whole face, and I knew who he was. “I’m so happy you made it. I knew you were still alive,” he said, as he pushed back and looked at me. “Um?” I started to say, feeling completely overwhelmed and confused. “I’m Dominic, your twin. Come in, we can explain everything to you there,” he said, as he walked me towards the inside of the castle with Seb trailing behind us. I looked around the place completely baffled. The inside was like a modern-day museum, with paintings hung on every wall and a red carpet laid out at our feet. There was also an elevator and what looked like at least 10 floors. Why anyone would need that much room was beyond me. “We’re here,” he said, as we stopped in front of a large door, that only made my stomach do back flips and my palms sweat more than I thought possible. I was about to meet my parents and it scared me. Suddenly, the door opened to the largest office I’d ever seen. Prof. Young was standing next to a man who was sitting at this large marble desk. The man looked like an older version of me, only his eyes were an icy blue that I swore could see straight through me. His hair was blonde, his skin was the same complexion as mine, and he was just as bluff as my long-lost twin. I knew who he was the moment I saw him. He was my dad and, from what I could gather, the alpha of the pack. “Father,” Dominic started to say, only to be cut off by a single raise of our father’s hand. “Come closer Liam,” my father said, and before I could stop myself, my feet began moving in his direction. He then rose to his feet and the moment I was close he hugged me. Then broke our embrace and slapped my shoulder, “I’m so glad you're alive. That will be all Quincy, Sebastian, follow your father out, I need to speak to my son in private,” he said, taking me off guard. My eyes shot towards my roommate, who then bowed and followed who I now knew was his father, out of the office and closed the door behind him. My twin then took a seat in front of our father’s desk and smiled as if he had just won the lottery or something. “Let me take a look at you,” he said, circling me like the wolves had done. “You are a little smaller than I thought you’d be, but given the circumstances, I guess it makes since. Sit down,” he ordered, offering me a chair next to my twin. He then sat back behind his desk. “Um… I’m confused,” Was all I could say. “I understand, it’s a lot. I can tell you what we know. Seventeen years ago, there was an attack on our clan. A fire broke out, and you went missing. We searched everywhere. Your mother was beside herself, and, of course, your brother cried for days, while your sister went out searching for you with the rest of the pack. It wasn’t until five months ago when my men were chasing a rouge that found it’s way to Canada ,” he said. “Wait, your men were in Canada five months ago?” I asked, alarmed that maybe my father really was responsible for what happened to Neffi’s parents, and if that was the case, what would become of us. “I know where your mind is going. I can tell you honestly that none of my men had anything to do with your friend’s parents’ death. I sent Quincy, Sam and Sebastian to the school to keep an eye on you and also lead you here when the time was right. I didn’t think it would be this early but we have no choice,” he said, suddenly changing his tone to that of serious, and I swear the room temperature dropped. “What do you mean?” I asked, satisfied that it wasn’t him or anyone in that pack. “A few weeks ago, Dominic was attacked by one of our rival packs. It’s not common for anyone to move on my territory, and when they do, they are normally put down without a second thought, but that night they attacked your brother, who barely escaped with his life. He then said it was a car and a blinding light that saved him. Does that ring a bell? He asked, staring at me as if he already knew the answer. I then looked at my brother and said, “You’re the reason they attacked us?” “Yes, and I’m sorry, but now they know about you, which means that you are at risk,” Dominic said, in an apologetic tone. “Which is why, Dominic and a few of my guards will be attending school with you for now. You will move out of your dorm and come here so we can train you properly for this war that’s coming,” my father said. I stood up, then shook my head, “I can’t move here, I have to stay on campus. I have to protect Neffi, because if you are right, she’s in danger.” “Your human friend will be alright as long as you are not near her,” my father said; however, it didn’t sound like he was worried for her safety, it was more along the lines of him ordering me not to go near her again, an order I refused to accept. “No. I’m not staying away from her, I can’t,” I declared. “You can and you will. I know you were raised by humans, but you are not one of them. You and your friend are not possible,” he said. I snorted, “That’s not for you to decide.” Suddenly, he was on his feet, he had slammed his hands on the desk then said, “It is my decision. I am your father, you answer me,” he growled. Next thing I knew, I was on my feet, staring him down then I heard myself say, “I don’t care who you are. I don’t know you. The only family I have is in Dawson City, and Neffi is my girlfriend. I will not leave her because you told me to,” I said, moving my hands for emphasis. Surprisingly, he laughed and so did my twin, “I knew it. Though you are a little too young and untrained to challenge me, I do see you taking over after me,” he said, as he sat back down, then touched his fingertips together, while I just stood there confused. “Tell you what. You can stay at that school, but I’m still sending in extra men. As for your training, you will train at school and if we are lucky and the war starts after your break, I want you here for winter break, do you understand?” He said more as a statement than an answer. I shook my head, still confused. “Good, Dom, take him to meet your mother, I still have a lot of business to take care of,” he ordered. “Yes sir,” Dominic said, as he stood up. “Let’s go,” he said, and just like that I followed him out the room feeling just as lost as I had when I first entered.
