Chapter 4

1941 Words
Liam drove like a bat out of hell down the darkened road, not stopping until we reached the crowded police station. “Come on,” he ordered, the moment he stopped the car. Terrified, I followed him into the brightly lit station, our hands still interlaced as if our lives depended on it. “Please I need to talk to someone,” Liam said, to a middle-aged redheaded woman behind the receptionist's desk at the station, while dozens of other officers walked around and pretended to be busy. “What happened?” The lady asked, alarmed. “We were attacked at the diner off Greenwood Dr. My car was hit from the side and they tried to pull us out and kill us,” he explained, trying to sound less terrified than he was. “Slow down son, have you been drinking?” An officer asked, giving us the once over. “No sir, I can show you my car,” he said, respectfully. A few seconds later, we walked outside with the police and showed them my side of the car, which I hadn’t noticed was completely dented. “Now you say that you were hit while you were at a diner, right? Did you see the people that hit you?” The officer asked a lot more willing to help than earlier. “I didn’t see the car, but I did see the fifteen or so people standing in front of my car and on the side. The leader was bald with a tattoo that looked like a skull, and his eyes were black. I think they were black. It was too dark to tell. “You can stop right there son, we know who those people are. We’ve been trying to get a handle on them for years, but they keep moving. Are you students at the college?” the elderly officer asked. “Yes sir,” Liam answered for us. “Okay, well, the best thing you can do is go back to school, and I promise that the moment we find them, we will let you know,” the officer said. “Thank you, sir,” Liam said, while I kept my mouth shut. A few minutes later, we were back at the dorm. “You okay?” Liam asked the moment we walked into my dorm room. The lights were still on and Taylor wasn’t back yet, which was typical of her. I shook my head no, “What the f**k was that?” I asked, as I walked to my bed and sat down. I hadn’t been that terrified since the night my parents died. “I don’t know,” he said, as he sat across from me in my vanity chair. His eyes were dark and he looked just as lost and terrified as I was. “How could you not know, whoever or whatever those people were, are after you. Who the hell did you piss off?” I asked, accusingly. “No one. We didn't really talk in school, but you know that I’m not that type of person,” he said, searching my eyes for assurance and I believed him. “I know. It’s just, I don’t know what to think. One minute we’re kissing and the next,” I said, prompting him to stand and wrap me in those big arms of his again, allowing me to get a whiff of his intoxicating cologne. “I know, I don’t either,” he said, pushing back and gazing down into my eyes. He was a head taller than me, forcing me to look up at him, “I promise I will call my parents tomorrow and ask them about it, but I don’t want to to walk out that door with you thinking that I’m a bad person,” he said, inching his head closer to mine. “I don’t think you’re a bad person, I just don’t know what the hell happened. I’m scared Liam,” I started, then froze as another thought came to mind. The man beast that was standing in front of us could have killed my parents. His teeth were sharp and it looked like he had claws. “What?” Liam asked, again searching my eyes. “What if that thing that tried to kill us today, was the one that killed my parents,” I said, as the tears began to flow again. His eyes widened, “I was thinking the same thing. But why kill your parents then come after me? This doesn’t make any sense. Do you think we should go back to the station tomorrow?” he asked, as he sat next to me on the bed. He was so close, just as close as he had been in the car before all hell broke loose, and despite how terrified I was, a huge part of me wanted to finish what we started in the car, and it didn’t help that those beautiful brown eyes were looking back at me. Instantly I felt my cheeks warm, so I forced my gaze to my hands that were sitting perfectly in my lap, then shrugged and said, “We could, but I don’t know how big of a help they would be,” I said, reminding myself that I was scared. “If you want, we could go back to the diner and see if we can find some clues about who tried to kill me and if they were connected to your parents' death,” he said, nonchalantly. I shook my head no profusely then looked at him as if he’d lost his mind. “What?” he asked, apparently confused, “I thought you wanted to know what happened to your parents and I for sure want to know what tried to kill me with a pack of wolves,” he said, sternly and a lot more aggressive than I was used to. “I do want to know what happened, but,” I said. “But what?” He interrupted. “I’ve seen this movie and it never ends well for my people. We are usually the first to go,” I said, as I recalled all the horror movies and books that I had seen over the years, and the black person always died in the end. Suddenly he laughed and, despite everything that had happened, I found myself laughing. It was the first time in a long time that I’d actually allowed myself to feel anything close to happiness and it was all thanks to Liam laughing at what I had not intended to be a joke. Then a huge smile spread across his face, making me feel flustered and embarrassed, “what?” “Nothing, I’m just happy to hear you laughing again,” he said, as he took my hand into his, giving me that much needed comfort that I secretly craved. Suddenly, our eyes met and I felt myself being pulled towards him. Despite everything that happened, I still wanted to finish what we started in that car before all hell broke loose, and I could tell he wanted to as well. “I wondered why you left so early,” Taylor’s voice rang from the direction of the door, causing both Liam and I to jump while instantly killing the mood. “I’ll catch you later, Neffi,” Liam said before suddenly bolting out the door, like his life depended on it, while I stared after him, trying to figure out what to say to my nosy roommate. “What was that?” Taylor asked. “No scratch that, what did I miss?” She said with this huge smile on her face that screamed, you are not going to sleep until you tell me everything." Her makeup was smeared and she reeked of alcohol, but she was still sober enough to drill me on what had just happened. I guess that was one of the perks of being a party girl. I shrugged then slowly made my way to my mirror, while she slammed the door shut before joining me. “That was nothing important,” I lied. Of course it was important, this was Liam. A guy I had been in love with for years who admitted that he liked me too. “Neffi,” Taylor said, with that know it all tone. I sighed, then turned around and looked at her, “Liam saw that I was upset so we left the party early,” I said. “I saw you two leave the party. That was three hours ago. So was he leaving after…” Taylor teased. I shook my head no, profusely, “He wanted to take me to this diner to clear my head, then we were attacked by a pack of wolves and what looked like werewolves,” I blurted out. I don’t know why I told her. I knew she wouldn’t believe me. Hell, I didn’t believe me and I was the one who witnessed it. Taylor’s jaw dropped as she stared at me as if I had lost my mind. Then, after the longest moment of my life, she threw her head back and laughed as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world. I can’t say I blamed her, considering how weird and frightening the entire situation was; however, a part of me needed her to believe me. “Werewolves? Really Neffi? Okay, have you been drinking or did you eat a bunch of edibles?” She said, as she made her way from beside me to her vanity, still laughing as she sat down. “I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true. Liam and I were sitting in his car outside a diner, when all of a sudden, the car was attacked by wolves and what looked like werewolves,” I said, panicked. Taylor shook her head as she began to remove the makeup off her face, a chore I had forgotten to do. “What were you and Liam doing in the car?” She asked, completely ignoring my outburst, while I went to work on removing the makeup off my face with my makeup remover. “We were talking then we may have started to make-out but those wolves,” I started, only to be interrupted by Taylor who was again in my face, only this time she was practically giddy. “Make out? Really? Is he a good kisser? Was he rough? Were clothing being removed? Give me the deeds?” She ordered. “Yes he’s an amazing kisser but…” I started to say, only to again be interrupted by a wide-eyed Taylor. “I’m so happy for you. So are you two like a thing now or was it a one-time thing?” She asked. Again I sighed, then climbed to my feet and walked to my dresser, “I don’t know what this means,” I said, as I rummaged though my clothes until finding a pair of shorts and a shirt to change into. Normally, I would have taken another shower before bed; however, I was too exhausted and confused to do so. Instead, I changed clothes, then climbed into bed. “Neffi?” Taylor said. “I’m going to sleep. I’m tired,” I said, as I laid down, then rolled over to my side facing the wall. “Okay, well, I’ll bug you tomorrow and you can fill me in then,” she giggled. I said nothing, only slowly closed my eyes and allowed myself to drift into dreamland.
