Chapter 8

“So where are we going?” I asked, as we drove away from the school and towards an unknown destination with the GPS as our guide. “I told you, lunch,” he said, as he glanced over at me with that gorgeous smile of his that made me smile and instantly forget everything that had happened between me and all the girls earlier. “That’s not an answer,” I teased back, with a smile I couldn’t help but show. “It’s my answer, just sit back and enjoy the ride. Besides, you’ll love this place I’m taking you,” He said as he casually interlaced our hands, making me smile even brighter than I thought possible. It’s funny how none of the guys I've ever dated made my heart flutter the way Liam did. Silently, I shook my head yes, then turned my gaze to the window. My first thought was to try to spark up a conversation; however, at the last moment, I decided against it because of how amazing the silence was. At that moment nothing mattered, not Liam’s possible relationship with Sam, that conversation I had with Taylor, the fact that Liam and I were attacked the other night, nor that I still didn’t know who killed my parents and why. It was as if all of my worries and fears faded away the moment he held my hand and smiled at me. “We’re here,” he said, as we pulled up to this restaurant a few miles away from the school. It was a nice and rather causal place, which was fine. I wasn’t expecting anything fancy, especially for a lunch date. “Thank you,” I said, with what felt like had become a permanent smile on my face as Liam opened my door then helped me out the car. He said nothing, only smiled, then escorted me into the restaurant. The place was kind of empty, which was perfect for me, because the last thing I wanted was for someone I knew or he knew, for that matter, to interrupt our date. “Right this way,” The host said, as he escorted Liam and I to our table. I smiled the whole time, feeling like a princess. “Here are your menus, your waiter will be here shortly to take your orders,” The host said before walking back to his station. “I can’t believe we are finally doing this,” Liam said, more to his menu than me, and taking the words right out of my mouth. “I still can’t believe you like me and didn’t say anything,” I said, feeling a bit bashful. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that. I told you I was too shy and there were other guys. Plus, I didn’t think you liked me, but I’m glad I was wrong and that we are finally having lunch together,” he said, sounding a bit bashful, which just made him look even more adorable in my eyes. “Yeah, but besides that. I do have a question for you. At first, I wasn’t going to ask, but then I changed my mind,” I said, still unsure if I wanted to ask him about his relationship with Sam. I mean I knew or at least I wanted to believe that I was right about her being nothing but a f**k buddy, but a part of me needed him to say it. “Okay, what is it?” He asked, nervously, as if he already knew what I was going to ask. “It’s about Sam,” I started to say. Just saying her name made me feel angry and irritated. The last thing I wanted to talk about on my first of what I hoped would be many dates with Liam was that b***h, but I couldn’t help it, especially after that showdown earlier. To both my surprise and delight, he chuckled, then said, “Oh, she and I are not together. I will admit that she was a fling but it was nothing serious.” He assured me. “Really? Because she said..” I started to say only for him to cut me off. “I don’t care what she says. I told you that you are the only one I care about and she means nothing to me. She was just helping me study, and one thing led to another, but I told her from the beginning that we weren’t going to be anything more than that,” he said, as if his life depended on it. “I believe you,” I assured him, feeling satisfied and relieved with his response. “You do?” he asked, breathing out a sigh of relief he probably didn’t even know he held. “Yeah, I could tell by the way she was acting the other day that you two had that kind of relationship, but when she told me that you two were together, I had to ask because I’m not that kind of girl that would get in between a relationship,” which was true. I normally wasn’t that kind of girl; however, it was something about Sam that made me want to be that person. Suddenly, he grabbed my hand, then looked into my eyes, and all I could see was longing and what looked like sincerity and love, “You don’t have to worry about her. I promise we are not in a relationship. We never were and never will be,” he assured me. Again I smiled, happy that he said that. We then dropped the topic and started enjoying ourselves. “That was so much fun,” I said, as Liam and I took a walk through the park. The sun was setting and the wind was growing cold; however, being in his arms made everything else seem unimportant. After lunch, he took me ice skating, which was one of my favorite pastimes. “I’m glad you enjoyed yourself,” he said, as he interlaced our fingers and we sat down on a bench. I then laid my head on his shoulder and looked up at the night sky. The stars were shining brightly above and the moon was crescent. It was the perfect ending to a perfect date that I didn’t want to end. “I did and it’s all thanks to you,” I said, meaning it. Again he chuckled, then shook his head. At that point, I rose up and looked him in the eye, “No really, thank you. You are the only person here who truly knows what’s going on with me. I haven’t been able to sleep or have fun since it happened. I’ve been numb but you helped bring me back to me, and I want to say thank you,” I said, meaning every word. And a second later his mouth was on mine. But unlike the last time we kissed, it didn’t feel needy or rough, it was passionate and sweet, and I could tell that he truly loved me. “You’re welcome,” he said, as we broke our kiss, “So you know this means you’re mine, right?” he asked with a devious smile. I bit my bottom lip then looked down, trying to hide the blush that had spread across my cheeks. “I guess,” I heard myself say. “I told you he was here. You’re not going to get away from us this time,” I heard a voice that sounded like the people from the night before say, instantly sending fear throughout my body. In an instant, I found myself standing up with Liam in front of me. We were surrounded by wolves and people. 2 of which looked as if they were in the process of changing into a wolf. “Who the hell are you people? And why are you after me?” Liam demanded in as steady a voice that he could muster given the circumstances. “He looks like him but I don’t think that’s him,” The smaller of the men said to who I assumed was the leader of the group, while the wolves growled and snipped at our legs. What happened the other night was scary, but at least we had a car. Now we were back in the same situation, only this time the car was parked all the way on the side of the park and we were completely surrounded on all sides by creatures that may have mistaken my boyfriend for someone else. The leader of the group punched the man, then took one long look at Liam, then yelled, “kill him.” All of a sudden, the wolves and the people lunged at us. Despite my fear and horror, I still found myself fighting off the enormous creatures applying every skill that I'd learned, while secretly hoping that the light from the night before would appear again and save us. Next thing I knew, I felt this pain in the back of my head, and what felt like nails digging into my skin. The pain was so bad that I began to lose my footing. The last thing I heard before passing out was Liam screaming my name to the top of his lungs and a quiet voice that sounded so distant yet so familiar say, Don't worry, I will protect you.
