Chapter 19

“Are you girls OK?” Liam asked, staring at me through the rearview mirror. After running for our lives for what felt like forever, Liam and a guy who looked just like him led us to a car and we all piled inside. Liam and his twin sat in the front while Taylor and I got in the back. “Do we look OK?” Taylor asked with so much force I thought she was about to hit him. “Why are you here? And since when do you have a twin?” I asked, trying to catch my breath. My head was pounding from running so fast, but the drive was helping. “I told you Seb and I would be hanging out this weekend with a few other friends, then I ran into Dom here, who apparently is my long-lost twin brother,” Liam said. “You are the long-lost twin. I was never missing,” Dom said, from the passenger seat. He was much buffer than Liam, with a deep caramel tan that Liam only got in the summer. When I first met him, I had a feeling that Liam was mixed with something, despite looking completely white, I just had no idea how to ask, considering how everyone knew he was adopted at a very young age, so he wouldn’t know anything about his family. “Oh,” I said, because that was the only thing that came to my mind at that time. “Could someone explain to me why we were being chased by a wolf the size of a bear?” Taylor asked, steering the conversation back to what had just happened. We were seconds away from being eaten or murdered like a few of the other students that were in the woods with us, then Liam and his brother showed up at the right time, which was amazing but weird and too coincidental. “How should we know? We were walking through the woods because I heard about that party and Liam here wanted to spy on his girlfriend, who I’m assuming is you,” “I was not trying to spy on you. He said there was a party on the hill and we should go. I said my girlfriend’s roommate said something about a party on the hill. He said he wanted to meet you, then preceded to drag me to the car and we ended up here,” Liam said, correcting his brother who was chuckling. “I didn’t drag him, he was happy to come. But anyway, when we got here, we saw people running. Of course, I know that the moment you see someone run, you run, there is no asking. You do that later when you’re away. I’m sure you ladies understand that thought process,” He said, looking back at us through his mirror and both Taylor and I shook our heads in agreement. “However, he ran into the crowd looking for you,” he said, eyeballing me, “and the rest is history,” he said, finishing his story that sounded a bit made up; however, I was too happy that they saved us to care about how much of that story was true. “Thank you,” I said, meaning it. “What happened anyway? We heard a wolf howl,” Liam said, looking back at me, but it was Taylor who spoke. “I don’t really know. All I know is that I was dancing and having a good time. Then all of a sudden, people started to run and, of course, I ran hoping I’d catch up to Neffi and the other girls,” Suddenly she hopped up then said, “That b***h,” and I knew exactly who she was talking about. “What b***h?” Liam asked. “Sam. That b***h left us and she took Rebecca and LaToshia with her. She didn’t even wait for us to get to the car, she just drove away as if she didn’t even care.” Taylor said, ready to fight. Her eyes were like lasers searching for their target and her nostrils flared the same way mine had the moment Sam pulled off without allowing me to get in the car. “I’m sorry what?” Liam asked, getting riled up. He then exchanged glances with his brother, before saying, “she could have just been scared and left because she didn’t see you, that’s usually how things work,” as dry as possible. I knew he didn’t believe it. If anything, he was trying to hide his anger from his brother, probably only wanting him to see the nice side of him. I shook my head no, then said, “No, she saw me. I was standing at her car, about to open the door. She then looked at me and took off. The b***h did it on purpose,” with as much conviction as Taylor had. “Really?” Liam said, sounding just as upset as Taylor and I were. He then looked over at his brother, who I guess was trying to soothe him, then said, “Don’t worry about it, I’ll talk to her,” in what sounded like code for something. “No, who’s going to talk to her are my fists when I beat that b***h's ass for leaving us there. Neffi was closer to her car, and yet somehow this b***h beats her to it, followed closely behind by Rebecca and LaToshia, who I’m considering dropping from my friends’ circle completely,” was the last thing Taylor said before the car was attacked on both sides by wolves and what looked like your typical werewolf from the stories I had read about as a kid. The body was fully transformed and yet, it stood on two legs as if it were still human. The creatures were running alongside the car, pushing here and there as if it were a toy, while Taylor and I screamed and held each other. “Faster,” Liam ordered. “Don’t yell at me, I can’t drive with you in my ear,” Dom yelled, as he began to speed through the darkness towards what we hoped would be light. It was then that I allowed my eyes to look out the window. There were as many as five of them around us and it almost seemed as if they were having fun. As if chasing our car down a dark street with no clear path towards a town or people, was something they looked forward to. Then there were the teeth that were so sharp I swore they could bite into the car without a problem. “Hang on,” I heard Dom yell, as the car’s speed increased, but that didn’t stop the werewolf from jumping on the back of the car and ripping the glass off the back window. It then reached its hand inside, trying to grab at myself and Taylor. Instinctively, I moved away from the window towards the floor with Taylor beside me. Taylor screamed, while I grabbed everything I could and started throwing it at the creature hoping it would leave, while crying hysterically and thinking about my parents. “f**k, Dom, is there a gun in here?” Liam asked in a voice that mimicked the same fear in my own, while his brother attempted to shake the wolf off the car, but it wasn’t working. “I think so, check the glove compartment,” Dom ordered. His voice was a bit uneasy as well, but I could sense the sheer determination in it. “This is why you should have listened to me,” he said. “I don’t have time for this. Why isn’t there a gun in here?” Liam asked. As curious as I was to know what they were talking about, I was too preoccupied with what was happening in front of me to care. My attention then turned towards Taylor who was sitting close to me shaking and mumbling to herself, something incoherent. I wanted to tell her that everything was going to be OK, but I didn’t think it would. I had already escaped death four times, but it still hunted me like a bad dream that I couldn’t wake up from no matter how hard I tried. “Come on white light,” I mumbled to myself, hoping for a repeat of what happened in the woods and at the park with Liam. Suddenly, the car began to shake. “What the hell are you doing?” Liam yelled at his brother, while the wolf that was attempting to climb into the car through that back window began to lose its grip, and the other wolves began slowing down. “It’s not me,” Dom proclaimed, and the shaking increased until suddenly the car was moving so fast that the wolves vanished and the next thing we knew, we were back at campus, in the parkage next to my car. “How?” Dom asked. “I don’t know,” Liam said. I sat there in disbelief, staring at the window where the werewolf had been, while Taylor sat silently beside me. Then my door opened and Liam helped me out. “You okay?” He asked, as he placed his hands on my face, then began searching my eyes. Was I ok? No, I was far from it. I had just come face to face with the creature that may have killed my parents and I was completely useless.
