“Here’s your dinner,” Ranulf grunted, pulling open the cage with the hand he had remaining. He shoved a barely passable gruel into Lyra’s mobile prison, sneering as she looked up at him. The young woman pressed her back against the bars, trying to make herself small and move as far away from Ranulf as possible. After Merrow took his hand, Ranulf had never forgiven her. Not long after she’d been captured, Merrow caught Ranulf crawling into Lyra’s cage to make good on his promise to be her first, and Merrow didn’t take kindly to his orders being disobeyed.
