Chapter Four: Flames of Betrayal
The city of Veridale was no longer the peaceful kingdom it had once been. Smoke and ash lingered in the alleys, carried on the bitter wind like a reminder of the previous night’s terror.
Flames still licked the rooftops where Elena had struck, and whispers of fear turned to panic in the hearts of the citizens.
Darius moved through the streets, his expression taut with unease. He had followed Elena for years, loyal to her cause, believing in her brilliance and her vision.
But seeing the destruction she had wrought—the lives lost, the terrified faces of the innocent—stirred something in him that he could no longer ignore.
“She is not saving anyone,” he muttered to himself, tightening his grip on the hilt of his sword. “She is consuming them… consuming me.”
Word had reached him that a noble family, the Ardens, had been trapped in their manor during Elena’s attack. Their home burned while soldiers scrambled too late to help. Darius’ stomach twisted.
He had been ordered to allow the city to feel fear—but this was different. This was unnecessary cruelty.
Meanwhile, in the palace, Prince Caelan convened a council of his most trusted advisors. Maps littered the table, marked with the locations of Elena’s known attacks. Liora hovered nearby, her crystal glowing softly, casting dancing shadows over the room.
“Her attacks are no longer random,” Liora warned. “She is testing loyalty. She is probing weaknesses, sowing distrust.
Someone within the city will betray the crown—if they haven’t already.”
Caelan’s jaw tightened. “And if that someone is Darius?” he asked quietly, almost to himself.
Across the city, Darius stood atop a crumbling rooftop, staring at the burning horizon. His mind raced. Memories of loyalty and friendship battled against the horror of Elena’s actions. A choice weighed upon him heavier than any sword: continue to follow her and remain her ally, or betray her to save the innocent… and risk her wrath.
