“Fall back!” the other girl shouted. “There’s nothing we can do against two of them!” She turned her head for one last glance. The howl that escaped the first monster’s misshapen lips would haunt her dreams for many nights that were to follow. “Fall back!” Phoenix cried again, insistently yanking her backwards. The last thing she saw of them was the ashen white giant as it wordlessly pitched forwards and threw itself against the tower of the invader. * * * * What is this place, they thought; it’s warm, it smells like autumn, tastes like blood in the mouth, like licking a cut. It was familiar, they realised, like being inside somewhere, somewhere vast, somewhere dark, somewhere long ago.
