A Subtle Pursuit

523 Words
The days after the surgery blurred into one another, the hum of the hospital a constant backdrop to Maya’s chaotic life. Her schedule was relentless, the hours never long enough to finish everything. But today, something felt different. She was walking down the hospital corridor, her stethoscope hanging around her neck like a badge of honor, when she saw him again—Aarav Malhotra. He stood at the nurses' station, reviewing some papers, his sharp suit and intense demeanor impossible to miss. Maya’s first instinct was to walk past without acknowledging him. She had a job to do, and she didn’t have time for distractions. But then, as if sensing her presence, Aarav turned. His eyes met hers, calm yet steady, and for a moment, time seemed to pause. He smiled slightly, a quiet, knowing smile that didn’t reach his eyes but still made something inside Maya stir. “Dr. Kapoor,” he greeted her with that deep, smooth voice. “How’s the patient from yesterday?” She didn’t expect the question. “Stable. Thanks for asking,” she replied, her tone polite but detached. Aarav took a step closer, his gaze never leaving hers. “I’m glad to hear that. I was hoping you might have time for a quick break. Coffee?” Maya frowned, immediately on the defensive. Was he trying to make small talk? Was he really going to sit there and pretend they could be friends, when all he’d done was show up uninvited in her OR the other day? No. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing her rattled. “I don’t have time for coffee,” she said flatly, turning away to walk down the corridor. But then she heard his footsteps behind her. “Just a minute,” he insisted, his voice soft but persistent. “I’m not asking for much, just a quick drink. You’ve been working hard.” Maya felt a twinge of irritation but suppressed it. She had dealt with distractions before, but this was something new. Aarav’s presence was different, his calm persistence unsettling in a way she couldn’t quite place. She paused, turning slightly to face him. “I’m not interested in your charity.” Aarav didn’t flinch. Instead, his eyes darkened slightly, but there was a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “It’s not charity, Dr. Kapoor. I just think you need a break. You deserve one.” Maya narrowed her eyes. “I don’t need a break. I’m fine.” Aarav, ever unruffled, stepped aside to let her pass. “I’ll leave you to your work, then. But don’t forget—you’re only human. Even doctors need a moment to breathe.” For a moment, Maya stood still, staring at him. His words weren’t forceful or condescending, but there was something in them that made her pause. She didn’t know what it was, but the way he spoke to her—like he actually cared, like he understood—felt different than anyone else had ever treated her. Maya shook her head and turned away. She wasn’t ready for this. She wasn’t ready for him.
