Chapter Six LILLIAN The trip back down the scaffolding wasn’t quite as simple as going up. In fact, it was a damn sight more difficult, even for Lillian’s nimble wolf. The scaffolds were made of bamboo, no culm wider than three inches, and their smooth, rounded surfaces made for stubborn, slippery purchase for her claws and pads. Though they were incredibly strong, and could support her weight easily, she had to watch out for splinters, which could easily slip between the pads of her paws, and make her howl out in agony. So Lillian took it slow, hopping down one beam, and surveying the next, picking out the lines and reflected streetlights of the glossy bamboo in the night.
