The message on Bethany’s phone burned in her mind long after Kai left the balcony. “He’s lying to you. Victor isn’t the only one who benefited from your father’s death. Ask Kai about the money he received two weeks before the funeral.”
She stood alone in the cool night air, the London lights blurring through the tears she refused to let fall. The city below continued its rhythm, taxis honking, people laughing on the streets, boats moving on the Thames, completely unaware of the war raging inside her.
Her body still tingled from Kai’s delivered touch, from the way he had held her like she was the only real thing in his world. Now that memory felt poisoned.
Cassandra found her on the balcony an hour later. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost. What happened?”
Bethany showed her the message. Cassandra read it twice, her face hardening. “We can’t trust anyone. Not Victor. Not Damien. And now… not even Kai.”
The sisters stayed up most of the night going through every file they had. Theo joined by video call from New York, his eyes tired but determined. “I’m digging into Kai’s accounts right now. Give me a few hours.”
When morning came, the sunlight felt mocking. Bethany barely slept. She dressed in a simple black blouse and pants, her mind racing.
The London trip that started as a business visit had turned into a nightmare of betrayal and loss.
They met Kai at a quiet café near the Shard. The place smelled of fresh pastries and strong coffee. Kai looked concerned when he saw them. “You look exhausted. Did something happen?”
Bethany stared at him across the table. “Did you receive money two weeks before my father died?”
The question landed like a bomb. Kai’s face went pale. He didn’t deny it immediately. Instead, he looked down at his coffee. “It’s not what you think.”
Cassandra’s voice was cold. “Then explain.”
Kai took a deep breath. “Your father asked me to move funds. He said it was to protect the family from the Shadow Board. I didn’t know the full picture. I swear, Bethany. I would never hurt you.”
Bethany wanted to believe him.
The way he looked at her, the tenderness in his eyes, felt real. But the doubt was too loud. “I need time,” she said quietly. “Don’t contact me until I say so.”
Kai reached for her hand but stopped himself. The pain in his eyes was genuine. “I understand. But please be careful. The Shadow Board is watching every move.”
He left the café.
Bethany felt her chest tighten. The man who had made her feel safe and desired might be part of the betrayal.
That evening, back at the hotel, the sisters sat on the sofa. Cassandra poured them both wine. “You liked him, didn’t you?”
Bethany nodded, tears finally falling. “I thought he was different. I thought maybe… there could be something real in all this mess.”
Cassandra hugged her. “Real love doesn’t come with hidden money and secrets. You deserve better than that.”
Later that night, Bethany couldn’t sleep. She stood on the balcony again, the city lights twinkling below. Her phone buzzed. It was Damien.
“I heard you’re digging into the Shadow Board. Come back to New York. I can protect you. I’ve always been honest with you.”
The message felt both comforting and suspicious. Bethany didn’t reply.
The next day, they met Mr. Graves in a secure room at the London office. The old accountant looked nervous. “I found something. Your father left a final IllusionForge recording. It’s heavily encrypted, but I think I can open it.”
The recording played. Richard Buch looked exhausted but determined. “Bethany, if you’re seeing this, I failed you. The Shadow Board is led by someone close to us. Victor knows more than he’s saying.
Damien is dangerous. But Kai… Kai was supposed to protect you. I paid him to stay close. I’m sorry.”
The words hit Bethany like a knife. Kai had been paid to get close to her. The passion, the tenderness, was it all an act?
She left the room without a word. Cassandra followed. “Beth, wait.”
Bethany walked straight to the IllusionForge lab. Kai was there, waiting. He looked up when she entered, uncomfortable with anger.
“You knew,” she said, her voice breaking. “My father paid you to get close to me.”
Kai’s face crumpled. “At first, yes. But then it became real. Every touch, every moment, it was real for me.”
Bethany stepped closer. The pain and anger mixed with the desire she still felt. She grabbed his shirt and pulled him into a fierce kiss. It was desperate, angry, and full of need. Kai responded immediately, his hands sliding under her blouse, cupping her br**sts, thumbs teasing her ni**les until they hardened.
He lifted her onto the lab table. His mouth moved to her neck, biting gently, leaving marks. His fingers slipped between her thighs, finding her wet. He stroked her cl*t in firm circles, then slid two fingers inside her, curling them perfectly. Bethany moaned, her head falling back.
Kai removed her clothes with urgent hands. He knelt and licked her cl*t with long, hungry strokes, sucking gently until she came hard, her thighs shaking around his head.
He stood and entered her in one deep thrust. The rhythm was urgent, almost angry. Bethany wrapped her legs around him, meeting every thrust. “Tell me it was real,” she gasped.
“It was real,” Kai groaned, thrusting deeper, every slap and grind. “Every second.”
They came together, bodies trembling, clinging to each other as if the world might fall apart.
Afterward, they held each other in silence. Bethany whispered, “I don’t know if I can trust you anymore.”
Kai kissed her forehead. “Then let me prove it to you.”
The betrayal was deep, but the connection was still there. The line between love and lies had never been thinner.
