Freya POV
Please tell me he’s joking. I breathe in and out, again, without looking at him. They’re a trap, I remind myself. Last time I looked into them, I ended up pregnant. I shake my head at him as an eccentric Theo comes running into the bathroom.
“I’ll be out here if you need anything.” He whispers roughly before heading back downstairs to the living room. Breathe, Freya, just breathe.
I give Theo his bath, which definitely calmed him down quite a bit after he’s been playing all day. Sometimes I feel awful because I have to work all the time and I can’t match the energy of this kid. I wish he had more friends to play with, but I know that’s practically impossible with everything that’s going on with the other mothers here.
“Alright, Theo, baby. You’re all ready for bed.” I ruffle his wet hair with a soft towel as I finish dressing him in pajamas for bed. That’s when I hear a loud crash from downstairs. What the f**k? Worried, I look at Theo in the eye. “Sweetie, go hide in our secret spot. Mommy needs to see what’s going on downstairs, okay?”
Theo’s eyes go wide a bit but he nods quickly before scurrying off into his room. I get up from squatting and head back downstairs where I see Liam and Jerrod fighting. You have got to be kidding.
“Stop.” I bellow out into my living room. They both seize their fighting as they watch as I descend from the stairs. “Are you guys trying to scare Theo?”
“Is he okay?” Liam’ eyes go wild when he realizes Theo isn’t downstairs with me.
“He’s fine. What the hell is going on in here?” I harshly whisper at them because I don’t want to risk Theo hearing anything too traumatizing.
“What is this guy doing here, Frey?” Jerrod whispers loudly to me and points to Liam. “I came over to make sure you were okay, but this guy is in your f*****g living room!” I practically glare at Jerrod for cursing this loudly in my house with Theo here. He may be in the other room, but he’s still a kid and curious.
“Jerrod, Liam.” I quickly introduce them, despite them glaring at each other. “Jerrod, Theo is his, alright? He was just spending some time with him. We’re fine. You can go home.”
“No. No way! I’m not leaving you here with him!” Jerrod loudly says. f**k. “What the hell are you thinking, Frey? This guy abandoned you when you were pregnant! There’s no way in hell I am leaving you if he’s here.”
“Uncle Jerrod?” Theo’s sweet scared voice comes through from the top of the staircase. f*****g hell. I turn around as I watch Theo’s little legs carry him down the stairs as he runs straight to me. I pick him up as he holds on to me tightly. Liam comes closer to me, but Jerrod shoves him away.
“Don’t.” Jerrod warns Liam, but Theo buries his face into my chest. “Don’t go anywhere near them.”
“Out.” I say harshly. “Both of you. Now.” They both look at me like I’m crazy, but they’re scaring Theo with all this yelling.
“Freya.” Jerrod tries to start with me, but I shake my head at him.
“I need to put Theo to bed. You both need to leave now.” I try to soothe Theo from his nervousness. He’s usually pretty calm, but he doesn’t like it when people raise their voices. Damn it.
“But Freya!” Jerrod yells out to the point that Liam just drags him out of here. Even Liam saw how nervous Theo got. They both leave. Thank God. I head over to the door with Theo still in my arms. Locking the door, I hush to Theo to calm him down.
“Mommy, does Uncle Jerrod not like Uncle Liam?” His small voice forces me to stop for a second before I continue up the stairs to get to his bedroom.
“It’s complicated.” I tell him the truth as I set him into bed. Usually he’s pretty good about sticking to our hiding spot until I come out to get him, but I think he recognized Jerrod, which isn’t a good thing. “Now, what happened to hiding in our spot?” Theo gives me a small pout in sadness.
“I’m sorry, mommy. I was scared.” I let out a smile and give the kid a tight hug.
“It’s mommy’s job to protect you. Next time, when mommy tells you to hide, you have to hide, okay?” Theo nods quickly and with utter determination for the next time. “Good boy.”
“Mommy, do I have a daddy?” My heart literally sinks to the floor, burning it’s way to Earth’s core.
“Why do you ask, sweetie?” His lips give another small pout.
“Patrick and Harry said my daddy didn’t want me. They both have one, but I don’t.” I get stuck in my throat. I seriously thought I had more time before we had to have this conversation.
“Is that all they said?” Theo shakes his head as he gets even more sad and teary.
“Did Daddy not want me because I was sick?” My eyes widen at him.
