Chapter 8
The next day at the pawnshop passed as they all did, with people coming in to get a loan on something they might or might not come back for. Others were there to see what was for sale. Twice, Jesse huddled at the back of the shop with men who Dirk knew wanted to fence something, although the average person watching the transaction would have figured they were pawning them instead.
During his lunch break, Dirk used one of the laptops in the shop’s electronics section to go online. He searched several realty sites for homes for sale, finally settling for one that wasn’t too far from his apartment.
As soon as six o’clock rolled around Dirk left the shop and walked home. When he came around to the corner of the block, he saw Tripp and Fey sitting on the stoop with Maverick nowhere
