Chapter 2 - The Serpent’s Coil The air in the booth was thick with unspoken threats and simmering desire. Liam's eyes, dark and predatory, held hers captive. Cole, a silent sentinel, watched from the shadows, his presence a constant, unsettling hum beneath the surface of the conversation. The velvet curtains around them whispered secrets, the plush seating a stark contrast to the sharp edges of the power play unfolding. "Answers," Maddy repeated, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "About Jason." Liam's smile was a slow, deliberate curve, like a serpent coiling around its prey. "Answers have a price, teacher. What are you willing to pay?" His hand, warm and possessive, slid up her arm, sending a jolt of electricity through her. The touch was a caress, a threat, a promise. Maddy's breath hitched, her body betraying her with a traitorous surge of heat. She wanted to pull away, to regain control, but instead, she leaned in slightly, her curiosity outweighing her caution. "Information," she countered, her voice low and husky. "For information." "A fair trade," Liam murmured, his eyes darkening. "But what makes you think I have what you want?" "You're Jason's business partner," Maddy said, her gaze unwavering. "You know his secrets." "Secrets," Liam echoed, his voice a low, dangerous purr. "Everyone has them, Maddy. Some are just… darker than others." He leaned closer, his breath hot against her ear. "Tell me, what do you know of Jason's latest tech deal?" Maddy hesitated. She knew nothing of Jason's tech deals. She'd been a wife, a teacher, a woman living in a carefully constructed bubble. Now, that bubble had burst, leaving her exposed and vulnerable. She was a novice in a game of sharks. "Nothing," she admitted, her voice tight, but resolute. Liam's eyes narrowed, the blue of them turning almost glacial. "Don't play coy, Maddy. You're smarter than that." His hand slid lower, tracing the curve of her waist, the touch sending shivers down her spine. "Information is a currency here, Maddy. And you… you have something I want." He paused, letting the silence stretch, the tension thickening like a storm cloud. The music from the club pulsed around them, a dark, seductive rhythm that mirrored the frantic beat of Maddy's heart. The air itself seemed to crackle with unspoken desires. Cole's voice, low and gravelly, cut through the charged atmosphere. "Leave her alone, Liam." Liam's eyes flashed, a flicker of irritation. "Mind your own business, Cole." "She's not a pawn in your games," Cole retorted, his voice edged with steel, his eyes never leaving Maddy. He looked like he was ready to fight. The air thickened, their tension vibrating like a live wire. Maddy felt like a prize, a weapon, caught between two powerful forces, each vying for control. But she wasn't a pawn. Not anymore. "Perhaps," she said, her voice regaining its strength, a flicker of defiance in her eyes. "I'll play my own game." She turned to Cole, her gaze sharp, searching. "Tell me, Cole. What are you hiding?" His eyes darkened, a muscle twitching in his jaw. "Some things are better left buried." "Like your past?" she pressed, her voice barely a whisper, but she was finding her footing. He flinched, a flicker of something—pain? Guilt?—in his eyes. "Don't," he warned, his voice low and dangerous. "You don't want to know." "Why protect me?" Maddy asked, turning back to Liam, her eyes blazing with newfound determination. Liam smirked, his amusement laced with something darker. "Because you're curious, Maddy. Because you're drawn to the darkness. And because… you're mine." He leaned in, his lips brushing against hers. "And I always get what I want." The kiss was a claim, a challenge, a carefully calculated move. Liam’s lips moved against hers, slow, deliberate, testing. A heat unlike anything she’d ever known curled in her stomach, her pulse hammering in response. She wanted to resist, to push him away, to slap that smug smirk off his face. But instead, she let him take, let herself feel. The kiss deepened, becoming more urgent, more demanding. Liam's hand slid beneath her dress, his touch sending shivers down her spine, his fingers tracing the delicate lace of her undergarments. A gasp left her lips as her body arched involuntarily into his touch, the boundaries of danger and desire blurring into something unrecognizable. Cole’s presence was a silent force beside them, his gaze unreadable. He hadn't moved, hadn't spoken, but Maddy felt him. Felt his disapproval. His restraint. The air between them was thick with something unsaid, something she didn't quite understand. A moment stretched too long, the heat consuming her, and then Liam pulled away, his lips hovering just above hers, his breath warm against her skin. "Careful, Maddy," he murmured. "You're playing with fire." Maddy, still breathless, forced herself to meet his gaze. "Good thing I don’t mind getting burned." Cole exhaled sharply, his hands clenched into fists. "This isn’t a game you can control." She turned to him, her lips tingling, her heart pounding. "Then I’ll change the rules." Cole shook his head, but there was something almost like admiration in his gaze. "You have no idea what you're getting into." Maddy smirked, the taste of Liam still on her lips. "Maybe it's time I found out." Cole's gaze flickered, but he didn't respond. Liam, on the other hand, let out a low chuckle. "Oh, teacher," he murmured, his smirk widening. "This is going to be fun." Maddy knew she was playing a dangerous game, one where the stakes were high and the rules were twisted. But she also knew she wouldn't back down. She would play. And she would win—or go down trying. Tonight, she wasn't the innocent teacher. Tonight, she was a player.
