The soft morning light was slowly filtering through the thin white curtains into the cottage. The food on the plate on the small table had gone cold. Aria was poking at it with a spoon, but her mind was somewhere else. That phone call from last night, Max’s broken voice, and the dark shadow in Ethan’s eyes — everything was spinning inside her head.
Ethan was packing a black bag in the corner of the room. His movements were precise and practiced. Guns, extra magazines, an old map, and some bandages. He wasn’t saying anything, staying quiet as always. But Aria could feel the tension in every muscle of his body. Like the silence before a storm.
Aria couldn’t stay silent anymore. She asked softly,
“Are we really going to meet him?”
Ethan folded the map and replied,
“Yes.”
“But you yourself said you don’t trust him. He has put you in danger before.”
Ethan zipped the bag shut. His jaw tightened.
“I don’t trust him. But if he really has Rahul’s real identity, his base, and all the information… then this is the chance to end this game. We can’t wait any longer.”
Aria stood up. Her feet moved toward him on their own.
“You can’t do this alone, Ethan. I don’t want to sit and watch anymore while you take all the risks.”
Ethan turned fully toward her this time. His eyes were deep, tired, but something was burning inside them.
“You will stay here. That’s an order.”
“No.” Aria’s voice was firm now, no hesitation. “I won’t wait anymore. You’ve done so much for me. Now it’s my turn to stand by your side.”
A heavy silence fell between them. Only the sound of the hill wind outside. Ethan slowly stepped closer. So close that the warmth from his body and the familiar scent of his jacket surrounded Aria.
“This isn’t a movie, Aria.” His voice was low, almost a whisper. “Rahul doesn’t spare anyone. If he sees you once… everything ends. You’ll become my weakness.”
Aria looked straight into his eyes. Her heart was beating loudly.
“Then let me become your weakness. But don’t go alone. Take me with you.”
Ethan’s jaw clenched harder. He wanted to say no, wanted to hide her safely in this cottage. But seeing the determination in Aria’s eyes, the wall inside him was slowly cracking. That feeling from last night in the dark was coming back.
After a long pause, he sighed and said,
“Fine. But one condition — you stay in the car. No heroics. No risks. Promise me.”
Aria nodded, but inside her chest there was a mix of fear and a strange excitement.
“Promise.”
An hour later, they left the cottage. The car wound through the narrow hilly road. Thick fog, trees, and silence all around. Ethan drove with one hand on the steering wheel, the other near the gun at his waist. His eyes stayed fixed on the road, but his mind was elsewhere.
Aria watched him quietly from the passenger seat. The line of his jaw, the tight grip of his fingers on the wheel, the small tired lines at the corners of his eyes. She was thinking — how many times this man had risked his life for her. Why? Just because of her father’s debt? Or was there more?
“Ethan…” Aria said softly.
“Hmm?”
“Last night… when you said answering would make everything complicated… was it really only because of my father?”
Ethan stayed silent for a long time. The car took a sharp turn. Then he spoke in a very calm voice,
“At first maybe it was. But now… it’s not just that anymore. You’ve brought something into my life that I had forgotten for a very long time.”
Aria’s cheeks turned red. She looked out the window and bit her lip.
“Then what am I to you? A danger? Or… something more?”
Ethan glanced at her for a moment. His eyes held so much — attraction, fear, desire, and a deep care.
“You are my biggest weakness… and my most beautiful danger.”
After saying that, both became silent. But the air inside the car had become heavy with unspoken feelings.
Finally, they reached the meeting point — an old, abandoned warehouse. Rusty iron gates, broken windows, and dense trees all around. Ethan parked the car far away, hidden behind the trees.
“Stay here,” he said in a serious tone. “If you hear any sound or suspect anything, take the car and drive straight away. Don’t wait for me.”
“Ethan, please be careful…” Aria reached for his hand.
Ethan suddenly leaned in and placed his hand on her cheek. Warm, rough hand. He looked into her eyes for a few seconds.
“Promise me, Aria.”
“Promise.”
Ethan got out. Aria watched through the window as he walked straight toward the warehouse — back straight, steps confident, as if no shadow could touch him.
A few minutes passed. An unnatural silence all around.
Suddenly — a gunshot. Then another. Shouts. Sounds of struggle.
Aria’s heart stopped. Her hands were shaking. She broke her promise. She opened the car door, got out, and ran toward the warehouse.
Inside, she saw Ethan pinning Max against the wall. Blood was flowing from Max’s arm. His face was pale.
“You set me up!” Ethan roared.
“Believe me, I didn’t!” Max gasped. “Rahul found out about the safehouse. He wants to finish both of you. I have proof… his real name, the list of his men… everything!”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. He still didn’t fully believe him.
Right then Aria burst in and shouted,
“Ethan!”
Both men turned.
At that exact moment, a man stepped out from the dark shadows of the warehouse. Gun raised. One of Rahul’s men.
Time seemed to slow down.
Ethan moved like lightning and pushed Aria behind him. A shot rang out.
Pain exploded in Ethan’s left shoulder. Blood quickly soaked his shirt.
“Aria… run… now!” he said through gritted teeth, his face twisted in pain.
But Aria didn’t run. She quickly pulled the gun from Ethan’s waist. Her hands were shaking, eyes full of fear, but also determination.
“I won’t leave you!” she shouted.
Max was also trying to get up from the ground. Another shot came. This one passed very close to Aria.
Ethan pressed his wounded shoulder and stood in front of Aria. His eyes now held only rage and the vow to protect her.
More shadows moved inside the warehouse. More men were coming.
Everything was now heading toward a big explosion…
