Chapter 31
RYAN’S LETTERS WERE coming more frequently, with Leonard receiving one just about every week, and quite a pattern emerging. In one letter, Ryan would outline his frustrations with some addict he had come across and how he wanted to imagine something bad happening to them and asking for Leonard’s help. And then in the next letter, Ryan would be calmer and would ask about Leonard and what was going on in his life and how things were going with him.
True to form, Ryan’s latest letter followed the pattern. He went on about how he was just minding his own business when a gambling addict had insulted him, how she was a bitter and twisted old b***h who had wasted her life and blown her entire savings on slot machines because of her gambling addiction. Ryan wrote about being extremely frustrated and needing Leonard’s help to imagine a plan that would teach her a lesson.
After reading through Ryan’s background information on the old woman, Leonard got to work on the plan. He found his imagination was running more freely with each new mental challenge that Ryan set for him. Leonard did some research and found a service centre that did maintenance on the old-fashioned slot machines with a big pull handle. He then prepared instructions to rewire the internal motor drive to a repeating cycle and to set it at double the frequency to drive the handle harder and faster.
When his notes were complete, Leonard wrote his letter back to Ryan, added the sketches and sealed them in an envelope ready for sending the next morning.
