Chapter 21
‘STOP HARASSING ME, Winter!’ said Delaney, who was getting more and more frustrated with each of my visits.
‘Whoa, take it easy, Delaney. Don’t have a cow, man. Did you get out of the wrong side of the bed again this morning?’ I asked. ‘I’m only checking in to see what’s happening with the case.’
‘Like I told you last time, and the time before that, the case is a dead end. Nothing’s happening. I’m sorry to have to say it again, but your girlfriend was a junkie! And it’s just another junkie killing. Probably an argument with her dealer. After all, mainlining h****n is not exactly the safest leisure activity you can engage in, so it’s no surprise it ended badly,’ he replied.
‘I’m just frustrated at the lack of progress, that’s all. And I want to make sure you don’t give up on her,’ I said. ‘She was important to me. I didn’t look after her in life, so now I want to care for her in death.’
‘Look,’ said Delaney in a softer tone, ‘I understand this is tough. But my hands are tied. I’ve got other priorities that I need to look after. Like some psycho smoking a poor guy to death by rigging him up to a barbecue. So, I don’t have time to be chasing down dead ends on a cold case. If something comes up, I’ll call you, I promise. But until then, please leave me alone and let me do my job!’
‘Fine, fine, okay,’ I said. ‘I’ll ease off on the social calls. Bye, Frank.’
It looked like solving Sally’s murder would be up to me.
