Episode Two: The Stranger Who Wasn't a Stranger
The following morning, Amara went to see Elias, her grandmother’s elderly neighbor.
He had known her family for decades.
The moment Amara placed the photograph before him, his expression changed.
“You finally found it,” he murmured.
Amara frowned.
“Found what?”
“The truth your grandmother carried for most of her life.”
Elias carefully picked up the photograph.
“The young man was Daniel,” he explained. “He was your grandmother’s first love. They were supposed to get married.”
“What happened?”
“Daniel disappeared days before the wedding.”
Amara stared at him.
“Did he leave her?”
Elias shook his head.
“No. At least, not by choice.”
He opened an old drawer and removed a yellowed envelope.
“Your grandmother gave me this many years ago. She told me to keep it until someone came searching for answers.”
Inside were an old railway ticket and a newspaper clipping about a terrible train accident.
Daniel had been traveling that night.
Amara read the article, her hands becoming cold.
“Everyone thought he died,” she whispered.
“They did,” Elias replied.
“Then how could Grandma have received letters from him?”
Elias looked directly at her.
“Because Daniel survived.”
Amara's heart raced.
“Where is he now?”
“I don't know. But your grandmother knew where he was.”
“Then why did she never tell me?”
Elias sighed.
“Because Daniel asked her to keep a promise.”
“What promise?”
“To remain silent until the person who needed the truth was ready to find it.”
Amara looked at the photograph again.
For the first time, she wondered whether the secret had been waiting specifically for her.
